Local Hero “Nightbird” Opens Up About Sexuality and Past
by Steven Smith Published on May 24, 2017
NEW YORK -- In uncertain times with the nation divided by those who seek equality and those who deny it, New York City’s LGBTQ+ can now look to one more hero for inspiration. Better known to the public as the nocturnal avenger, Nightbird, opens up in this exclusive interview about his past and how he has become the hero we all know.
“When I was younger, I was put in danger. I was a victim of assault because I’m gay and when it happened to me, I made the choice then to stop hiding and running from these special gifts I’d been given.”
After a trip to the hospital because of an assault fueled by homophobia, Nightbird assumed the mantle to help those just like him. But he didn’t stop at just protecting LGBTQ+ youth from homophobic bullying.
“I wanted to protect kids like me from the same fate. I migrated to New York and became more than just that. I began feeling the need to do more and more. Just fighting for one specific purpose felt selfish in a way. Helping the defenseless has felt like my duty since I became defenseless that day.”
Not only as a member of the LGBTQ+ community, Nightbird’s coming out wields itself as inspiration to meta-humans and mutants born with the X-gene. As the Mutant and Meta-Human Registration Act debates continue across the nation, mutant and meta-human citizens alike fear the uncertainty of their futures.
Nightbird stands to be an example that those with powers and abilities do not choose to abuse them for personal gain. The hero chooses to protect his identity because he knows that if exposed, there would be unimaginable repercussions that could potentially land the hero in hiding. Many mutans and meta-humans face the same obstacles even without a superhero identity if the Mutant and Meta-Human Registration Act passes Senate.
Senator Robert Kelly, an active anti-mutant activist, has stated multiple times that the presence of heroes much like Nightbird is exactly why all mutant and meta-human citizens need to registered. “It ensures the safety of our ‘normal’ and human citizens.” Kelly has also previously backed the controversial notion of an extraterritorial prison specifically to keep prisoners from “infecting” the public with their criminal ways.
Nightbird asks of New York City’s citizens, “Be kind to one another. The world is a really scary place and so many people are so quick to resort to name-calling, bullying, and even violence [...] It just isn’t who we are supposed to be as a species. We’re all people with our own struggles in life and we quickly forget that when we’re desperate. Be kind to people, and even help people out if you have the means. A little kindness goes a really long way.”
The One With the Disagreement || Seblaine
Date: May 20th, 2017
Location: Hospital in New York City
Who: Blaine Anderson & Sebastian Smythe
Notes: Following Sebastian's seizure, he is brought to the hospital by Nightbird, still seizing. Blaine enters in civilian clothes to assess the situation.
Trigger Warning: mentions of seizures.
dis·a·gree·ment /ˌdisəˈɡrēmənt/ noun 1. lack of consensus or approval. synonyms: dissent, lack of agreement, difference of opinion, dispute; "there was some disagreement about the details"
Sebastian Smythe:
After Sebastian had been dropped off in the emergency room, he was left in the care of somewhat clueless doctors. They didn't know how to treat him; he didn't have a typical case of epilepsy. They'd shot him up with drugs in an attempt to stop the seizure he'd been having that had gone on for nearly ten minutes now but it didn't seem to be working. They had managed to hook his convulsing body to machines that flashed and blared angry red numbers, alerting the doctors of the seriousness that was Sebastian's panicking body.
“If this kid doesn't stop seizing, he's going to fry his brain!” One of the doctors claimed out loud, ordering a nurse to inject another dosage to hopefully halt Sebastian's seizure.
It wasn't until just moments after Blaine had rushed into the emergency room, just after a third futile dosage into Sebastian's thigh but right before a fourth, that his episode had finally stopped.
“Heart rate and breathing signs are… stabilizing?” A nurse said aloud, confused. Sebastian's breathing wasn't nearly as strained as a moment ago but it didn't stop a nurse from attaching a nasal cannula onto him just to be safe.
“Hook him up to an EEG machine. I need a neurologist in here, immediately!” The doctor barked, frustrated at the situation.
When he turned to leave the triage area, that was when a nurse approached and informed him of Blaine's arrival. “Doctor, the patient's husband is here.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine tried to hold himself together the best he could even though he knew he didn’t have to be on guard at that moment, he was just Blaine again. It was as if he was walking in slow motion as he followed the nurse to Sebastian. He glanced over the nurse’s shoulder to see if he could peek at his boyfriend, but no such luck. When they stood there in front of the doctor finally, the frazzled, frustrated look on the elder’s face wasn’t comforting.
“Hi, Blaine,” the doctor introduced himself.
“Is he… is he okay?” Blaine asked, saying a silent prayer that Sebastian was just fine and didn’t have any long-lasting damage. He said a quicker prayer that he was still alive. He didn’t even want to imagine.
The doctor sighed, rubbing the back of his neck as he looked at the shorter man. “Your husband’s seizure lasted way longer than what we call a medical emergency.” The statement made Blaine’s heart jump into his throat and the tears built up faster. “We got him to stop seizing finally and now he’s… stable for the time being. We don’t know what caused this yet or why it lasted so long so we’re going to hook him up and run some tests. We’re going to start with an EEG and I have a neurologist on her way right now to come take a look at him. He’s alive and stable… right now.” The doctor stressed, unsure of what exactly could be going on with the man laying on the bed, he didn’t want to get Blaine’s hopes up in case something were to happen under his watch.
Blaine nodded with only a sniffle as he listened to the doctor speak, wiping at his eyes with the back of his hands. “Uh, yeah, thank you so much, doctor. Can I… Is there room for me in there with him?” The doctor told him that he could see Sebastian while they were waiting for the neurologist to arrive but no promises for after then. Blaine didn’t argue.
Thanking the doctor once again, Blaine made his way to Sebastian’s bedside, looking down at his man, his gorgeous man. “Oh, honey,” he whispered, brushing his hand through Sebastian’s soft hair. “This was such a big, good day for you.” Blaine felt extremely saddened that the day had to end on such a sour note. “I love you, Sebastian,” he said, leaning down to press his lips against the taller’s forehead. “Please wake up for me, okay?” His voice was gentle as he reached behind him to grab the doctor’s stool. He stayed back just a little, knowing that if and when Sebastian woke up he’d be majorly disoriented and he didn’t want him to be anymore startled than necessary.
Sebastian Smythe:
The triage area where Sebastian was situated gave the two just a little bit of privacy, the standard hospital curtain obscuring them from at least half the other patients there. The steady beep of the EKG machine Sebastian was hooked up to was akin to a ticking clock-- each beep signaled another moment had passed where Sebastian remained unconscious.
It didn't take very long at all for a different doctor-- supposedly the neurologist-- to make an appearance, holding a chart and being briefed by an ER nurse. “We're going to run a few tests to make sure he's okay, alright?” she told Blaine after she'd introduced herself with a sweet smile.
“That won't be necessary.”
The neurologist turned around to see another woman in a lab coat standing in the doorway. “Excuse me? Who are you? I was paged for a neurological consult on this patient.”
“I'm Mr. Smythe's neurologist and personal physician; he's been seeing me since his first episode and I've been following his case very closely,” the woman told the doctor before flashing her medical identification at her. She snatched Sebastian’s chart out from the neurologist’s hands. “Please leave.”
The neurologist grumbled under her breath and scurried away. The woman turned to Blaine and extended her hand as she introduced herself. “My name is Doctor Caitlin Snow. I think you already heard me say I'm Sebastian's physician.” She produced from her lab coat pocket a syringe filled with a green liquid, the needle covered by a bright blue safety cap. She didn't hesitate to undo the safety cap and stick Sebastian in the arm with the green liquid.
The EKG machine beeped erratically for less than a moment-- too short to alarm anyone-- before it evened out again.
“He should wake up shortly,” she assured Blaine.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine tore his attention away from Sebastian when he heard the voices coming closer, watching the exchange between the two with raised eyebrows. His brow furrowed a little when the younger woman explained she’d been seeing Sebastian since his first seizure, he didn’t recall but in all fairness, he hadn’t gone with Sebastian to his doctor’s appointment. “H-hi, I’m Blaine. Nice to meet you.” He shook her hand.
He watched as she worked quickly with no hesitation, seamlessly. “What’s tha- oh.” He said when the machine beeped and then calmed down. “Oh. Really?” He asked her with a hopeful voice, looking down at his boyfriend, taking his hand once more. “What... Is he going to be okay? What’s going on with him?” Blaine asked, looking to her once more. “I don’t really understand all of this or why this is happening and honestly I’m really kind of freaking out right now,” he said, talking a little quickly. Though he was never one to have an anxiety problem, he was starting to feel physically exhausted with this worry of losing Sebastian.
Sebastian Smythe:
Snow’s jaw was set as she listened to Blaine and his questions. Truth be told, no one really knew what was happening to Sebastian or why he wasn’t getting better. According to Professor Garrick, the speed force should give him a healing factor and protect him. The more Sebastian’s condition worsened, the more it seemed that the speed force was actually hurting him. “I'll be honest with you, his case is increasingly concerning and he needs to be under close observation,” she explained. “The brain is already complex and Sebastian was struck by lightning. I don't think he'll ever have a normal life if he continues--”
“Wha-- Blaine?” Sebastian's scared voice cut through the room as he suddenly jerked awake, effectively interrupting Snow.
Sebastian weakly gripped his boyfriend's hand, his fear washing away when his eyes found Blaine's. He was still out of it and didn't know what happened but he knew Blaine was there and in that moment that was the most important thing to him. He found comfort in Blaine. “Did I have another seizure?” he asked as he tried to rub his eyes only to find there was a heart rate finger-clip attached to him. “... Why hospital?” he asked groggily, confused.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine listened intently to what Dr. Snow had to say, wanting every piece of information possible-- he figured that it wouldn’t hurt to relay some information to Santana and have her do her own research if this were to keep happening. Blaine’s head jerked towards Sebastian when he heard him waking up. “Sebastian,” he said, bringing the chair close once more to sit so he could be closer to his boyfriend. “Hey you’re okay,” he said in a hushed, gentle tone.
“Y-yeah, babe, you did. It was pretty bad this time. But you’re okay,” he assured him. “Nightbird brought you here to make sure you got the help you needed.” Blaine nibbled on his bottom lip, rubbing Sebastian’s hand with his thumb. “Are you okay? How are you feeling?” he asked carefully, his voice soft and words slowed as to not overwhelm him.
Sebastian Smythe:
“I’m fine..? I think?” Sebastian’s furrowed brow creased deeper as Blaine filled him in on what he’d apparently missed out. He didn’t remember the details to his episode yet and his memory was very foggy. When Blaine mentioned Nightbird, his eyes widened a bit and he tried to sit up in the hospital bed. “Nightbird! Where is he?!” he asked with urgency. His sudden movements caused a jolt of pain in his head and he slumped back down against the sheets.
“Probably not a good idea to get out of bed,” Snow warned, looking through his medical chart and making a few notes. “In fact, I’d strongly recommend bed rest tonight and staying home from work tomorrow, as well.” She turned to look at Blaine and smiled at him. “I trust your husband will be able to keep an eye on you?”
“Huh? What?” Sebastian mumbled, still out of it. “Husband..?” he looked between his doctor and Blaine, still confused.
Snow just chuckled softly, seemingly not too concerned now that Sebastian was awake and talking. She produced a business card from her coat pocket and handed it to Blaine. “Call me immediately the next time something like this happens or if you just have any concerns,” she told him. “I’ll call Sebastian tomorrow when he’s feeling better for a proper follow-up with testing.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine shook his head as Sebastian tried to sit up. “Hey, hey, slow down.” His words overlapped Dr. Snow’s as he motioned for the other to stay put. When Caitlin addressed him, Blaine nodded with certainty. “I will absolutely be keeping an eye on him, don’t worry.”
When Sebastian questioned Blaine’s title, it made the shorter chuckle. “Don’t you remember? I’m always your husband in the hospital,” he winked at him before turning his attention back to the young woman in front of him. He stood up to shake her hand. “Thank you so much, Dr. Snow. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you coming tonight,” he said with a grateful tone as he took the business card. “It’s nice to know Sebastian is in such good hands,” Blaine expressed, though he didn’t know much about Caitlin Snow, he felt comfortable with her. Plus, she managed to get Sebastian awake and she didn’t seem frazzled when the other doctors did.
Blaine returned to his seat next to Sebastian and took his hand again, holding it tight. “I’m so happy you’re awake,” he whispered looking at his boyfriend with care and worry. “I was really afraid when they told me you had been seizing for so long. Thank goodness for Dr. Snow or else you might not have woken up.” He shook his head, scooting a little close. “As for Nightbird, he couldn’t stay long because of the crowd, he didn’t want to draw attention away from you getting help- also he wanted me to know where you were as soon as possible.”
Sebastian Smythe:
It took a moment for Sebastian to catch onto what Blaine was telling him and when it did, he quirked a smile. “Right, I remember-- happily betrothed,” he assured as he remembered what Blaine had told the doctors after Sebastian had been struck by lightning.
He didn't have the energy to argue with Snow or talk about how he didn't need to take the day off; a few hours of sleep and he'd be back on his feet in no time. It was weird to see his two worlds coming together-- Snow was a direct connect to the Flash, talking to Blaine like a completely normal person. He supposed even people who weren't superheroes had their own secrets to hide.
Looking towards Snow, Sebastian knew he was in for a lecture the next time he went over to Professor Garrick's lab. Thankfully the doctor didn't seem angry right this moment and left the two men alone in peace.
“You talked to Nightbird? Did you get to see him?” Sebastian asked, slowly and surely coming out of his grogginess and becoming a bit more alert as time passed since his episode. “Shit, do I have my bag? My camera?” Sebastian wouldn't know what he'd do if the entire interview went down the drain because he'd lost his bag.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine shook his head as Sebastian asked about Nightbird. “Yeah-yeah I talked to him, he pulled me from home to come see you. I was really worried about you, I was afraid that I’d come in here and--” he stopped, shaking his head when Sebastian mentioned his bag. “Yeah, it’s here so I assume he brought it,” he assured him, feeling a twinge of guilt in his stomach because he knew his camera was nestled in the bag in shambles. Luckily he was sure the SD card was probably still just fine-- it was mostly the lens and camera that was damaged. “I’m sure your camera and everything is okay.
“Seb, please, don’t stress out. Everything is okay, your story is going to be great,” he nodded confidently as he wrapped his other hand around Sebastian’s. “You can worry about work and your story later, okay? You need to focus on relaxing right now and taking it easy,” Blaine suggested gently. “Dr. Snow said that this is concerning and your case is increasingly concerning and that we have to keep an eye on you.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian felt anxious, unaware of the exact location of his bag and its contents. “Hand it to me— I need my phone, I have to call my boss,” he insisted, his heartbeat picking up. Clearly Blaine’s suggestion to take it easy fell on deaf ears as he ignored his painful ailments.
“I just,” he grunted as he attempted to sit up again, “I need to write that article so it can get published before tomorrow..!” The EKG machine he was hooked up to started beeping but Sebastian paid no mind; he had a fast heart anyhow because of his abilities. In that moment the only thing that mattered to him was his Nightbird exclusive. “I swear I’m fine; we should get out of here so I can get to my laptop and—“
An ER nurse pulled back the curtain to the triage area Sebastian was sitting in, having been alerted by the urgent beeping. “Mr. Smythe, please calm down..!” She ordered, finally catching Sebastian’s attention. “Your doctor has ordered that you stay put for at least an hour for observation. You’re not going anywhere just yet.”
