The confusion behind Omar Mateen's sexuality
After the Pulse Nightclub Massacre on June 12th, 2016, many people would start to wonder the same question;
After the attack, many news outlets would start collecting evidence on whether or not Omar Mateen was actually gay or not.
Evidence 1 - Omar Mateen's Gay Lover "Miguel"
On June 21st, 2016, an anonymous male, nicknamed "Miguel" would be interviewed by CBS News. He would share that he would be in a sexual relationship with Mateen for 2 months, but this account was never confirmed or denied by CBS News or Investigators.
Evidence 2 - Frequent Pulse Nightclub visits
In the days following the Pulse Nightclub Massacre, Pulse Nightclub Patrons would state that they would see Omar Mateen Frequently visit the Nightclub, going as long as three years before the attack. Patrons would recall Omar Mateen sitting and drinking alone in a corner. Chris Callen's statement claims that Omar Mateen would drink with other customers at Pulse Nightclub. However, the FBI could not verify that Omar Mateen was secretly gay based off of the individuals claims.
Evidence 3 - Gay Dating Apps
After the attack, two people would come forwards with their statements.
Cord Cedeno - Cedeno was a regular patron at Pulse Nightclub. He told news outlets that he recognized Mateen while at Pulse Nightclub from Grindr and claimed that Mateen would message him on Grindr. Cprd Cedeno would also state that Omar Mateen would act very creepy in the messages, which prompted Cedeno to block him on Grindr.
Kevin West - Kevin West claimed that he would message Omar Mateen for a year while on the gay dating app "Jack'd". West would then see Mateen near Pulse Nightclub just an hour before the shooting, while dropping off one of his friends.
Although both men gave detailed accounts on their experience with Omar Mateen on Gay Dating Apps, no screenshots or any other sort of evidence was ever provided, which led to the conclusion that the statements cannot be used as evidence that Omar Mateen was gay.
A classmate of Omar Mateen's Police Academy in 2006 recalls Omar Mateen asking him out, but the classmate denied his advances. The classmate also believed that Omar Mateen was gay, but the evidence was not strong enough to get to a conclusion.
Omar Mateens Father, Seddique Mateen, denies the accusation of Omar being gay, with his response being: "It's not true. Why, if he is gay, would he do this? If it was true I would say yes, if it's not true I say it's not true."
The Conclusion to whether Omar Mateen was gay or not still remains a mystery. There is not enough concrete evidence that Omar Mateen was gay. The FBI could not find any gay dating apps, profiles, or any searches relating to gay dating apps on his phone and computer. As of today, it is still unknown whether Omar Mateen was gay or not.
