SYNOPSIS

Vi was supposed to be fighting on the other side of the war. But when her passenger ship was sabotaged and intentionally crashed into one of the main bases on Illyria, she didn’t have much of a choice. Her only chance for survival is to impersonate a soldier. She is given a mission: seduce the wealthiest woman on the planet, the countess Livia, in the hopes of procuring more funding for the war. 

If Vi wins Livia’s trust and procures the funding she could be the finger on the scale that tips the war from a stalemate to a massacre. But if she intentionally fails her mission she could be suspect of treason and her comrades will find out she’s an imposter. To make matters even more complicated vi has already fallen in love with her superior officer, the legendary war hero Arche Orsino. 

EXCERPT

I remember the noise most of all: it was the sound of breaking. With the same cutting resonance of bone splintering, metal buckling, and rock cracking; so much all at once. It turned into an oblivion: white noise, blank space, the everything from which nothing is born. It was like being overtaken by a tidal wave. I was consumed by the sound, the light, and the pain. 

As we made contact, I felt my ribs break. I was overwhelmed by that blaring void and pulled into the unconscious before I even got the chance to know the nuances of my body being crushed like a human in the hand of an angry titan.

She was pretentious, as most filthy rich people are, but she had a certain whimsical charm. I couldn’t detect any latent cruelty in her voice, maybe a faint twinge of sadness. But I could tell she was harmless, just looking for someone to pin her hopes on. He all wanted a hero or a lover. Both in one was a great deal, and the way she looked at me, even through the veil. I could only see the glisten of dark eyes, checking back on me every few seconds as we walked. It was as if she was afraid I would disappear if she looked away for too long. I could feel her desperation for something new and stable like an ache in my chest. She was so so lonely.

Pulling at the neckline of my gown I looked at my chest. It was splotched with yellow, blue, purple, and even some spots looked black. The core of the bruising was at my sternum, spreading out across my body with two large marks at my shoulders. A perfect X across my body. An x marks the spot of ‘If you hit me here I will certainly die’.

Arche entered the room shortly after I’d finished getting changed, and as I reclined on my bed he moved towards his own. But he lingered by the window; staring out over the dry amethyst terrain. For a moment, I thought he didn’t realize I was in the room. Something about the moment felt strangely intimate, as he looked out over his home planet with a sad, wistful gaze. I felt like I was watching a mother and son say a final goodbye. 

He sighed softly and glanced over at me, with a small bashful smile that said, ‘What can you do?’

There was a degree of humble submission in his posture, even as his arms were held behind his back like usual, his shoulders sunk low in a posture of resignation. 

“If we win the war will you come back here?” I asked. 

“No,” he replied, his gaze returning to the landscape, “At least, not at first. There’s other places...”

“I see,” I replied.

He looked eager to change the subject, “Tomorrow,” he began, “There’s a party.” 

“What kind of party?” I asked, getting to my feet to stand beside him. Generally parties were not my scene. I’d been enough of them to know that. 

“Livia’s hosting, she’s invited a lot of the top ranking officials from the war,” he said, which was both not an answer and exactly what I was looking to hear. It was a political event. “I’m going. And I’d like you to come with me.” 

“Why?” I asked. 

“Livia seems eager to see you again,” he replied, “I think that’s the only reason she invited me. I’m not part of her usual crowd but she knows that you are part of my squad. She mentioned that she would be fine with me bringing the whole team along.” 

“Is everyone else coming?” I asked. 

Arche gave me a look, one that told me I should know better than to ask questions like that, but he clarified anyway, “No, I think it would be best to streamline our efforts. Although I would love to give the team a night of revelry I have to assure that no one says anything out of line.” 

“You don’t want to babysit at a fancy party,” I clarified further. 

Arche’s eyes fell, almost as if he was ashamed and he looked out the window as a begrudgingly laugh turned into a sigh, “I’m sure you don’t want to either.” 

“No,” I cracked back, practically snorting, “No, those guys would probably herd like gazelles and assault the caterers. They’re great but I don’t know if they have what it takes for high society. They don’t have the same. . .”

“Sticks up their asses?” prompted Arche. 

A hyena-like bark escaped my lips in surprise at his crassness. He was right though. 

“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” I said. 

“So tomorrow then,” he said. His strong features were rimmed with the golden light of the perpetual sunset. His warm brown eyes glowed amber in the dying rays of day. It was hard to look away from him, but just as hard to look directly into his eyes. He seemed to read me, and to pull me in without saying much of anything.

My first thought was: Find Astian. It was an instinct I hadn’t managed to shake over the past two years. Even after he failed me when I was in need I still depended on him. I couldn’t separate myself from him. That was the side effect of being a twin. It was like we were still tied somehow. We didn’t have twin telepathy or anything hokey like that. But things just seemed to work out better when he was at my side.

Staring at me from the other side of the door was a young woman. She had dark black hair, thin lips, and hooded eyes. I would have found her pretty if she didn’t look like she was about to stab me. And she was armed for it too, with a long electrified bowstaff in one hand and the handle to the door in the other.