Blaine Anderson:
“Sebastian, really, you need to calm down— you don’t need to work yourself up so much,” Blaine said, standing up to try and coerce his boyfriend to sit still. “You aren’t writing anything tonight, you just--”
He was interrupted by the nurse coming into the room, barking at Sebastian. He was relieved for a moment when the nurse seemingly made Sebastian calm down, thankfully. His nerves were beginning to come unraveled as the previous hour had taken its toll on his already exhausted body. He stayed quiet until the nurse was finished.
He turned to the taller, trying his best to keep his composure. “Seb, please. You just had a seizure, you don’t need to worry with work right now. Your things are fine and you can work on it tomorrow. At home. In bed.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian's frustration grew when the nurse informed him that he had to stay in bed for at least a while longer. Between his pounding headache and both the medical staff and Blaine telling him to stay put, Sebastian just wanted to get the hell out of there. With an immature huff, he crossed his arms over his chest and laid back in the hospital bed.
“I guess it can wait until tomorrow…” he mumbled, compromising a bit and trying to relax. Looking over to his boyfriend, he realized he was stressing him out further. “I'm sorry. I just-- I was really looking forward to tonight and this stupid seizure… fucked everything up.” He let out another sigh and draped an arm over his eyes. What Blaine had said was true-- Sebastian really did need to rest and de-stress.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine took a deep breath and then took a seat next to Sebastian once again. “Thank you.” He said when Sebastian agreed to wait until the next day. Rubbing his face with his hands gently he sighed. “It’s okay. I know you were looking forward to tonight and I’m really sorry that this happened.” The shorter said, placing his hand on Sebastian’s. “But, this… you… you’re more important than that interview right now.” His hazel eyes glanced down as he nibbled on his bottom lip.
He felt really guilty for his feelings in that moment, he felt like crying. He wanted Sebastian to hold him and console him because he’d been so afraid that whole night. But Blaine knew that was selfish and Sebastian was the one who needed him in that moment. “Are you okay? Do you feel okay? How’s your head?” he asked, reaching forward to brush his hair back, gently touching his forehead.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian didn't quite share the same sentiment as Blaine that he was more important, but he wasn't about to say so out loud. This wasn't the time or place to argue.
Smiling softly when Blaine reached towards him to comfort him, Sebastian gripped his hand and gave a gentle nod. “I'm okay, I promise. Just tired from… everything, I guess. I have a headache but it's no worse than last time. I promise I'm okay,” he tried to reassure Blaine that everything was okay and that he could breathe a sigh of relief.
“Honestly, I just want to put this behind us. I hate seeing you so stressed out because of me and these stupid fucking seizures, and being stuck on bed rest isn't exactly my idea of a great time.” Sebastian let out a heavy sigh then, bringing Blaine's hand up to his lips. He pressed a gentle and slow kiss to the back of his hand, finally relaxing for the first time that night since they'd gotten to the hospital. “I love you. I promise everything will be better after tonight.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine’s forehead wrinkled a little sadly when Sebastian attempted to comfort him at first but by the time he felt the other’s lips against the back of his hand he began to feel slightly less tense and even managed a tiny smile. “I love you, too.” He said gently, moving his hand to brush his thumb against Sebastian’s cheek. “I hate seeing you like this, too.” I hate seeing you have a seizure. It was the most terrifying thing and he didn’t know if he would ever get used to it. He hoped he wouldn’t have to. “Hopefully Dr. Snow can help and we can get you on the right track so maybe this never happens again.” He said vaguely hopeful even if he didn’t know how much be believed it himself.
“I’m just thankful that you weren’t alone.” Blaine added, the thought of what might’ve happened had Sebastian been alone tonight when it happened made him sick to his stomach. Shaking his head, he tried to put the image behind him and focus on his boyfriend in front of him. He was awake, he was breathing, he was okay. Everything was okay for that moment in time. “I will just be happy to get you home and into bed. I know you’re safe here, but it’s less… scary… at home.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian gave a vague nod at the mention of Dr. Snow figuring something out. He, too, was uncertain where they were on the path to finding a cure. It wasn't something Sebastian liked to think about; this condition was almost like a crutch he felt like he might have to carry for the rest of his life. Still, Sebastian knew that his boyfriend thrived when all was well and there was nothing to worry about. “Hey, look at me!” Sebastian said in a cheerful tone despite his weariness, “I'm completely fine. I mean, I look like I had a rough night but in about an hour you and I are gonna be snuggled up in our bed together and you won't have any reason to be scared.”
He hoped his words and reassuring smile was enough to put Blaine's worries to rest-- at least for a little while-- until he could physically prove that he was at fit as a fiddle. Tonight was just a hiccup. “Besides, maybe you're right; if I wait to write the article, I can sell the story to a different paper. Like, this is the story of the century, B. I could get published in the Times. Can you imagine that-- my name-- in the New York Times?”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine let out a soft chuckle when Sebastian tried his best to make him feel like everything was fine. Unfortunately, Sebastian had no idea what it was like on his side of things just like Blaine had no idea what Sebastian had to go through. “I wish it was so simple.” He shook his head, looking down to play with the other’s fingers a little with his own, keeping his hand in his.
He held back an audible sigh when Sebastian mentioned the article again-- he knew Sebastian was really excited and he was excited for him, he just wished he was a bit more concerned with what happened and not with the article. Still, he couldn’t stop the small smile from creeping across his face as he looked at his boyfriend’s face. “I know, this is a story that no one else in the world has and you could actually take it anywhere you want.” He shook his head. “I’m really proud of you, Seb. Your name in the Times. It would be amazing. Well, your pseudonym, obviously.” He corrected, it would be far too dangerous for Sebastian’s name to be on the story-- everyone would be too interested in how he got such an in with Nightbird and they’d be all over him for more information. “Have you given any more thought to that, by the way? Have you decided on a name?”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian's brow creased at the mention of his pseudonym. Truth be told, he didn't want to use a fake name. He wanted the recognition and he wanted people-- editors, magazines, everyone-- to be knocking on his door offering him opportunities on a silver platter.
“Yeah, about that…” he started, speaking as he internally debated with himself. “I mean, I know we talked about this and everything but… Blaine, you weren't there; you didn't hear what Nightbird had to say and this interview… it was more than I could've ever wanted.” Sebastian recalled how Nightbird had come out as gay on the record. He tried to lean in as close as he could to his boyfriend and lowered his voice, “Blaine, Nightbird is the Gay Avenger. He told me he's gay..! I publish that story and I become like, the liaison for an LGBT advocate.”
Sebastian ran his fingers through his hair as he thought about the endless possibilities. He saw himself walking down the carpet at the GLAAD awards for his article… going on Ellen to share Nightbird's story to middle-aged people everywhere. Sebastian saw himself with the recognition he had always craved in his career.
“I almost died tonight because of this stupid seizure so I'm not playing it safe. I'm not going to use a pseudonym.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine’s face mirrored Sebastian’s when the other began speaking about possibly not using a pseudonym, his brow furrowing. He listened as the other continued to go on about Nightbird, not really reacting much because he was too focused on his complete disregard for his safety. When Sebastian mentioned almost dying, Blaine raised his eyebrows and nodded his head quickly. “Yeah, you almost died; that’s all the more reason why you need to be careful, Sebastian.” He shook his head, feeling his blood pressure rising along with his exhaustion. “It’s not like using a pseudonym makes you invisible from the credit-- the important people will know who you are. It’s not like there will be some stand-in for you-- it’s just a name.” He explained, staying as calm as he could for the time being.
“Babe, I know you really want all of the glory from this huge story that you have-- it’s so huge. There’s no way you’re taking it back to your job-- people will be begging you for this story once they know you have it. I just think because of that reason is why you should absolutely not publish it under your real name. It could be really dangerous-- there are really dangerous people out there in the world, especially the super world, that will want to know how you got such an in with Nightbird. They’ll assume you know how to get to him and they’ll take advantage of that.”
Sebastian Smythe:
It only niggled at Sebastian’s brain a little when he revealed that Nightbird was gay and Blaine showed no interest. Obviously his boyfriend was only concerned about his well-being at the moment and nothing else mattered. Not Nightbird, not this story-- only him. Sebastian wasn’t quite so like-minded.
“Yeah, exactly! People will be begging for me-- by name-- because they know I’ll have the scoop. What if Nightbird agrees to a second interview? What if I find out another extra juicy secret like his twin brother is an evil mastermind from Croatia? Who knows what I’ll unveil next and how many people will be wanting me to get the story.” Sebastian tried to argue his point. “Besides, dozens of people put themselves into danger every day… If some asshole villain has beef with me, I’m sure Nightbird will come to the rescue, anyway. Or maybe even the Flash.” He chuckled a little to himself then, thinking about how if he ever ran into trouble he could just get out of it with his abilities.
Sebastian thought about how else he could persuade Blaine into seeing things his way. “If I get my name out there and start getting recognition and making serious money, you won’t have to spread yourself so thin with work and school; you can focus completely on getting your teaching degree and maybe even start going back to auditions for Broadway stuff again. Wouldn’t that be amazing?”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine looked down as Sebastian spoke, trying to listen but it was hard, there was a wall going up in his mind that didn’t care at all what his reasoning was or what kind of story it was-- Sebastian’s safety was the most important thing and had he known Sebastian would go back on his word he would’ve never agreed to the interview. “Seb...” he said, shaking his head. His heart beating a little harder as he grew rather upset.
“Yeah, babe, all of that would be amazing but it can literally all still happen. None of that isn’t possible. It’s literally only a pseudonym. This is ridiculous, Sebastian. I really can’t believe you’re going back on what we talked about already-- you know how I feel about this.” He began to tear up out of frustration, his fuse shorter due to how tired he was. Letting go of the taller’s hand, he stood up, shaking his head. “Do you not care about literally everything I just said? Your career and our lives will not be affected by a pseudonym. It’s just a name.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian frowned as Blaine stood up, hearing the frustration in his voice. He understood what he was being told; he just didn't agree. “Of course I care about all of that, I just--” he sighed again, not wanting to push his opinion further since it was clearly making Blaine upset. “I feel like you're just being overly cautious about this because I just had a seizure less than an hour ago.”
He figured he would try just once more to convince Blaine, wanting to reassure him and quell his worries. “Nothing bad is going to happen to me; there have been other articles written about superheroes and nothing's happened to any of those people.” He wasn't sure if that statement was fact but maybe just saying it would help. Sebastian sat up a bit straighter in his hospital bed, trying to reach out for Blaine.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine furrowed his eyebrows, looking at Sebastian as if he was crazy. “Are you serious?” He asked, shaking his head. He knew that last statement was completely not true but he didn’t have specifics to back him up without blowing his cover. “I’m not being overly cautious because you just had a seizure, we had this conversation before all of this. Before you even met with Nightbird. There is no need at all for you to put yourself, me, and our future family in danger because you want to be greedy with your name.” He crossed his arms, letting out a huff, the tears getting a little heavier in his eyes.
“I can’t believe how stubborn you’re being about this. I can’t believe that you having your legal name on this is worth putting yourself-- both of us-- at risk. And you can’t just say nothing bad is going to happen to you when you have no idea. Did you know tonight was going to happen?” Blaine asked, more upset than the moment before. “No, no you didn’t. You have no way of knowing what is going to happen or what other people are thinking. These are super beings, Sebastian. It’s not something to play around with. Our lives are not something to play around with and if that’s not important to you then I don’t really know what more to say.” By the time he was finished he was more visibly upset than when the conversation began, his hands shaking out of frustration, the tears still threatening to fall-- one even escaping down his cheek.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian's frown deepened as they continued to argue; this was clearly something they weren't going to agree on despite what facts were out there. But Sebastian had to agree about one thing: he cared deeply for Blaine and his safety. He throw his entire career away before he let anything happen to Blaine. What was frustrating was that Sebastian couldn't tell him there was nothing to worry about because he himself was a super-powered being-- a metahuman that had a semi-decent alliance with Nightbird.
Seeing Blaine cry pulled at the heartstrings he usually denied existed. Tonight was an unmitigated disaster and making Blaine worry because of his seizure was one thing-- making him cry because of a stupid argument was another. “Fuck, Blaine… I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you upset, I--” Sebastian let out another sigh, rubbing the side of his head. “I mean, the recognition and credit would be amazing but… I don't want someone come after you just because they know I've done an interview with Nightbird.”
He reached over the bars of his hospital bed, reaching out further for Blaine and one of his crossed arms. “I'm sorry.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine sighed heavily, shaking his head again at Sebastian’s statement. He himself was frustrated that he couldn’t explain that while he may be a super being himself, he couldn’t protect Sebastian from everything. He would die trying, of course, but he couldn’t have eyes on him at all times to make sure he was safe. Not to mention that was creepy and he wasn’t that kind of significant other. He was also frustrated that the point of his argument was seemingly falling on deaf ears even still. “Why does it matter so much that the name Sebastian Smythe is on this article. Any other name you come up with will mean just as much it won’t be any less you.” He frowned, his forehead wrinkled as he looked at the other sadly. His voice was softer in that moment, tired.
He looked down at Sebastian’s hand as it rested on his crossed arm before he shrugged one of his shoulders gently. “It’s not just about me...it’s mostly about you. Why can’t you understand that?” Blaine lifted his eyes to Sebastian, his face fallen. “Why can’t you understand that this is all a lot?” He motioned vaguely at where they were, implying their current situation. “I’m terrified, Sebastian.” With a crack in his voice, the shorter sniffled. “You could have died today. You didn’t-” He almost let it slip that he’d watched him seize for so long, that he was the one there when it began. “Your career and dreams are so important to me and I am so incredibly proud of you and what you’ve got here and I know that it is going to be amazing. I don’t doubt that at all. I just...really need you to be smart about this.” He said, taking a beat and then placing his hand on his head, closing his eyes. A sharp pain flitted across his forehead, running down into his eyes.
Sebastian Smythe:
“Hey, hey…” Sebastian coaxed, trying to pull Blaine closer to him. Even if he felt the exact same right now as he did the last time he had a seizure, he wasn't there to know what was actually happening. He remembered stories of how he had to be resuscitated multiple times after being struck by lightning and Blaine just had to stand on the sidelines, watching and feeling helpless.
“Okay. I'll be smart and I won't publish it under my name-- not my real one, anyways,” he told Blaine. “You're the most important thing to me and you're right that I should be more careful; maybe if I'd been more careful tonight this wouldn't have happened. I mean, I could do better to get an extra hour or two of sleep every night and maybe I need Dr. Snow to increase my medicine dosage.
“I won't use my real name, okay?” He looked to Blaine then, Hoping that by agreeing and coming to this decision together, he would finally calm down.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine looked at Sebastian, his face in a slight pout as he let Sebastian pull him closer. He went as far as actually sitting on the bed next to his boyfriend as he looked down, taking his hand again. He gave a slight nod when Sebastian finally agreed against using his real name to publish the article. “Okay,” he whispered. He felt defeated somehow even though his side of the argument came out on top.
