there’s a book that like....kind of still sticks with me. night gate by isobelle carmody totally wrecked me when i was younger and im afraid to try and read it again because i know that bear will emotionally destroy me like every time

spoilers ahead for the first book in the series (i haven’t read any of the others WHOOPS)

so, basically, the main character, rage, ends up going through the night gate with her several dogs by accident. going through the gate Changes them. ellie becomes this very...cat-suit-y lady iirc, and the lil dog this lil not-quite-gnome, rage’s puppy billy becomes almost-but-not-quite-human, and bear....becomes a literal bear. 

bear, for context, is very very old for a dog. she is billy’s mom and she’s just so bitter and angry and gruff and tired and she just....really doesn’t like him much. she lived a really long hard life. later in the book, some people try to kill bear, and the group manages to eventually get back to the night gate to try to go home. as they pass through, bear dies. rage hears her speak, feels her speak, and bear is almost completely unrecognizable in how unburdened she sounds, having become the night gate. i can’t even finish this post without crying my eyes out lmao
