Through his stories and childhood reminiscences, my grandfather has always been a great link to my Nigerian roots. Roots that some, given my red hair and pale complexion, said were lies. Imagine being told, by strangers, that part of you didn't exist, because the truth was too wide to pass through their narrow minds. Imagine asking your own mother, at the the age of six, if you're adopted because of the seeds others have sown in your mind. Over the years, this ignorance has not broken, but galvanised my pride. After all, why would it break it. It's just pure pettiness. Besides it isn't important for its negativity, but for the positive way it has impacted my life. It has made me fall harder and deeper in love with my roots. There's something about adversity that does this. No matter how strong ignorance is, the truth is stronger - I am stronger. This strength has been passed down through my grandfather, to my mother and to me. It is the greatest gift one could ever ask for, and has served me so well in my life thus far, and will continue serving me. So thank you granddad ✨💜✨ #restinpeace #grandfather #nigeria #nigerianroots #mixedracefaces #mixedrace #familyheritage (at Holmfirth) https://www.instagram.com/p/CXZcfTLMl96/?utm_medium=tumblr