The day-- and past weeks-- had really taken its toll on the young man’s small body and he was close to pure exhaustion and in that moment he felt rather sad. He felt tired and scared. His forehead wrinkled a little more as he kept his gaze down, fiddling with Sebastian’s hand. “I’m really sorry, I just….you’re really important to me and you’re really all that I have in this world and I don’t want to lose you.” His voice was heavy with tears and a few more escaped from his eyes, rushing down his cheeks, the weight of the day weighing heavily on him.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian nodded when Blaine expressed his feelings to him. He had underestimated how much stress Blaine really was under and it made him feel like a bad boyfriend. He needed to be better and that included taking better care of himself as to not make Blaine worry. “I know, B. You won't lose me, okay? I'm not going anywhere and remember, you slipped through my fingers once before so now you're stuck with me for life,” Sebastian gave a little chuckle after his mini pep talk, hooking a finger under the smaller man's chin and gently pulling up to meet him eye to eye. “I promise, okay? I'll do my best not to do anything stupid-- not even for a Pulitzer prize.”
Sebastian brought Blaine into a tight hug, wanting him to know that even though he was stuck in this ER bed, Blaine could always count on him. “After this stupid hour of observation is up, you and I are going to go home and get a real good night's rest. I'll be honest and tell you I have a killer headache so I'll actually stay home from work and take it easy… so I don't want you to worry about me so much. That means you actually have to sleep, too.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine didn’t resist when Sebastian lifted his chin so their eyes could meet. He held his boyfriend’s gentle gaze for a moment, giving a weak half smile when Sebastian chuckled and promised he was stuck with the taller forever. “Good, I want to be, you know.” He said softly before leaning down into the hug, careful not to tangle himself in and of the wires attached to the other.
Letting his eyes fall closed, Blaine could still feel the tears built up in his eyes, the pressure in his sinuses. He wanted to cry, he wanted to cry hard, but he would save it for later when Sebastian wasn’t around. He didn’t want to make him feel guilty. “I’m always going to worry about you, Sebastian.” Blaine said, scooting up in the bed so he was a little taller than Sebastian. Slipping his arm under the taller so he could pull him in close, giving Sebastian the chance to rest his head on Blaine’s chest. “C’mere,” He leaned in to press a gentle kiss to the other’s forehead. “You are… my whole world, you know.”
Sebastian Smythe:
“You're going to give yourself premature wrinkles if you keep worrying so much,” Sebastian replied in a teasing manner. “By the time you decide you wanna have a kid, you'll already look like a grandpa.”
When Blaine maneuvered them on the bed so Sebastian could nestle his head against his boyfriend's chest, Sebastian breathed a slow and even breath. The way his body rejoiced as he finally let himself relax told Sebastian he needed to calm down significantly to stay healthy. All the adrenaline he had going through him dissipated and he smiled gently at Blaine's soothing words. “You're my world, too, Blaine.” He carefully reached a hand up to cup the side of the other's face, opening his mouth to speak as he closed his eyes. “I'm sorry I made you cry; I didn't mean to.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine let his own eyes fall closed once again as they settled in the bed more comfortably, it felt good to have Sebastian in his arms. Even though he still felt scared, he felt a little more relaxed with their bodies so close together. It was like Sebastian’s energy radiated safety and it was something Blaine craved in those moments. It felt like home, Sebastian felt like home.
“It’s okay,” he whispered, turning his head to kiss the palm of Sebastian’s hand. “I’m okay,” he lied as to ease the other’s mind. “We’re both just really stubborn and passionate. Disagreements are bound to happen,” he said, gently running his hand up and down Sebastian’s back.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian knew that the minute he was feeling better, he had to pay close attention to Blaine. The man already spread himself too thin between school and work, and having to worry about this wasn't helping either. “Good,” he replied, even if he didn't fully believe it. “I'm okay too, so I need you to be okay.”
They stayed like that in the bed until the doctors seemed it alright for Sebastian to go home. Fortunately there weren't any problems in getting Sebastian home (with the exception of some sleep-inducing yawns from both of them on the way). Once they were back in their apartment, Sebastian let his boyfriend lead him towards the bedroom. Like Blaine said, he could get to his camera and the recorded interview when the time came tomorrow after he was feeling better.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine was grateful that the hour seemed to go by fast enough and Sebastian was released from the hospital. He made sure to grab Sebastian’s bag for him, trying to delay the realization that his camera was broken. He kept a close eye on Sebastian the whole way home, watching him for any signs of abnormalities in his actions or personality; thankfully there were none and he seemed perfectly fine.
Once they were home, Blaine carefully discarded their things on the kitchen counter when they returned home and led Sebastian straight to their bedroom. He fussed over Sebastian like a hovering parent, undressing him and getting him into bed. He excused himself for a moment to wash his face in the bathroom, letting himself cry a little so he could relax a bit once he was in bed. Maybe he’d shower later to cry some more, but he wasn’t going to cry in front of Sebastian tonight. After a couple of deep breaths, Blaine made his way back into the bedroom. He smiled to himself a little at the sight of Sebastian in the bed, climbing up into the bed next to him and cuddling close to him. “Mmm,” he sighed in mild contentment. “I’m really glad you’re okay.” Blaine whispered, pressing his lips against Sebastian’s gently for a sweet kiss. “I love you, Sebastian.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian didn't protest to Blaine's hovering actions, aware that he was reasonably worried and having him hover was better than him having crying again. Besides, it was kind of nice to have Blaine pay such close attention to him. In the morning, Sebastian would make everything up to him and cook him a delicious breakfast and make sure to spend the day with him not worrying about work or Nightbird or anything else.
When the day was finally coming to a close and the two were together in their own home, in their own bed, Sebastian felt the most at ease than he'd ever felt in his entire life. “Of course I'm okay; nothing is gonna happen to me,” Sebastian replied as he moved in for another lazy kiss in the muted dark. “I love you, Blaine.”

Blaine Anderson:
Blaine had been thankful that considering how up and down his personal life had been that his alter ego’s life had been pretty quiet. He’d of course been out every night to make sure everything was okay, only having to deal with small, petty crimes here and there. For the most part the city had been quiet and he was free to enjoy his routine with his boyfriend that he’d happily settled into. He’d go to school, work, and come home and spend as much time with Sebastian as possible before he made his rounds as Nightbird-- he was content and he was happy.
Of course, as always, all good things must come to an end and on one of his work-free nights that he had planned to spend with Sebastian was interrupted by a series of urgent texts from Sam. Nightbird’s nemesis had broken free and was gallivanting around the city terrorizing people. He did his best to give Sebastian a reasonable story as to why he had to cut their night short, promising to make it up to him as soon as he could and as quick as possible, he made his way to the roof to change and flew off into the twilight sky, the location that Sam had given him in mind.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian had settled comfortably into his life with Blaine. Despite a few hiccups with his abilities and puzzling symptoms, everything else was as normal as could be. He and Blaine were living together and after Sebastian had opened up a few weeks ago, he felt closer to the other than ever before. It felt like the only thing he was really only hiding from Blaine was the fact that he was a speedster and that was a secret he would take to his grave if he could help it. He went out infrequently now that he had to keep his physical condition under a scrutinizing and careful observation; he remembered that the medicine that kept his seizures under control only worked well when he didn’t overexert himself or his powers. Which, all in all, was all perfectly fine because the Flash was no superhero and he left Nightbird to take care of the scum of the city.
On a night both he and Blaine had free and made plans to spend together, the latter suddenly told him that he needed to be somewhere. Although disappointed, Sebastian understood that Blaine led a very active and busy lifestyle; he was juggling both work and school and both were pushing him in the direction to get places. Now left alone, Sebastian decided on watching some TV while eating the rest of the leftovers in the house without Blaine there to witness him and his voracious appetite. Halfway through a rerun of The Big Bang Theory, the show was interrupted by a breaking news story. Sebastian straightened up in his seat and paid attention as the words Doctor Light Escapes from Jail, Police Chase in Manhattan were displayed in bold letters at the bottom of the screen. He chuckled then, finding it amusing that anyone thought a regular jail would be enough to hold a metahuman captive.
Blaine Anderson:
As Nightbird kept a vigilant eye on the surrounding areas of the address he was supposed to be finding Doctor Light at, he made a mental note to politely suggest they keep the powerful villain somewhere other than just a regular prison cell once they catch her again. He didn’t think he’d really have to suggest that and yet there they were. He supposed normal people really didn’t have knowledge about super-beings and it wasn’t too surprising that they didn’t know how to capture them-- he should’ve known.
He went over possible scenarios of how to take care of the situation as his eyes landed on a street that was being illuminated in what could only be Light’s abilities. Rolling his eyes to himself he flew in the direction of the lights and landed on a building’s ledge just above what was happening-- he didn’t understand what this woman had to gain from terrorizing the city. What she gained from throwing a wrench in people’s plans. Through squinted eyes, he watched for a brief moment as the NYPD stood against her, shielding themselves from her light while firing their guns blindly, chuckling to himself. He appreciated the help when it came to the super-beings of the city but they stood no chance against her. Nightbird quickly cased the street-- he needed to get her someplace dark so he could have the upper hand -- and unfortunately for him there seemed to be no spot easily reachable for his plan. Lucky for him, however, he had his special mask just for situations like this when he’d have to fight against her. With a grin on his face, his lifted from his perching stance and reached for the mask on his belt only to realize it was gone. He pat all around on his belt and under his cape, turning to look on the rooftop behind him-- it must not have been securely attached on the flight over. Perfect.
Huffing out a heavy breath of hot air, Nightbird quickly changed plans and flew down to the scene. He would have to deal with her the old-fashioned way.
When he landed, he could hear the murmurs of relief coming from the first responders as they began to fall back behind him.
“Well, well, took you long enough to show up.” He could hear the grin in her tone. “Getting older, Birdie? Getting a little slower?” She chuckled darkly, coming out of the shadows shaking her head.
“Don’t you get tired of me chasing you and losing every time you fight me?” His tone was cocky as he crossed his arms over his chest, keeping a careful eye on her. He noted that she looked a little more tired than usual-- seemingly ragged. Prison must not have sat well with her.
The woman tilted her head, clicking her tongue against her teeth. “Now, now,” She wagged her finger. “I seem to remember not losing to you, last time, Birdie. The Flash was the one who caught me and…” She looked around before shrugging. “Oh, would you look at that-- he’s nowhere to be seen.” Light chuckled once more, shaking her head and taking a step closer. “No, no, Nightbird-- I don’t lose to you. I didn’t come here to lose to you. I came here to finish you once and for all.” Her voice shook with growing rage as she got closer to him.
He assessed her demeanor, his brow furrowing slightly at the way she seemed less amused by their run-in and angrier to see him. It threw him off ever so slightly, and clearly it was visibly so because it made her stop and laugh. “Oh? Did I frighten the tiny little bird?”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian sat in the comfort of his living room, watching Nightbird appear on the scene from a bird eye’s view thanks to the local news helicopter hovering high above. The camera zoomed in on the hero and villain, and a notable detail had Sebastian squinting his eyes to be sure he was seeing correctly. Nightbird was facing off against one of his biggest nemeses whose ability just happened to be one of his biggest weaknesses, and the guy wasn’t wearing his light-reflecting mask. “You’re going to get yourself killed, you idiot!” Sebastian said out loud as he motioned towards the TV. The news was unable to pick up on the ongoing conversation but it was clear Doctor Light was especially angry tonight.
The cameraman was able to capture the moment Light shot a blast from her gauntlet, causing Nightbird to shield himself with his cape. Maybe the superhero could hold his ground against the villain but Sebastian would rather not take that chance. Considering the last time Bird Boy went up against his arch-nemesis, he nearly lost-- at least from the Flash’s point of view-- the masked hero could use all the help he could get.
In an instant, Sebastian was out the door and changing into his signature red costume, speeding down the streets of Manhattan as just a red blur to the ordinary eye. He arrived on the scene, coming up behind Doctor Light and knocking her to the ground before taking his place next to Nightbird. “Hey, Birdie, sorry I’m late; you looked like you needed help. Considering how I was the one who caught her last time, I figured I should stop by before you get yourself hurt.”
Doctor Light struggled to her feet, shooting another beam of light towards the two superheroes. “Get lost, Flash! This is between me and Nightbird!”
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird felt a bit less confident than usual going up against Light without his handy mask, and her attitude towards him made him a little worried but he knew that there was no time to become a coward-- people counted on him. Sebastian was counting on him to come home and finish their night in. He needed to handle the situation and handle it quickly. He was able to dodge Light’s beams effortlessly as usual with his reflecting cape, sending the beams bouncing off into the night, barely missing her. He was thankful for her showing off her boring set of skills as it was giving him time to mentally prepare a plan to take her down.
However, his train of thought was rudely interrupted by an unwanted guest. Letting down his cape briefly catch a glimpse of the red speedster, Nightbird huffed. “What are you doing here? I don’t need your help.” He said, ducking behind his cape once again to reflect Light’s beam. “You’re going to get both of us killed.” He said through gritted teeth as he reached to the back of his belt to grab his trusty Birdarangs- they had proven effective that last time he’d taken her on without his mask and when the moment presented itself he tossed a couple of them out in her direction in hopes this would be the end all for this fight tonight. He wanted to prove his point to Red and get on home to his boyfriend. “Now, if you don’t mind, I have a job to do and I would appreciate it if you didn’t get in the way.”
Nightbird lifted off the ground slightly, as his Birdarangs came back to him having missed their target. “Dammit,” He muttered, wrapping his cape around himself as he sent them back out.
Sebastian Smythe:
The Flash stayed out of harm’s way effortlessly; Doctor Light wasn’t very quick on her toes even if her attacks literally moved at the speed of light. Her movements were easy enough to predict that he could dodge them with just a few super steps in one direction or another. From a glance, he could immediately deduce that Nightbird was playing a strong defensive game against his foe and Sebastian would bet it had to do with the fact that he wasn’t wearing that fancy mask he wore the last time he faced up against Doctor Light.
Light’s focus seemed to be on taking down Nightbird and Sebastian truly wanted to help out the hero; though he himself was no hero like Nightbird, he didn’t ever want to see the guy seriously hurt, either. But Nightbird seemed insistent on doing things on his own and the last time he intervened, he sort of screwed things up for the guy. Their rivalry as super-powered beings was entertaining but the last thing he wanted to do was to get on the hero’s bad side to the point where he was labeled a supervillain. “Alright, alright, Birdie; whatever you say,” the Flash relented, throwing up his hands in defeat before running off to a nearby magazine stand and returning with an issue of Entertainment Weekly in tow. “I’ll be here, reading… Just holler if you need me,” he called out to the hero before pretending to read his magazine. He realized he was being silly and Nightbird was probably rolling his eyes but he was snarky without the mask-- of course he’d be snarky with it on as well. He kept his eyes peeled on the ongoing fight, ready to step in at Bird Boy’s command.
Doctor Light laughed as she continued her barrage of light beams at the caped crusader. “Your hubris will be your downfall, Nightbird!” With the hero insisting on this being a fair, one-on-one fight, Light could very well do slip some of her dirty-handed tricks to tip the scales in her favor.
Blaine Anderson:
True to character, Nightbird rolled his eyes at the speedster’s sass as he glanced towards him sitting there with the magazine. “Have you always had this incessant need for snark?” He asked as he turned his attention back to the matter at hand. “Now, Stop distracting me I-Ah!” Before Nightbird could finish his sentence, he turned right into the bright, flashing glare of one of Light’s beams coming straight for him. He wasn’t fast enough and instead of blocking the beam with his cape he found himself landing on the cold ground with a heavy thud right on his hip.
It took him a moment to realize what had happened and he tried to get up as quickly as possible but when he tried to move he felt a sharp pain shoot from hip down to his ankle and up his side simultaneously, making it hard for him to move in that moment. Worse than that, however, the pain his hip was overpowered by the throbbing behind his eyelids. “Crap,” He cursed, pushing through the pain of his hip to scoot back a little and get his cape wrapped around himself. He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes as his mind raced with what his next move should be-- he didn’t have much time as Light would be taking advantage of him being down for the count in those moments. The ache behind his eyes was increasing with every moment but he couldn’t sit still any longer-- even if he’d only been down for seconds it was entirely too long.
Quickly he moved to stand up and then he did, he realized that even though he’d opened his eyes-- he couldn’t see. Her beam of light had been so fierce that it had blinded him, all he could do was vaguely make out the dim glow of the lights around them. He panicked in that moment- unsure of what to do. Quickly wrapping himself in his cape as it was his best chance at not being killed in that moment he reached into his pocket for his bird-phone to contact Santana and Sam to warn them but he couldn’t manage without his sight. He was a dead man.
Sebastian Smythe:
With Nightbird complaining at him, Sebastian hadn't seen Doctor Light's attack until it was too late. Just as soon as he jumped into action, the caped hero was stumbling on the ground. Quickly assuming the role of superhero, Sebastian ran straight at Doctor Light. It was a no-brainer that with her gauntlets, her weakness was hand-to-hand combat. If he brought the fight to her, there was no way she could catch him off-guard. He threw a look over his shoulder towards Nightbird, who had wrapped himself up in his large cape. “Big Bird! You okay in there?!” he hollered back as he parried a punch from Light.
Having speed on his side was beneficial in this fight especially; while light may have arguably been faster than him, it didn't mean Doctor Light moved that fast herself. With his superhuman speed he was able to unfasten the gauntlets from her hands, throwing them well away from reach. Now unarmed, the Flash was free to punch her lights out-- pun intended-- and let the police handle the rest.
Flash rushed over to the tightly-wrapped cape over Nightbird's crouched-over form. He knelt down and placed a hand on his back. “Nightbird, are you okay?” He’d never seen the hero like this; in almost all his fights against villains it seemed like Nightbird had the upper hand. He'd never seen him so defenseless.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine was focused on the searing pain in his eyes as he wrapped his cape tighter around himself, a groan of pain escaping through his gritted teeth. “I’m fine!” He hollered back towards the speedster, not wanting it to be any more obvious that he was weakened in that moment. He could hear a brief moment of commotion before it ended and people were cheering around them. He flinched when he felt a hand on his back but relaxed a little when it was only The Flash. With a heavy sigh of defeat, Nightbird knew exactly what had happened-- Red took his thunder and saved him right in front of the entire watching city. He’d have to retire immediately. He would now be the laughing stock of all of the metahumans and mutants. All of the villains in the world would see him and just pity him rather than challenge him, his career as everyone’s hero was over because now he was the one who needed saving. And, oh, Sebastian. He would definitely be making fun of Nightbird later and he wouldn’t even be able to defend himself. He felt like flying away and hiding out for forty years.
When Nightbird was done with his frantic dramatics, he finally felt mildly grateful that he could relax and not worry about being killed right in front of everyone - including his boyfriend whom was no doubt watching at home. “Yeah, I’ll be fine.” He said taking a deep breath, letting his guard down only a little. “I just can’t see-- she blinded me.” Nightbird admitted, shaking his head. “I’m such an idiot.” The last statement was mostly for himself, scolding himself for thinking he could take her on without his mask. His eyes had gotten older and she’d gotten stronger- he had no chance against her. “I need to get out of here...I can’t linger-- the crowd is safe so they’ll come closer. I can’t talk to anyone like this.” Nightbird said, quickly flicking his cape from around him so he could jump up into flight but he hit the wall and fell to his feet again- much like an injured bird.
Sebastian Smythe:
Watching and listening intently, Sebastian was aware that Nightbird was more injured than he was letting on. When the man behind the cape mentioned the nearing crowed, Sebastian looked around and sure enough people were starting to approach the two-- including reporters who wanted an interview. He watched with a curious and amused expression on his face as Nightbird attempted to stumble away, failing miserably. “Alright, Big Bird, stop flapping around and let me help you out of this joint.” He made sure to grab onto Nightbird tightly before speeding off someplace safe. Luckily with his powers, there was no way anyone could track them; Nightbird could recover without risking his identity. As much as Sebastian thought it'd be the story of the century to have the hero's identity exposed, it wasn't safe for him if the public knew who he really was. That didn't mean that Sebastian couldn't know, though.
He took them up to a rooftop, away from prying eyes. There, they had their privacy and maybe Sebastian could actually butter the guy up into giving away his true identity. “Has this ever happened to you before? Not being able to see?” he asked Nightbird, scratching his head. He was almost contemplating taking him over to Professor Garrick's because he might have a better idea of what to do. “Maybe you should take off the mask; it’s probably cutting circulation off to that fat head of yours and that’s why you can’t see.” Okay, so that most likely wasn't true and was just Sebastian's lame attempt to get the guy to give up his identity but could you blame a guy for trying?
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird wanted to protest when he was being picked up by the speedster but he was being carried off so fast and he was in too much pain that he just let the other take him. Once they were settled on the nearby rooftop and the Flash placed him down, Nightbird took the opportunity to sit for a moment, rubbing his eyes gently. He had to admire the Flash’s cheeky attempt at persuading him out of his mask. “Subtle, Red,” he chuckled with a shake of his head. “Yeah, no, this happened this badly once before-- that’s when my team made the special mask for me,” he explained as he took a breath, letting himself relax just a bit.
Admittedly it would feel better for him to take off his mask but he didn’t dare reveal his civilian identity to anyone-- much less the Flash as he was unsure of where they stood in the grand scheme of things. “I’ll be fine in a bit-- I heal pretty quickly. My eyes are just really sensitive. Hence the night part of Nightbird.” Nightbird blinked hard, squeezing his eyes shut before opening them again, letting them flutter for a moment. He could still just barely make out the Flash’s outline and it made him sigh. It was bad this time-- his eyes were going to be really sensitive over the next few days. “I’ll be able to see well enough to fly out soon.” He didn’t sound too confident--the longer he sat there in the dark, the more he realized that his was the worst he’d ever been hit. He could hide his disability well enough for a few days but Sebastian couldn’t be fooled for much longer than that, he was sure. He’s have to come up with a believable story about why he’d been gone and what happened to his eyes. Letting out another heavy sigh, Nightbird leaned his head back against the brick ledge of the building he was sitting against. With his eyes falling closed, he brought his focus back to his current location and situation. He was sitting on a rooftop, vulnerable, with the Flash-- who had just saved his life.
As much as he hadn’t wanted the other’s help, he was thankful Red had showed up when he did. Had he been hit this hard and not been saved by the Flash, he wouldn’t have made it home to Sebastian at all. “Uh,” He cleared his throat, swallowing his pride a bit. “Thanks for, um, saving me back there. I really appreciate it.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian couldn’t help but to bask in the moment of having his favorite superhero of all-time actually thanking him. While he never intended to play the role of superhero since he really just wanted to have a good time with his powers, to actually get the guy out of a pickle and save the day felt rewarding and it was a story he’d definitely be telling to Garrick and Snow the second he got the chance.
“Yeah, I’m pretty awesome like that. No biggie,” he shrugged his shoulders and crossed his arms over his chest. Sebastian really wanted to gloat some more but he didn’t want to piss the guy off-- not when he had him right he wanted him. “Y’know, this means you pretty much owe me one-- considering I saved your life and all…” Sebastian required a bit of finesse to manipulate the situation into his favor further. “If you really wanted to show your appreciation, you could do something for me for a change.”
While Sebastian knew Nightbird couldn’t currently see his expression, he was sure he could feel the look of complete self-gratification plastered across his face. “Not only did I save your life, but I just saved your identity from the press. Those reporters would’ve had a field day if they cornered you and ripped off that flimsy little mask of yours.”
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird wasn’t surprised in the least bit that the speedster was absolutely going to blackmail him into a favor- he was impressed by just how fast he was jumping at the chance. Shaking his head, laying one of his hands over his eyes as he chuckled once more; he couldn’t see, that was true, but he could hear the smug grin on his face. “God, I can feel you practically bouncing with the need to gloat.”
With a soft sigh, Nightbird’s lips curled up a little into a small smile. “Okay, what exactly are you wanting from me?” He asked, figuring he couldn’t exactly argue. He technically did owe Red for saving his life, he just was wary of whatever it might be that was dancing around in the taller’s head.
Sebastian Smythe:
Just like Nightbird had to be careful of his own identity, Sebastian had to watch his own as well. He couldn’t just come right out and say, “Give me an interview” and then show up as Sebastian Smythe; that was too much of a dead giveaway and even Bird Brain could connect the dots. This was an issue for Sebastian because through his powers and abilities he had Nightbird exactly where he wanted him but no idea how to get what he wanted without exposing himself.
“The world wants to know more about the famous Nightbird,” he started, unsure himself of where he was headed with this statement. “I get that you can’t risk your identity or your weaknesses because duh, Light and other baddies will use that against you but you’re this mysterious superhero that just showed up one day-- no warning. Don’t you want a cool superhero comic or blockbuster movie to be made about you one day when you’re old and retired?” He shrugged his shoulders then, unsure of how to come about the question without asking it. A thought came to mind and it made him chuckle, “I could play you in the movie version; I’m probably better-looking than you, anyway.”
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird rolled his eyes when the speedster suggested that he expose himself at least a little to the public. For what? So he could get praise? A comic book? A movie? While it was nice to be appreciated for all that he did-- that wasn’t why Nightbird threw on his cape almost every night. He did it because it was his duty to keep the city he loved safe from harm. He was given a gift and just like his mother- he didn’t want to let it go to waste when there were others who weren’t so fortunate that needed his help. When Red suggested that he was better looking than him, Nightbird let out a chuckle. “Oh? Are you?” He raised an eyebrow in the other’s general direction, still unable to see clearly. “If I weren’t blind right now I’d challenge you to prove it. But even if you took off your mask I couldn’t see.” He smiled a little, sighing softly as he took the other’s request into consideration.
Why would anyone care to know that underneath the suit and gadgets that he’s just Blaine Anderson? Well...other than the fact it would expose Nightbird being the Aurora’s son, therefore exposing his entire family and putting them all in grave danger. It wasn’t worth it to let the public know him- he didn’t need the public to know him. “Why would the public care to know anything about me anyway? Except to use it against me..” He shook his head, pressing the heels of his hands against his eyes again as they ached. “What would I even tell them? Who would I tell?” Sebastian crossed his mind-- if he were to expose in any way to any one in the world it would be Sebastian. It would also help his career. “How do I let people know me without exposing myself and my family?” He asked aloud. “What do people want to know other than my real identity?”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian completely understood the hero’s worries. So far, Nightbird had done a pretty good job about keeping his identity a secret. Even Sebastian had no clues about the guy until he was gifted with powers of his own; at least now he knew what Nightbird sounded like. When posed with the question of what the people wanted to know, Sebastian tried approaching with honesty. As once just a fan of the hero instead of a rival of sorts, the Sebastian from a year ago would’ve absolutely died seeing an interview with the masked man himself.
“Your motives.” He said, voice calm and level, speaking with much less sass and much more certainty. “Right now you’re just this dude that swoops in at nighttime and saves the day. You’re like an enigma and there’s still people that doubt you exist even though you work, like, every single night.” He recalled their first meeting when he’d first asked Nightbird about his motives; the man’s seemingly selfless actions kind of irked Sebastian a bit. Maybe because Sebastian was very selfish himself or because he just wasn’t as good-natured as New York’s friendly neighborhood Nightbird. “Anyway, you do this whole song and dance without reason and it makes people skeptical.” It pisses me off.
Clicking his tongue, Sebastian shook his head and huffed out an annoyed breath of air. “I’m not saying you gotta go and reveal yourself all of a sudden but if you did some kind of interview with someone you trusted, it’d be really cool. It’s not like you have to go on a daytime talk show and open up about your feelings or have Maury tell you you’re the father of some kid you never knew you had-- I’m talking about a short, published interview.”
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird chuckled at the Maury reference as he shook his head. Taking a moment, he really took in the Flash’s words and considered them genuinely. He supposed some sort of small interview with someone he trusted wouldn’t be the worst thing in the world. He would have to figure out a way to choose Sebastian without blowing his cover. “My motives...” He said, sighing as he rubbed his eyes again. The pain was still predominant and his vision wasn’t anywhere close to coming back yet.
“So, people really want to know why I do this?” He asked, settling a little more against the wall. He does this because his mom taught him. She would tell him that they were given a gift that most aren’t fortunate enough to receive and they should use it to help others who can’t help themselves. But he couldn’t share that without giving up his or her identity. “I don’t know, I just felt like— others don’t have this gift and I should help those who can’t help themselves.” He shrugged. “It just felt like the right thing to do.” Biting on his lip, Nightbird shook his head once more. “It’s not much deeper than that. I just felt like I should.” He chuckled. “What else would they want to know? My favorite color? Favorite band?”He teases.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian knew that Nightbird had a story to tell. Hell, he himself had his own story to tell but the masses wanted to hear about the hero, not the guy that just showed up a few weeks ago. Nightbird was the super secret hero everyone adored, not him. Sebastian didn't want to be that guy because he just wasn't that guy.
“Yeah, yeah, right,” Sebastian waved his hand even though Nightbird couldn't see him, “You've told me before and even though I think that's freaking stupid…” He dropped his hands and let out a sigh. “Look, I don't get it but you give the people hope. Like, actual people and especially kids look up to you because you're this selfless hero or whatever.” I look up to you. He scratched the top of his head despite it being covered by his cowl-- mostly out of frustration. Suddenly, he had an idea. “Wait here.”
He zoomed away, leaving Nightbird by himself for just a few seconds before bolting back. He hit Nightbird over the head with a folded piece of paper. “Names. I happen to follow a few fanatics and fans of yours alike and when you get out of this Stevie Wonder phase, you can give it a look.” He dropped the list of names in Nightbird's lap. He sincerely hoped that his name would be picked out of the list; it was sort of a longshot but Sebastian couldn't think of any other way to get his name into Nightbird's hands.
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird listened as the speedster reminded him of how people thought about him- how they loved him and how he gave them hope. It was nice to hear. Doing a sometimes thankless job completely voluntary wore on him sometimes and it was nice to be reminded why he did this in the first place.
Hearing the whooshing of wind around them, Nightbird assumed that the Flash had gone elsewhere briefly and then he felt something in his lap. A list of names to choose from for this interview he was agreeing to. “Names.” He repeated, picking up the paper and tucking it away safely in his boot. He couldn’t help but chuckle softly at the Stevie Wonder joke, thinking the man was clever. “Okay, I promise I’ll look the list over when I can see.” He agreed before sighing in frustration and rubbing at his eyes, his vision only improving ever so slightly. “Thanks again for having my back tonight, I do appreciate it a lot.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian was glad that at the moment, the hero was blind. He blushed bright red when Nightbird thanked him that he was almost certain his face would disappear behind his red cowl. “Y-yeah, don't even mention it,” Sebastian cleared his throat. “I mean, someone's gotta save your ass and it might as well be me since I'm better than you.” He'd gone right back to smartass self again. No way was Sebastian about to reveal that he actually had a lot of respect for his rival and that being thanked for essentially saving his life was really freaking cool.
“Don't forget your nerdy goggles next time, Birdy.” Sebastian told him, “I'll be on the lookout for your big exposé!” With that, Sebastian dashed off and left the hero by himself. He was sure the guy would figure out a way to get himself back home to his giant bird nest.
Blaine Anderson:
Nightbird chuckled when the other reminded him to bring his mask the next time and he nodded his head. “Yeah, I definitely won’t.” He smiled as he let his head rest against the brick wall behind him. Hearing the wind rush by again, he figured the speedster had left him alone on the rooftop. “Red?” He asked just to be sure before letting out a soft chuckle, shaking his head. Maybe the Flash wasn’t such a bad guy after all; he did save Nightbird’s life and even made him feel comfortable enough to recoup for a bit together. There was clearly an unspoken trust Nightbird had in him that he hadn’t quite realized himself.
Biting on his bottom lip, he attempted to wipe the grin from his face as he made a call to Santana and Sam. “Guys? I know, I know, I’m fine. Just..I didn’t have my mask and I can’t see to get home-- can you help?”

sal·va·tion /salˈvāSH(ə)n/ noun preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. “My touch is his temptation, his kiss is my salvation. I’m sweet, he’s wild, we're dangerous.”
Sebastian Smythe:
It didn’t take much longer after Sebastian awoke from his coma for him to get released from the hospital. There was nothing physically wrong with him and he passed any and all outpatient exams and tests with flying colors. His job was more than understanding about what had happened and agreed to let him come back whenever he was ready. Sebastian figured having been asleep for the past three weeks had had his bosses scrambling to find someone to fill his empty seat. “Don’t worry,” they told him when he’d called to inform them he was now awake. The fact that his bosses were a little too unconcerned about when he would return worried Sebastian into thinking he might not have a job to return to.
Not even a few days had passed and Sebastian found that something had changed while he was in his coma. At first the changes shocked him and he wasn’t sure what to do. He almost wanted to tell Blaine but part of him was ashamed and afraid Blaine might get scared too and run away. Instead, Sebastian closed himself off and made up excuses for his family and his friends. He quit his job as a journalist and did things to cope with his changes. For one, he was incredibly fast. Too fast to be humanly possible. Another was that he was constantly hungry; if he didn’t get sugar in him around the clock then he would feel light-headed. No matter how much he ate, however, he never gained any weight. In fact, the opposite happened and for some crazy reason he lost next to all of his body fat and gained toned muscle without ever breaking a sweat.
On days that he managed to actually keep his newfound abilities under control, he would attempt reaching out to Blaine. He would use his speed to sneak around and get things to win him over-- he surprised the boy with a vase of flowers sitting on his front step while he knew Kurt was out for the night. The morning of Valentine’s Day Blaine had told him about a sudden audition he was rushing over to and Sebastian surprised him by beating him to the audition location to give him a pep talk in person, coupled with a single red rose for luck.
“I just happened to be in the area so I rushed over when you told me where you were going,” his reason may have been suspicious but Sebastian didn’t give his friend any hints of what he’d become. “Happy Valentine’s Day, killer.”
Blaine Anderson:
It had been a little bit since Sebastian and Blaine had parted ways at the hospital and it seemed Sebastian and Blaine both had been too busy to keep up their weekly dinners. Blaine was so busy trying to make up for all of the time lost with Nightbird, trying his best to win over the city again. Thankfully they had welcomed him back with open arms and they forgave him fast even though he still had yet to catch Doctor Light. It was frustrating that such a stupid super power kept him from getting him and putting him away.
Meanwhile in his other life he was still dealing with his marital problems and the fact that the callback he’d was a dead end. He was afraid to tell Kurt that he didn’t get it, not wanting to hear the ‘I told you so’ he had building up. He missed having Sebastian so often to take his mind off of everything, but the surprises he would send or leave for him made up for their lack of seeing each other. The texts here and there made him feel better too. He felt lucky to have at least one thing and person in his life that brought a smile to his face even if it was only once in awhile lately. He figured part of Sebastian’s reasoning was also because Blaine had planned to spend Valentine’s Day with Kurt, giving him one last chance.
When February fourteenth finally arrived it started out okay, he and Kurt woke up together for the first time in a really long time and they attempted to have a nice morning together, both forcing small talk about their upcoming date that evening. It felt uncomfortable but not unbearable so he didn’t know what to expect for the night ahead. He decided he would give them and their relationship an actual shot on that day and he would stick with it until the day was over, unfortunately for him it didn’t seem that Kurt had the same mind frame because before lunch time Kurt had gotten a call from someone and he just had to go out. He left with the promise of meeting Blaine at their date that night and an air kiss that was only barely in Blaine’s direction.
With a heavy sigh of disappointment, Blaine collapsed on the couch for a bit. Around noon, his phone rang with a text message from one of his friends that he’d met at all of the auditions he’d gone to, telling him that there was a last minute call for singers for an off-broadway show. It cheered him up a little bit, after not getting another callback from his last one he had kind of fallen out of the routine of auditioning for multiple things every week, so this was a little silver lining in his day. The first thing he did was text Sebastian about it, knowing he could get positive reinforcement from him. Blaine hurried to get ready and he rushed across town to make it on time to the audition.
A wide grin pulled at his lips and his whole face lit up when he saw that Sebastian had beat him to the audition location, surprising him. “Well, hey stranger.” He said as he approached the taller, gently taking the rose from the other. A blush painted his cheeks red at the nickname rolling off of Sebastian’s tongue. He cast his gaze down with a bashful smile. “Seb,” he clicked his tongue, shaking his head. “You didn’t have to do this.” Blaine looked up at the taller, sighing happily. “Happy Valentine’s Day, handsome.” He pulled Sebastian into a tight hug.
Blaine felt so incredibly lucky to have Sebastian in his life again, after spending so many days and nights with someone who made him feel two inches tall, it was nice to be around someone who makes him feel special. “H-how did you get here so fast?” He asked whenever he pulled back from the hug, a little flabbergasted that the taller had made it there before him. “Ugh, I don’t care, I’m just so happy to see you. I’ve missed you.” He leaned up to press a kiss to Sebastian’s cheek. “Today has not started out so great and I’m very nervous for this audition so you are definitely a sight for sore eyes.” The shorter smiled sweetly at his friend before bringing the rose up to his nose, smelling it. “You here to try and talk me out of my date tonight?” He smirks slightly, raising his eyebrow.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian was glad that his friend hadn’t probed him too much in regards to how he arrived so quickly, considering it had only been minutes since he’d found out. “Oh, y’know, I just happened to be in the area and it’s Valentine’s so everyone’s selling roses. I just picked one up and rushed over.” Of course it was only half of a lie; in actuality he was at home doing nothing but he really did rush over at top speed. After much practice, Sebastian had gotten his powers under control and he was ready to swoop Blaine off of his feet at the drop of a hat. He smiled bright and wide when Blaine kissed his cheek and chuckled at his comment-- Blaine really did know him the best. “I won’t talk you out of anything but I will let you know that my schedule for today just so happens to be completely empty. So you could, for instance, happen to drop by my place for a romantic dinner or something to that effect.”
Things between Blaine and Kurt were still strained and Sebastian knew it. He was currently playing the long game, continuing to show his everlasting support for Blaine and promising to always be there for him. He was going to be the man that would pick Blaine up and piece him back together after Kurt inevitably broke his heart. The way Blaine spoke of his husband, it seemed already that his heart was breaking apart little by little. Sebastian disliked Kurt so much so that he wasn’t ashamed of practically stealing Blaine away from him.
“Just know that I’m here for you, okay? Always,” he promised. “With roses, a pick-me-up dinner whenever you need it, or if you just need a kiss for good luck on your next big audition.” With that, he leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his best friend’s lips. He pulled back with a smirky grin, aware that while there were butterflies fluttering in his tummy, he too was doing the exact same to Blaine.
They stood and smiled at each other for a moment before Sebastian announced that he was going to leave. “Anyway, you have your audition to get to and I really just wanted to stop by and wish you luck. I’m just a text or call away if you need me, so don’t hesitate. I’ll come a-runnin’.” He gave Blaine one last hug before saying goodbye, shooting his friend a wink before he walked off.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine’s breath was taken away briefly by the way Sebastian kissed him. Butterflies began swirling around inside of him and the world stopped around them for the moment as he tilted his head up and kissed him back softly, placing his hand on Sebastian’s chest and gripping his shirt gently. A slight chuckle left his lips whenever they parted and he bit his lip, looking down to hide his bashful grin. “You are such trouble.” He let go of the taller’s shirt, patting his chest to smooth it out as he smiled at the other fondly. “I will call you tonight, okay?” He promised his best friend when he announced his departure, knowing that regardless of how the night went, he would need to talk to him afterwards. He watched Sebastian walk off before checking the time and taking a deep breath. Seeing his best friend was exactly what he needed to pick him up before his audition.
He left the audition that day feeling very confident in how it went, he felt good about how he did and he felt that he had Sebastian to thank for that. On his walk home his mind wandered away from Sebastian and more towards Kurt and their upcoming Valentine’s date. He was not looking forward to it really, he was forcing himself to go out of guilt. He felt guilty that he’d given up on their relationship and that he’d kissed Sebastian so many times, even if he and Kurt weren’t exactly compatible, he didn’t deserve to be cheated on. His thoughts were interrupted when he got a text from Kurt, telling him that they needed to push their date back half an hour. The words pulled Blaine’s mood down slightly and he sighed a little frustratedly, sending Kurt a message back, agreeing to the time change. He closed his eyes and took a deep breath. “It’s okay, it’s okay. It’s not a big deal.” Blaine gave himself a small pep talk before deciding he wasn’t going to go home first- the thought of going to Sebastian’s for a bit crossed his mind for a split second but he thought that might not be the best idea. After a few moments of walking, he decided to just get coffee and that’s when his phone rang. Sam had other plans for him, letting him know of an unusual disturbance uptown.
Unfortunately Sam didn’t seem to have any more information than the fact that this was someone they hadn’t seen before and he was extremely fast. Blaine quickly disappeared off into the shadows, thankful the sun was already going down. It wasn’t that Nightbird wouldn’t go out during the day, he was just at his best during the night. He moved his way up to the top of the building, coming out of the shadows as Nightbird, effortlessly gliding from building to building. Sure, he wasn’t the fastest man alive but his speed was impressive, taking him no time to get all the way across town. Blaine didn’t know what to expect to find when he showed him to the address Sam had given him, but luckily - being a superhero - he was prepared for practically anything.
Neither he or Sam knew if this new person was some new villain they needed to add to their list to look out for, or if they were a new hero they could add to their list of allies. Either way, he was intrigued.
Sebastian Smythe:
After the two parted ways, Sebastian found himself with quite a lot of time on his hands until Blaine’s big date. It only took him seconds until he was back and home and he plopped himself on his couch, feeling very bored. Time seemed to crawl by much more slowly now that he’d acquired super speed. He decided to fill up his free time with some chores by tidying his home, organizing his library in alphabetical order by author, and then rearranging his furniture to his liking. When he finished he realized only a few moments had passed and he still had to wait next to same amount of time for Blaine go on his date.
Realizing that he looked absolutely pathetic by just waiting at home twiddling his thumbs for a guy to call him up, he decided to have some fun. An idea popped into his head and he left with his camera bag, making sure that his new special ring was on his finger. The ring, which was gold in color, was stylized with a lightning bolt. It was Sebastian’s way to stow away his costume within it. Both his costume and the ring were bestowed onto him by Professor Garrick shortly after the discovery of his powers. As he sped through the busy streets of New York, everything and everyone around him appearing to move in slow motion, he activated his ring and changed into his scarlet red costume.
Sebastian was aware that there was a little soiree going on tonight at the Metropolitan Museum of Art rooftop and it was the perfect location to lure out the so-called “Nocturnal Avenger”. Now Sebastian wasn’t about causing anyone pain but a little controlled chaos was always fun. He ran up the side of the building and when he arrived right in the middle of the party, he garnered a few gasps of surprise from the crowd. Sebastian had a way of disguising his voice by vibrating his vocal cords with his speed abilities. “Attention Met guests!” He shouted out to get everyone’s attention, “I hope you don’t mind if I crash your party with a few friends!” Just as quickly as he arrived on the scene, he dashed away. People were only just talking amongst themselves before Sebastian returned, zipping around and dropping off live penguins, flamingos, and peacocks scattered around the entire rooftop. Being relocated from the nearby zoos so suddenly caused the birds to panic, flapping their wings and running about. It’s then that people began to scream and run away, looking for the nearest exit to get the hell out of there.
“C’mon, I’m just having a little fun! Where’s your sense of adventure?!” Sebastian asked, laughing at all the panicked guests. It’s then that he moved with his super speed, setting up a camera on a tripod from a distance. Tonight was the night he was going to catch Nightbird on film. While he waited for Blaine to show up, he fixed himself a drink at the bar and took a seat in the middle of the rooftop so he was able to detect the masked man from whatever direction he arrived.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine recognized the address that Sam had given him as the Metropolitan Museum of Art and he took the shortest route he knew off the top of his head to get there, keeping an eye out below to see if he could catch any sight of a sign of who he might be dealing with. He noted people scurrying from the building’s rooftop, not necessarily scared for their lives but definitely frightened in some way. It gave him a red flag, thinking he might be dealing with a bad guy. But he wouldn’t jump to too many conclusions yet.
His eyebrow quirked with confusion when he closed in on the building, noticing a lot of different types of birds. That was definitely something new that he had never seen before. He landed on the corner of the building, hearing the gasps from people below, cheering because Nightbird had made his grant entrance. Never gets old. He smiled a little smugly to himself before taking a breath. Okay. Birds- how to handle this. Blaine had ideas going through his mind at the speed of light regarding how he would handle getting all of the birds off of the roof safely and back to where they belong- but first thing’s first. Who did this? He glanced around the roof until his eyes landed on the figure standing on the other side, clothed in red, with a look as if he were vibrating. He thought it a bit odd, but he took the step forward anyway, lowering his voice to Nightbird level.
“Birds?” He asked, shaking his head a little, holding his arms up in question. “Now I’ve been doing this for a while and I’ve seen a lot of stuff- but this,” He gives a light chuckle, taking in the sight of the figure, eyeing him up and down carefully, assessing his threat level and not really getting much yet. “This is definitely new.” He looks down to scoot along one of the flamingos that was honking by his feet. He left up his defense just in case the person turned out to have ill intentions, not wanting to let his guard down until he knew for sure there was no danger.
“Who are you, anyway?” He asked as he came to a stop mid-roof, waiting for the other to speak and make a move.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian finally had what he wanted. Just as Nightbird had arrived, he managed to snap a few pictures so that regardless of what happened next, he had what he came here for. Everything else now was just icing on the cake. Standing opposite of the man before him, wearing his stupid black and blue uniform with stylized cape, Sebastian sauntered over and laughed. “Who am I?” He repeated Nightbird’s question and chuckled. His voice came out almost distorted as he continued to vibrate both his face and vocal chords as he spoke, “Don’t you recognize me? I’m the Batman.” Sebastian crossed his arms over his chest and laughed.
“See, I just had to meet you. So I set all of this up.” He gestured to a lone penguin who was standing next to him. “I’m sorry, was this not the correct bird call?” Sebastian couldn’t identify any discerning qualities about the man in front of him; the mask and the costume were a pretty good disguise. Maybe after looking at the photos he took, Sebastian could get to the bottom of the man’s identity. “I hope you like my little gift; I’m a pretty big fan of yours, y’know.” He remarked as he took a few steps closer. It seemed the man before him was ready to jump into action should Sebastian make any sudden moves. Using his super speed, Sebastian rushed over and detached the man’s cape from his costume, wrapping it around himself. He made sure to maintain an ample distance in case Nightbird decided to attack. “Nice cape. What is this-- a synthetic tri-polymer fabric?” He noted the logo on the cape before eyeing the film built into the outside of the cape. “What is this? Some type of modified polyethylene film for reflecting light? Or maybe even absorbing light?” It was clear now that Sebastian’s up close to him that Nightbird was the real deal. He wouldn’t be surprised if his armor was made out of military-grade kevlar.
“How do I look?” He joked with the cape now draped around him, “Maybe I should run over to city hall right now and announce your new official name is Bird Boy!” For some reason Sebastian received a lot of joy from pushing this guy’s buttons.
Blaine Anderson:
When the other made the joke about his shenanigans being the right bird call, Blaine laughed softly, appreciating the humor no matter how ridiculous it was. “Bird call, that’s a good one.” He snorted, shaking his head as crossed his arms. “Alright, you wanted to meet me so you took all of the birds from Central Park and put them here.” He chuckled softly. “I really don’t mean to be rude, but I really don’t have time for fake bird calls such as this.” He motioned towards the chaos of birds squawking and honking all around him.
Blaine gasped slightly when the man in red flashed around him and suddenly was wearing his cape, his guard shaken at how vulnerable he could be to this potential bad guy. “Hey!” He narrowed his eyes, watching the other carefully now, fully on his guard. “Give that back.” His voice is low, stern and his hands ball up into tight fists. He appreciated the humor of the bird call and was flattered that someone would go through so much just to meet him but taking his cape was going too far. He needed his cape- it helped his flight abilities to be more precise and it helped shield his sensitive eyes from whatever possible light his enemies would throw at him. “Maybe,” was his reply when the other asked him about the make of his cape. “What’s it to you?” Blaine really couldn’t remember what all his cape was made from, he remembered Santana rattling off a lot of big words really fast when she handed it over to him, but all Blaine really knew is that it was tough and it was something that saved his ass many times when battling with Doctor Light thanks to that special polyethylene film.
When the man joked about his name, he thought it funny. Huh. Bird Boy. Sebastian calls me that. He shook his head out of his thoughts and held out his hand. “It’s Nightbird. That blue totally clashes with your red. So you look ridiculous.” His tone was slightly uninterested as he raised his eyebrows. “Hand it over.” Whether the new person is a bad guy or good guy he still couldn’t sense yet, but he knew regardless of which, he was going to be a big pain.
“Where’d you come from and who are you really?” He asked again, hoping to get more information on this mysterious red fellow so himself, Santana, and Sam could do some research and find out for themselves if this guy was here for good or evil.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian was pleased with himself when he’s rewarded with a chuckle from the superhero, though he doesn’t appreciate the sudden change in tone once the cape’s been stolen. “Um, excuse you but I didn’t just get these from Central Park; I also ran all the way across town and got these penguins at the Bronx Zoo. It took me a whole minute to get them rounded up. I went through all that trouble. Just for you.” Having lost interest in the cape, Sebastian let it fall to the ground and zipped past Nightbird, scaring few of the birds in the process. Their wings made flapping sounds as they perched further away from the two and Sebastian was suddenly struck with an idea. Sebastian laughed heartily and the frown on Nightbird’s face told him maybe he should at least answer one of the man’s questions. “I’m new in town; just got my powers a little while ago and I fucking love it-- haven’t thought of a kickass name yet, though. I made this suit and decided instead of being a superhero like you and those other guys, I’d have some fun with it. So here I am, here to cause a little trouble for do-gooders like you.”
Sebastian started to wind his arms up, pointing in the direction of Nightbird. Doing so with his super-speed began to create a vortex-- a strong gust of wind that was enough for Nightbird to put his guard up. The flamingos and peacocks dispersed and flew in all different directions, their honking getting quieter as they got further away. Once the birds had all flown away save for the flightless penguins, Sebastian thought it funny that the hero was now tasked with tracking down a bunch of birds. “Whoops!” He exclaimed with heavy sarcasm. With Nightbird now seemingly extremely exasperated by his shenanigans, Sebastian gave the man a shrug and laughed again. This was all just so entertaining for him. “Listen-- I like you. Well, let me reiterate: I like messing with you. So you better get used to seeing me around the city. Ciao.”
With that, Sebastian dashed off, unconcerned with what Nightbird would do next and certain there was no possible way the flying hero would be able to track him down.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine rolled his eyes when the other corrected him about where he got the birds from, though listening very carefully at how long it took him to do so. He thought it was very interesting that it took him just took him one minute to gather all of the birds and get them here not only from the Central Park Zoo but from the Bronx Zoo as well. He’d be lying if he said he wasn't slightly amused by the man’s antics but in reality this was a huge waste of his time on a day that he didn’t really need to be wasting time. When the other dropped his cape he moved swiftly to grab it, re-attaching it effortlessly. “Oh, good.” Blaine replied with sarcasm when he’s informed that this new guy is only here to irritate him and others trying to clean up the city. “I was worried you would actually be here for, y’know, good.” He was relieved, however, that he didn’t have evil intentions.
“Listen,” He began before the taller started waving his arms, causing a windy vortex around them, startling the birds and ruffling their feathers. “Wait, what are you doing?” He looked around at the birds as they began to freak out, some of them even fleeing the building’s rooftop and flying off. “You’re scaring them away!” Blaine let out a groan when he realized all of the birds that were capable of flying were gone, officially to the point of exasperation with this guy and his obnoxious behavior.
He narrowed his eyes as the man laughed. “I’m so glad you’re so entertained.” His voice dripped with annoyance as he shook his head, raising his eyebrows. “Hey! You have to-” Blaine hollered after the other as he left in a red flash. “...put them back.” There was no one left to hear those last words. His shoulders slumped as he looked down at the penguins, sighing heavily as one of them looked back up at him. He felt bad because the poor thing looked terrified. “C’mon little guy.” He scooped him, and however many he could fit comfortably up in his arms before flying off to return them.
It took him a few good hours to find all - at least almost all - of the birds and return them back to their homes. By the time he was finished, it was already past time to meet Kurt for their date. It was this moment that he wished he was the one who had the super speed and not the slightly faster than normal speed. He used his flight to get to the location quicker than he could have on foot, changing into his date clothes on the rooftop before he made his entrance. He wasn’t greeted with happiness, though. Kurt was peeved at him for being late. Fifteen minutes late. After Kurt had already pushed their date back half an hour.
Their tensions explode and they end up fighting right there at the dinner table.
“Kurt, I was only fifteen minutes late. You already pushed the time back. I’m here, can we just try, please?” He begged but Kurt was having none of it, he blamed Blaine for being the one who hadn’t been trying. He told Blaine that it was his fault they were drowning, it was his fault that their relationship died.
“I’ve been the one trying to get jobs, I’ve been the one trying to communicate with you but all you do is shut me out. How have you been trying? Why haven’t you found a job?” Blaine was fed up as well, finally calling out Kurt on things he should’ve owned up to. The shorter goes on to tell Kurt finally about the callback he hadn’t gotten and about the audition he had that afternoon and Kurt rolls his eyes, telling him he should give it up already because there is no money in auditioning. He needs a real job first. That caused Blaine to ask him again what exactly Kurt had been doing if he hadn’t found a job. He had no idea what Kurt did during the day, he assumed he would’ve been out like him, trying. But no- that’s when Kurt told him that he’d been seeing someone else. He’d been sleeping with someone else, even. That’s what he had been doing while Blaine was out trying to find a job - even before Sebastian came into the picture.
Blaine didn’t hear anything Kurt said after that, he noticed Kurt’s facial expression changed from mad to horrified. He hadn’t meant for Blaine to find out. He definitely didn’t mean to tell him on their Valentine’s date. It’s like Kurt’s whole mood shifted and suddenly he was so sorry and he just wanted him and Blaine to be happy again but Blaine didn’t hear any of it. The world around him slowed down and everything went quiet. Without saying another word, Blaine got up from the table and left. He walked out of the restaurant in a rush and as he walked the streets of New York he just got angrier and more sad, tears streaming down his face without his consent. He couldn’t believe what he had just heard. He’d been trying all of that time to make their relationship work and Kurt had given up long before Blaine had begun to. And to think he had felt guilty for kissing Sebastian- Kurt had sex with someone else. The thought made him want to vomit in the streets. He felt ashamed of himself for letting this happen- he felt ashamed that Sebastian had been right all of those years ago and he wasted so much time on Kurt when he and Sebastian could’ve been living happily ever after.
He flew around as Nightbird for a bit, taking his aggression out on a few muggers in the area, dropping them off at the police station. After an hour of that, he wasn’t feeling any better so he decided to give it up and go to the place he knew he would at least feel a little better. He flew straight to Sebastian’s place, changing himself in the shadows before reaching the door and knocking on it. When Sebastian answered the door he didn’t even give him a chance to speak before taking his face in his hands and pulling himself in to kiss Sebastian hard and passionate on the lips, needing him close. Needing the affection and comfort.
Sebastian Smythe:
After Sebastian left Nightbird to deal with the flock of birds, he went home and decided to start cooking dinner. In the event that Blaine’s date ended up going horribly awry, he wanted at least a delicious home-cooked meal for him to enjoy. If Kurt ended up turning their relationship around for the better then at least Sebastian had a delicious home-cooked meal in which to engorge himself. Sebastian had the ability to move at the speed of light but unfortunately he couldn’t make his oven do the same; while the food cooked he was capable of multitasking and got all-new decorations and dishware for his kitchen counter. His kitchen was small but that didn’t mean he couldn’t make it look nice for Valentine’s Day. The icing on the cake was a box of chocolates coupled with a single rose in a small vase. Sebastian knew that if and when Blaine decided to stop by, he would swoon over the lengths he went through. Sebastian wanted to see Kurt top what he’d put together.
With everything in order and dinner simmering to keep warm, Sebastian looked at the time. Blaine had told him what time the dinner was supposed to be and figuring in the possibility of an argument, he wondered if Blaine was almost finished with his date. If his friend didn’t decide to stop by, he knew to at least expect a call. Blaine was definitely not the type to blow him off even if everything between he and Kurt ended up patched up. He sampled some icing off of the small 8” cake he’d baked when there’s knock at the door. With Sebastian’s ears perking up at the sound, he answered the door already knowing who it is. “Hey th--” His greeting got cut off by Blaine, who’d all but tackled him into the apartment, hands on his face with their lips locked into an intense kiss. Though he was taken aback and surprised for a moment, Sebastian wrapped his arms around the smaller man’s waist, pulling him in closer.
He shut the door behind Blaine, the two shuffling into the living room as they continued their heated exchange. Sebastian could sense the urgency and desperation behind Blaine’s kiss and for a moment he wondered if his friend has been drinking. Something was clearly very wrong as this behavior was very unlike Blaine. “H-Hey,” the man managed to mumble out between kisses. When they finally break for a breath, Sebastian pulled away enough to look Blaine in the face. His smile immediately dropped when he saw the other’s red-rimmed eyes. “What… What happened?” He asked, his hands placed firmly on the smaller’s shoulders. He could feel Blaine shaking, possibly on the verge of tears or maybe even just out of anger. “What did he do to you, Blaine?”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine only kissed Sebastian harder when he felt the taller respond, following him wherever he led, wrapping his arms around his neck to pull him even closer. He was happy that instead of pushing him away and asking what was up, Sebastian kissed him back and held him close. It was what he needed in that moment. When they finally broke and Sebastian asked him what happened, Blaine sniffled, sitting back on the couch and placing the heels of his hands in his eyes as he was too ashamed to tell the taller “Seb,” He groaned, shaking his head. “He’s been having sex with someone else...for almost a year.” Saying it out loud caused him to suck in a shaky breath, the reality of it hitting him. All of the time and effort he had put in over the past months had gone completely unnoticed because Kurt’s focus was on some other guy. “I’ve been doing every thing that I can to get work and to keep our marriage afloat and he has been spending all of that time screwing some other guy.” His voice was strained and frustrated and he rubbed his face, standing up from the couch.
“I can’t believe this.” He sniffled, shaking his head and wiping his face. “He told me that he’s been seeing someone else and been sleeping with them and then all of a sudden he is so sorry and he wants us to work. Well, that ship has officially sailed.” He crossed his arms, a deep wrinkle set in his forehead and he looked at Sebastian. “I told him the callback I had that time fell through and that I went to an audition today and he told me to give up and get a real job. Like, what has he done to contribute? Nothing. I thought this whole time that he’s been trying to get a job but nope. Nope, he’s been with whoever this guy is. I’ve been working my ass off to get work to pay for our stuff just for my husband to talk down to me and tell me to give up on my dreams-- essentially telling me I’m not talented enough for this field of work and then essentially letting me know that I’m not good enough for him.” He was so upset that he was rambling now, getting more and more upset with every sentence, hot tears falling down his face, tears mixed with hurt and anger. “I’ve never been good enough for him. I left Dalton for him- I left my friends to be with him and his friends and then he left me there. And then I left everything for him yet again to come out here just to be fucking fool again.”
Blaine didn’t realize until this moment that he was practically wearing a track in Sebastian’s floor with his pacing as he shook with emotions, his hands trembling. He stopped pacing for a moment to take a deep breath, looking at Sebastian. Broken and pitiful. “I’m sorry.” He whined, feeling guilty for having his breakdown in front of his best friend while knowing how Sebastian must’ve be feeling right. “I know, I should be happy. This makes things easier for us. But I just- I didn’t expect to feel….like something is wrong with me.” His voice was a little softer. “I mean, what if I end up not being good enough for you either? What if I’m actually not good enough for this career I’ve worked so hard to get to. What if my whole life I have just been set up to fail?”
The shorter closed his eyes to take another deep breath, letting it out shakily before opening them again. “Can I please stay here?” He couldn’t stomach the thought of going back to his and Kurt’s apartment, he honestly didn’t care if he ever set foot inside of that place again. He was so done with Kurt and their life together. As far as he was concerned, it was over.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian sat quietly, watching and listening as Blaine went off on what happened tonight. He thought it best to let the other man finish than to interrupt. When he heard that Kurt had been sneaking around and sleeping with someone else, it made Sebastian’s blood boil. Though he had always thought it, he never thought anything louder and angrier than in that moment: Kurt did not deserve Blaine. He thought of the lengths Blaine had gone through, trying his best to be a doting and faithful husband and his efforts were essentially for nothing. When the shorter man started to cry, Sebastian slowly stood up and approached him, reaching his hand out to grab him. He wanted to be Blaine’s anchor.
“Blaine, there’s nothing wrong with you. Kurt’s an asshole and you don’t need him in your life.” He spoke with certainty as he looked his friend straight in the eyes. “You gave him your everything and he basically threw it all back in your face like nothing matters-- like you don’t matter. But, Blaine, you fucking matter.” Sebastian brought his friend into a tight hug. “You’re the person that matters the most to me. You’re the whole reason why I’m here doing this and-- I mean, you’re so fucking good enough. More than just ‘good enough’.” Sebastian kissed Blaine again, this time softer and careful. His hand reached up to cup the man’s face, wiping away the hot tears that fell from Blaine’s eyes with his thumb. When he pulled away from the kiss this time, he lingered close and rested his forehead against the other’s. “And of course you can stay here… I offered my place to you the first time you were here and I meant it then just as much as I mean it now. You’re always welcome here and I’ll be damned if you ever go back to that piece of shit.”
Sebastian sighed and shook his head with a slight smile on his face. “Well, this is kind of unprecedented… I had something else entirely planned for you.” The kitchen was still decorated and a delicious dinner awaited the two of them but Sebastian figured that food might not be what Blaine wanted. “Do you want to just, like, sit and talk? I made food but it’s whatever at this point--” He made a move for the kitchen to turn everything off. Maybe they could warm it up for later but Sebastian felt right now they needed alcohol more than anything.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine whined softly as Sebastian kissed him, letting his eyes close slowly and kissing him back. He could feel that the taller cared for him. He loved that he could always count on Sebastian to make him feel special and loved and wanted. Even at his lowest of lows, he could count on the other to pick him up. He listened to the words Sebastian said to him but he didn’t believe him-- he wanted to believe him because those words of reassurance, words of love, made Blaine feel so good. But he couldn’t when he felt so awful.
He was extremely thankful to Sebastian for reaffirming that Blaine could stay with him. He needed to be away from Kurt and their home for a while. If not forever. And he needed to be with Sebastian.
Blaine raised his eyebrows when Sebastian told him he had plans for them that evening. “What? What did you have planned?” He asked as he turned to follow Sebastian towards the kitchen, laying his eyes on the set up the other had for then. “Oh,” he spoke softly as he looked around the room, feeling incredibly guilty. “Sebastian you did all of this for me?” Blaine shook his head, pouting softly while a soft whine fell from his lips, looking around the room at the romantic setting. “And here I've been crying about Kurt and I totally left you here waiting for me. You went through so much trouble, I feel so bad.” He took Sebastian's hand to pull him close, looking up into his eyes and taking both of his hands in his own. “You are the greatest, you know that? Thank you for doing this. It means more than you'll ever know.” He leaned their foreheads together and taking a deep breath, Sebastian's actions that night had made a warmth curl up inside of Blaine's tummy despite the sadness he’d faced that night.
“C’mon,” he said, pulling Sebastian towards the table he had set up. “I want to do whatever you had planned. It will be much better than crying on your couch.”
Sebastian Smythe:
“No, hey, don't feel bad,” Sebastian told his friend, waving his little romantic dinner off. “I promise I barely spent any time or effort on all of this; I just kind of whipped it up. I know you've been waiting to hear about callbacks plus you had a big audition today so I figured this could be a dual celebratory-slash-Valentine's dinner.” He moved to pop the bottle of champagne that had been sitting in an ice bucket. “Y’know, any excuse to impress you with my cooking. Also any excuse to make boulangère potatoes.” After having poured two glasses of champagne for he and Blaine to toast over, he looked over the place settings and food. “We don't have to eat if you're not hungry-- I don't know if you ended up eating already or what but we could also just pig out on cake and champagne.” He clicked glasses with Blaine and smiled, “To my new roommate. I'm very honored to have you here.” Sebastian made a mental note to make a copy of his key tomorrow.
Although Blaine had insisted on going through with dinner anyway, Sebastian was smarter than that and definitely knew better. Blaine was too sad to eat and had a lot on his mind; Sebastian insisted that they just sample all the things and instead of eating dinner at the table. They snacked while relaxing on the couch, with the champagne to wash everything down. They had the TV droning on in the background as they spent the evening talking to each other instead. Now that Blaine was going to be living with him, Sebastian announced the night was to be about celebrating that and less focused on Blaine’s break-up. “You don't need to waste anymore time or feelings on that guy,” Sebastian spoke with his mouth full of cake, “He's not worth it.” Instead Sebastian and Blaine talked about other things. When Sebastian learned Blaine had unfortunately tanked his last callback, Sebastian just waved it off-- “So that one wasn't meant to be; you'll get them next time. I believe in you, Blaine. And who else knows you better than your biggest fan?”
Maybe all Blaine needed was an environment where he felt safe and wanted-- loved-- and he would kill all his auditions and get everything he deserved. That was all Sebastian wanted for Blaine.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine rolled his eyes at the mention of his callback, with the exception of his outburst moments before, he hadn’t told Sebastian about him failing yet again. He was embarrassed at how many times he’d auditioned and failed. “Well, there isn’t much to celebrate.” He happily took the glass of champagne, smiling gratefully at Sebastian. “I would love to pig out on cake and drink alcohol with you, Seb.” He agreed as their glasses clinked together. “To the best best friend a guy could ask for.” He took a generous drink of the champagne before nodding for a refill. “I really can’t thank you enough for this.”
Blaine raved about Sebastian’s food as they sampled all of the things he had made for them that night, rolling his eyes and groaning in food-pleasure. Sebastian was incredible in the kitchen and he commented that if nothing else, Seb had a career to fall back on as a chef. As they shoved cake in their faces, Blaine finally told Sebastian about his failed callback and his insides warmed when the taller was supportive rather than scolding. He scooted closer to Sebastian on the couch as they spoke, shaking his head in disbelief. It was in these moments that he felt like the biggest idiot for ever letting that man slip through his fingers. “I really don’t know what I did to deserve you. But I am so glad that that you are here.” He took a drink of his champagne before continuing. “I feel really good about the audition today, you being there before it really lifted my spirits. And who knows,” he shrugged. “Maybe you’re my good luck charm.” Blaine wikned at the taller.
Blaine felt really good in that moment, with his tummy full of cake and delicious food, the alcohol buzzing through his bloodstream, and his heart all a flutter because of Sebastian. He just looked at Sebastian for a long moment, appreciating him before leaning forward to kiss his cheek. When greeted with a grateful but puzzled look he shrugged. “I just really appreciate you.”
His ears perked up when he heard his name on the TV, turning his attention to the screen. It was a more lighthearted segment on the news and they were talking about the shenanigans he had to deal with today. Just another irritation on top of his awful night. Maybe one day he would appreciate the humor more when it came to the man in red just screwing with him - he’d be lying if the guy’s ‘bird call’ line wasn’t funny - but for now he felt it a big waste of time and a nuisance. He shook his head, rolling his eyes. “Did you hear about that? We have a new super-anti-hero-guy running around the streets now.” He commented casually as if he’d heard the news before he came over. “He was tormenting Nightbird today apparently.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian liked thinking of himself as Blaine’s good luck charm. Maybe there was some way he could tip the scales in Blaine’s favor and make it so he would be seen as most favorable for whatever it was the man auditioned for. Maybe something for his alter-ego to do while Blaine was away. “Tell you what, killer-- how about from now on, I’ll accompany you to as many of your auditions as possible. We want you to have the best chance at getting a role, right?” He nudged his friend playfully.
When the television caught Blaine’s attention, Sebastian turned up the volume so the both of them could hear the news report better. Someone on the ground had apparently caught a shot of Nightbird flying off the roof of the museum. How pathetic. “Blaine, I have to show you something.” Sebastian set everything down and hurried to his room at normal human speed. When he returned, he had a two 8x10 photos that he had printed out on his photo printer. “Blaine, I was there. It was so awesome!” Sebastian showed his friend the two photos of Nightbird, mostly in focus with ample lighting. It wasn’t an amazing photo of the masked man but it was the best anyone was able to take yet. “I was at the museum shooting photos for this party and then this guy-- this speedster-- showed up all of a sudden and he brought a lot of birds. Like he was trying to get Nightbird out of hiding and it worked. Check it out!” Sebastian was incredibly excited to show Blaine the photos he’d taken; with these photos he could sell them for a lot of money and possibly even get his foot in the door with a great newspaper company. “Maybe I can sell them to The Times or something…”
He was surprised Blaine had heard about what happened between Nightbird and the speedster, under the impression that the man had gone straight from dinner with Kurt to his place. He supposed news about superheroes and villains travelled fast throughout the city… Though he didn’t actually consider himself a villain. “I, uh, couldn’t get a picture of the other guy. He was too fast for me.”
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine raised his eyebrows when Sebastian got excited after he mentioned Nightbird, wondering what he could possible have to show him. He couldn’t help but grin at the taller when he came back, his smile and excitement were infectious. His heart jumped up into his throat when Sebastian showed him the photos of Nightbird. “Oh wow!” He gave a believable, excited act as he took the pictures from Sebastian to see them closer, internally freaking out that he may have caught onto who Nightbird really was. Sebastian was a phenomenal photographer so he wouldn’t have been surprised. Fortunately for Blaine, the pictures were just out of focus enough for his identity not to be revealed but good enough that he knew this was a big deal for Sebastian. He was also slightly concerned that if Sebastian had been hiding out there and listening to the exchange between him and the mystery man, he might’ve recognized his voice.
He had already planned previously to help out Sebastian’s journalist career by getting him some kind of Nightbird exclusive, but he would’ve had time to prepare himself and disguise himself more. He was relieved that Sebastian still had no idea and it was nice to know that the smile on the taller’s face was because of him. “Seb, that’s- that’s so great. I know how badly you’ve wanted these pictures. They are beautiful.” He smiled at the photos, shaking his head. “These are definitely gonna move you up in the business. People are gonna beg you to let them use your photos.” He encouraged Sebastian, happy to see that he is still so passionate about his photos.
Blaine wondered if Sebastian had seen much of the so-called speedster. “So no pictures of the other guy? Did you happen to catch his name or anything? I briefly heard about his event on the way to the restaurant to meet Kurt.” He made up a believable lie, pressing with hope that Sebastian happened to gather more information about this mystery man since he happened to be there when the shenanigans started. “I thought it was interesting that we have a new guy that we haven’t seen before. How did he seem when everything started? Do you think he’s evil or do you think he’s okay?” Blaine caught himself getting a little worked up over this and he cleared his throat. “I mean, y’know, it’s not a big deal. It’s just cool.”
He handed the pictures back to Sebastian, smiling at him. “Here, I don’t want my cake fingers all over your big break.” He crinkled his nose before finishing off his glass of champagne. “So when you make your millions- are we moving over to 5th Avenue?” He teased, looking up at Sebastian with a cheeky grin.
Sebastian Smythe:
Seeing Blaine geek out over Nightbird and the speedster made Sebastian laugh. Even all these years later, Blaine was still a nerd at heart. He wished that Blaine could’ve been there on the roof to witness the two super-powered beings and their snarky rapport with one another. Maybe it was better that he wasn’t so it was easier to hide his identity. Sebastian was new to the whole ‘secret-identity-thing’ so he thought it best to play it coy about the speedster. “I wasn’t able to, no-- the best I got was a blur but that’s all it was so I deleted the photo off my camera. He was being a smartass but the name I heard was, uh, ‘Batman’?” He laughed because he knew and Blaine knew that this speedster wasn’t the Batman at all. “No idea if he’s evil; he and Nightbird almost seem like enemies, though.” Sebastian knew full and well that he had given everyone-- including Nightbird-- the impression that the speedster was a bad guy who was up to no good.
Sebastian took the photos back and placed them somewhere safe before returning to the couch. After refilling Blaine’s glass of champagne, he thought to himself how he would treat himself with whatever money decided to flow in from his photos. If he kept this up, he could take pictures of Nightbird and the speedster for a continuous flow of cash. Sooner or later, he could live comfortably in a luxury condominium if he wanted. He knew Blaine was only joking but Sebastian had higher expectations for himself as a superpowered metahuman. “Yeah? I promise when we move, it’ll definitely be somewhere better than here.” Sebastian wanted to give Blaine everything he deserved, including a luxury apartment smack-dab in the middle of hoity-toity Manhattan. "Before I come into my millions of dollars, however, I think we should move your stuff into here. I want this to be just as much your place now as it is mines; I'll clear out a space in the closet and my dresser for you."
He knew that eventually he would have to come up with a name for himself. He couldn't be causing trouble through New York City without a name the entire city would remember. He wanted to be well-known like Nightbird but perhaps maybe not in exactly the same sense. Sebastian had no desire to fight crime or rid the city of evil because he didn't see the point. Evil was a constant and relentless force that would not be stopped no matter how much the superheroes like Nightbird and the folk fought back. Sebastian wasn't on the villain's side either; he just wanted to do what was best for him and now, what was best for Blaine. "Maybe they should call him 'Speedy', the Speeding Speedster," Sebastian joked. He knew in order to create a cover for himself he needed to make fun of the new guy as much as he did for Bird Boy.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine internally rolled his eyes when he's reminded of the mystery speedster's tormenting words but he laughed with Sebastian anyway because he was sure that if he hadn't been the one who wasted half of his day looking through the city for birds and flying them back to the Bronx and Central Park, he would've thought the guy's antics were hilarious. "Ah, Batman. That's funny." He listened carefully to any information Sebastian had that he might've missed but unfortunately his best friend knew less than he did. "Well, I guess we'll just have to keep an eye on this guy and see what happens." He smiled at the taller, one of his eyebrows quirking. "And since you are the hot new reporter in town, you'll be the one I come to first for all of my superhero needs." Blaine crinkled his nose.
He couldn't help but smile at Sebastian, the way he spoke of future plans as if it was just so obviously certain that Blaine was going to be there made him feel good. It was nice to feel good after such a horrible night. When the taller suggested they get his things from his and Kurt's place he shook his head. "Uh-uh, no way. I am not going back there." He crossed his arms, situating himself on the couch a little more comfortable. "I don't care what is over there; he can keep it forever. I can't," He groaned, closing his eyes and rubbing his face. "I can't even look at him right now, I'm so angry with him." The thought of being anywhere near Kurt in that moment made his stomach churn, he was too upset. He sighed, thinking for a moment before it set in that he had absolutely nothing there at Sebastian’s.
“We might have to go shopping though.” He said, chuckling softly. “I can’t wear these clothes every day for the rest of my life. And I need things like a toothbrush, etcetera.” Blaine sighed, running his fingers through his hair as he looked up at Sebastian. “I’m sorry for just barging in on your life here.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian hummed to himself when Blaine noted that they should be on the lookout for the two superpowered beings. Though he wouldn’t dare tell Blaine, he was determined to track down Nightbird and use him to his advantage. As his new alter ego, he would be able to catch up to the caped crusader and get some really nice close-up photos. “I just wish I could get an interview with the guy…” He mumbled mostly to himself, though loud enough for Blaine to hear. “I want to pick his brain and get to know the guy, y’know?” He hoped that since the two were both gifted with superpowers, perhaps they would be seeing a lot more of each other.
Hearing that Blaine had absolutely no intention of ever stepping foot into Kurt’s apartment again was music to his ears. Maybe one day Sebastian would take it upon himself to go there and retrieve any of Blaine’s possessions so the man could save himself a trip full of arguments and a pathetic ex-boyfriend. Sebastian always bested Kurt when it came to wits and after what had happened tonight there was no way the former was intending to play nice. Blaine’s lack of clothes did impose a bit of a problem, however. Though Sebastian had no problem lending out his own clothes for the man to wear, it was a no-brainer that his clothes were at least a size too big for the shorter man. “A little retail therapy to liven up your mood? Do you still love the mall as much as you did in high school? I remember that one time we went on a winter fashion shopping spree and,” he chuckled at the memory, “you were so happy when you found that obnoxious cardigan…. I think it had tiny lobsters on it or something?” Sebastian could picture a teenaged Blaine in said cardigan, grinning so giddily. “Your fashion sense had always been very cute and unique.”
A suggestive look appeared onto his face when something much more dirty popped into his head. “Or, y’know, you could just go naked and stay here.” He shrugged and pretended as if he was dead serious, “you could stay here at home and just strut around naked-- wearing only a bowtie. I promise I’ll bring you home pizza so you don't starve.
“All joking aside, I promise you're not ‘barging in on me’,” he motioned with air-quotes. “Blaine, I want you here.” He placed his hand on his friend’s leg and leaned in for a gentle kiss. “I'm always going to be your biggest fan; I love you.” Those three words always had weight whenever he said them to Blaine but this time especially so. His words almost felt loaded-- like they might turn right around and bite him in the ass. It was no secret Sebastian had always chased after Blaine but even after all this time, he was still in love with him. Sebastian never expected the other to reciprocate those feelings, knowing he was tied to Kurt. Even now, he knew that even though the two were broken up and Blaine was angry with his husband, there were still feelings there. After all, Blaine wouldn't be so upset or angry or felt so betrayed if he hadn't loved Kurt.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine raised his eyebrows as Sebastian continued on about Nightbird, it was simultaneously making him feel good and a tiny bit jealous. Even if it was silly to be jealous of yourself. A cheeky grin spread across his face and he laughed softly. “I'm sorry, do you have some sort of crush on this Nightbird fella?” The shorter teased. “Do I need to be jealous already?”
Blaine giggled again when the taller brought up his lobster sweater, remembering that day fondly when they spent time together shopping. “I love that sweater! I would love to find another like it. You know, you and Sam were the only ones who didn't hate that sweater.” He shifted on the couch more to face his best friend and he nodded his head. “I would love to go shopping with you. I think it would be fun- I just, uh,” Blaine cast his gaze downwards, feeling a little embarrassed. “I just can't really afford it right now.” He sighed heavily as a wrinkle settled in his forehead. He really should have thought about that before leaving his apartment. “I could ask my parents for money but I've been really trying to avoid doing that- they've already paid my rent three times this year.” His voice is soft and his tone ashamed.
He cracked another smile, however, when Sebastian joked about him being naked, it pulling a laugh out of him. “Oh you would just love that wouldn't you?” Blaine crinkles his nose. “But y’know, nakedness in exchange for pizza sounds like a pretty sweet deal.”
Blaine looked at Sebastian adoringly as he is reassured that he is more than welcome, his heart fluttering when the taller leans in to kiss him. He kisses him back just as gently, letting out a happy sigh when he leaned his head against the couch, still looking at Sebastian with the same look. He bit his bottom lip, letting his teeth drag slowly over it when Sebastian told him he loved him. They've always said it to each other in the way you do your friend even if they both meant it more deep down, they've even said it a few times since they met up again but Blaine felt the difference in this moment and it made him feel as if one of those broken pieces of himself found its place again. “I love you too, Seb.” Blaine took a breath before continuing, reaching over to take the other's hand. “I'm sorry it's taken me so long. I'm sorry I was such an idiot and I treated you so badly.” His voice was soft and genuine, an undertone of pleading. “I promise if you give me the chance, I won't let you down again.”
He lifted his head from the couch, taking both of Sebastian's hands then, looking into his eyes. “I know that I am going through some stuff right now. But I want you to know that I do want this. I want you. Please, please, don't ever think I don't ever again. I've been lying to myself and to Kurt since the day I met you.” He took another soft breath before sighing. “I want to do this right and I want to make sure you never, ever, feel like a rebound or like my second choice. Just because I made the wrong choice the first time. Okay?” Blaine leaned forward to rest their foreheads together. “I know you. I know how you think. Don't think it, okay?” He took Sebastian's face in his hands gently. “I care about you so much, and I'm going to prove it to you.”
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian didn’t want the other to think he was too interested in Nightbird. Though it was true that before his powers he was mostly fascinated of the masked man, now that he himself had obtained powers, it was less curious and more just to have fun. He could see himself starting a friendly little rivalry with the superhero and if anything ever got too heated or out of control then he could just disappear. Unlike Nightbird, the speedster didn’t put himself under any responsibilities and he had no duties to uphold to the people of New York City.
With a wry laugh, Sebastian looked down from Blaine’s eyes, unable to look him in the face. It wasn’t until the man took his face into his small hands that Sebastian finally locked eyes with the other. He could stare into those golden honey eyes all day even if he didn’t want to-- Blaine’s eyes were almost hypnotizing. “Okay, I believe you.” He replied with his voice quiet. He trusted Blaine with all of his heart but there was an ounce of doubt that had budded from Blaine running to him only when he needed to get away from Kurt. Even now, it almost felt like he was a second choice. As pathetic as that made him feel, he was appreciative that Blaine was finally his. Sebastian only wanted Blaine and he didn’t care that he had to essentially pick up broken pieces of him and hold him together after Kurt shattered his heart. He put those negative feelings away and listened only to Blaine, doing his best to believe in his words. He gave the shorter man a reassuring smile, his heart happy to hear those special three words parroted back to him. He could feel it down to the bones that he meant a lot to Blaine. Sebastian would stop at nothing and work every day at making him mean the most to him. Sebastian had always been fiercely jealous and possessive when it came to anything and Blaine was no exception. It would take time but eventually Kurt would be only an afterthought in Blaine’s mind.
In regards to Blaine’s lack of money, Sebastian had already figured this was the case since he’d been out pounding the pavement and looking for a decent role to provide an income. Fortunately for the man, Sebastian had found himself with lots of money thanks to Nightbird. “We can go on a shopping spree tomorrow; I’ll hit up the Times in the morning and sell those photos. So you can thank Bird Boy for your all-new wardrobe… Sound good?” He nudged his friend to let him know it was alright to spend this money. It wasn’t charity but simply a friend helping out another friend. Sebastian knew that if the roles were reversed, Blaine would have his back.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine chuckled softly to himself when Sebastian said he could thank Nightbird for his new clothing and essentials, thinking it funny. He even thanked himself inside his mind. He didn't argue, though, thinking he could just pay Sebastian back later with another glimpse of Nightbird. Maybe even an exclusive interview.
Blaine knew he was going to have to work extra hard with Sebastian and always make it known that he was there because he wanted to be. He had a lot of years and a lot of things to make up for when it came to Sebastian and their relationship, and he planned on doing his very best to do just that. He had come to the realization while on his Nightbird flight after the disaster that was dinner, that his and Kurt’s relationship was over a year ago. He didn't know what happened, he thought about their relationship when he was flying through the sky and he figured out where they went wrong. They went wrong after the first time they broke up and they forced themselves to get back together and try again. Things were never really right again after that. They pushed through and forced it and all the while Blaine was still pushing through and trying his hardest to make things work while Kurt had just given up and moved on without having the courtesy of letting Blaine in on what was happening. Blaine was definitely hurt. But he was also angry. He felt very frustrated that he had wasted so much time and energy and feelings on Kurt. Despite being hurt over the situation, he mostly felt relieved and free. Like he had just lost a thousand pounds. He knew that being rid of such a toxic relationship was going to be so much better for him in the long run.
He gave Sebastian one last gentle kiss before a yawn escaped him. “A shopping spree sounds wonderful.” He agreed with a soft smile. “We can have a fashion montage like in a movie.” He chuckled before another yawn. It finally settled in that he was tired from a long, trying day.
“Today has been a brutal one,” He gently complained, letting his limbs stretch out over the couch as another yawn escaped him. “So,” he but his lip gently, looking at the taller. “Do you want me to sleep on the couch or?” He asks with a slightly cheeky grin. Blaine already knew the answer to that but he didn't want Sebastian to get the wrong idea.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian wore a satisfied grin when it was settled that they would be going out tomorrow and getting Blaine a whole new wardrobe. He was definitely looking forward to the man modeling a bunch of different outfits for him. After all this time, he was ready to start making memories with Blaine as a couple. “I’ll bring my camera and take photos of you in all your outfits; it’ll be a whole lot of fun. And afterwards when we come home, I can set up my backdrop in the living room to take some professional-style photos. We’ll update your resume with a really hot headshot.”
When Blaine decided to stretch out on the couch, Sebastian hid no shame as he practically ogled him. He licked his lips when the hem of his shirt pulled up slightly with the stretch, exposing the tiny bit of his cute belly. “D-Do you want to sleep on the couch?” He questioned with a laugh. “You’re sleeping with me, silly-- I’ve got a queen bed.” Though he knew Blaine was only joking, even just thinking of having the man sleeping on his couch instead of his bed sent a pang of sadness through him. There was no way he would ever let Blaine sleep by himself again if he could help it. “If you really need all that space to yourself then I’ll graciously give the bed to you and I’ll be the one to sleep on the couch… your highness.” Sebastian mock-bowed, unable to mask his smile from their playful teasing. “C’mon, you can borrow one of my shirts for bed.”
After cleaning up the kitchen and putting away all the leftovers, Sebastian showed Blaine to his-- their-- bedroom. They discussed and settled on which parts of the room they would change and accommodate for Blaine moving in. Although Blaine had said nothing needed to be changed since he hadn’t want to impose, Sebastian insisted that he make Blaine feel at home as possible.
The next day, Sebastian was able to exchange the photos for a nice lump sum. He promised the editor-in-chief at The New York Times that he would bring more photos, conveniently keeping his method for capturing Nightbird a secret. While Sebastian was away, he instructed that Blaine clear out a few of the drawers in his dresser and space in the closet for all the new clothes they would buy. Sebastian even offered to buy an extra dresser to push up against the foot of the bed if they really needed it. Because Sebastian had money, he wanted to buy anything the man wanted that he couldn’t buy for himself.
When they finally made their way to the mall downtown, Sebastian let his friend lead the way to whichever store he wanted. It was obvious that although the years had passed since high school, Blaine Anderson still had a very specific taste in clothing. He watched and commented positively whenever Blaine showed him any clothing he wanted to bring to the fitting room. Sebastian finally sat down in front of the door to one of the fitting rooms, getting his camera ready to take photos. These were mostly for fun so Sebastian didn’t bring any extras for over-the-top photos. “Now, remember to pose, killer.” He winked at Blaine before the man disappeared behind the door to try on his first outfit.
Blaine Anderson:
Blaine chuckled softly when Sebastian informed him that he would definitely be sleeping in his bed with him. "Well, I just wanted to be polite." He said with a smile as he got up from the couch. He laughed again when Sebastian bowed to him and called him 'your highness', crinkling his nose. "No, no, kind sir. I do require cuddling to sleep." Blaine helped Sebastian in the kitchen before he looped his arm through Sebastian's and allowed him to escort him to their room where he stripped down to his boxers, slipping on one of Sebastian's shirts.
As they discussed him moving in and all of the things Sebastian wanted to do to make him feel like he was welcome and home, Blaine felt like he actually belonged there and he slept peacefully that night for the first time in a while.
The next day while Sebastian was out looking for the highest bidder to sell his photos to, Blaine took his time getting ready for their day and going through a few of Sebastian's dresser drawers, moving some things around to make room for his things. Once he had a few empty drawers ready for him to fill with his new clothes later on that night. He took that time to get to know his new home a little, and to be a little nosey. He looked around Sebastian's bedroom, running his fingers along the dresser as he looked at the couple of pictures Sebastian had framed. He smiled to himself and he picked up one of them. It was picture of Sebastian's family, he assumed it was recent judging by how old Sloane was in the photo. It made him happy to see the family even if was just in photo form- he and the Smythe family had always gotten along very well and he always felt so welcome in their home. Just like he did there in Sebastian’s apartment. Thinking about all of the signs-- the bright, flashing neon signs-- that had always pointed to his inevitable fate of being with Sebastian, he felt stupid.
With a soft sigh, he placed this frame down gently and he looked down at the wedding band around his finger. He thought about Kurt and Sebastian both and how they made him feel. They both made him feel very differently. When he was with Kurt he felt suffocated, stifled, and alone and when he was Sebastian it was the complete opposite. Sebastian made him feel warm and loved- Sebastian made him feel seen and like he could be himself. He hadn’t felt that way in years and the previous night had just solidified that it was time for him to officially give up on Kurt and move on. He closed his eyes for a moment and took a breath before slipping the ring off of his finger, shoving it in his back pocket with his phone -which he had silenced because Kurt had not stopped trying to call him and text him - he would figure out what to do with it, and his future ex-husband, later.
He helped himself to one of Sebastian's shirts, one of his tighter ones so it would fit him okay and to some of Sebastian's hair gel to only loosely style his hair so it wasn’t obnoxiously out of place. Blaine was very happy to see Sebastian later that day when they met up and he enjoyed walking through the mall with the taller as they talked, he was happy to hear that Sebastian had gotten a very nice chunk of change for the Nightbird photos. He was honestly surprised at the amount and he could only imagine how much he could get for pictures that were even clearer. Maybe if he kept that up for him he could get Sebastian into a nicer apartment and maybe even help him get that dream job he'd always wanted.
When he spotted one of his favorite stores he gave a little excited gasp and pulled Sebastian in with him. Blaine was good at a lot of things and shopping was one of them. First, he went through all of the clothing racks, picking all of the things that caught his eye, putting together multiple outfits and occasionally asking Sebastian's opinion here and there on articles of clothing. When it came to shopping for clothes Blaine had an eye for it and he never tried on an incomplete outfit- meaning when he liked something he found the shoes and in some cases the bowtie to match before he even tried it on. Once he was satisfied with his choices they headed for the dressing rooms, he giggled softly to himself when Sebastian reminded him to pose and shot him that wink that made him go weak in the knees. He quickly threw on one of the outfits and came strutting out in a pair of navy blue pants with little white anchors sprinkled on them, a royal blue button up with an orange sweater pulled over it, finished off with a blue and white checkered bowtie and some blue suede shoes he strikes a few poses for Sebastian, giggling almost shyly at first. “What do you think?” He asked as he gave a little spin, smiling at the other.
He went on to try the other outfits, all matching and completely loud. One shirt looked like a pack of crayons had melted over his shoulders, one outfit made him look like a taxi cab, and one of the bowties he’d chosen had flamingos on them. Blaine definitely had a very special and unique style and not a lot of people got it, but Sebastian always helped made him feel confident even if his outfits were silly sometimes, and boy did he know they were silly. That’s why he liked them. With every outfit he tried on he came out to show Sebastian and he posed for him, he modeled the clothes with confidence. Blaine gave the other silly poses - like pretending to hail a cab in his taxi outfit, then pretending to actually be a cab - serious, model poses, happy poses, all of them. He even danced around to the music coming from the speakers throughout the store, singing to the songs playing.
Sebastian Smythe:
It was a delight to see Blaine in one of his own shirts; it gave Sebastian the impression that they were an actual couple that shared clothes. Though he knew Blaine needed new clothes of his own, a more selfish part of him wished that the man could just continue borrowing clothes from him.
When Blaine disappeared to try on his first outfit, Sebastian had his camera all set up, ready and waiting to snap the first pictures like the retail store dressing room was a high-stakes fashion runway. Sebastian was thankful for digital cameras as he found himself snapping dozens of photos of Blaine doing all different sorts of poses. It was plain for Sebastian to see that the man still retained his very preppy style of clothing from high school, complete with bow ties, collared button downs, with the twist of unusual patterns. When Blaine did a little twirl and a pose, Sebastian snapped a few photos and gave the man a thumbs-up. “Looking good, killer. Super sexy.” He loved the way Blaine looked so comfortable in his clothes both physically and emotionally. Like every stereotypical gay man, Blaine had his own sense of fashion that made an impression whenever he simply walked down the street. It was very different from Sebastian’s own style but he appreciated it on Blaine.
Halfway through Blaine’s little modeling session, Sebastian thought it a good idea to pull out his phone and begin shooting a little video. Though the photos would do a fine job showcasing Blaine’s sexiness and playful side, Sebastian thought that a video would capture the man’s unbridled joy. He approached Blaine and turned the phone camera around so they were both i in the shot, dancing together. “See this guy? Future famous person, right here,” Sebastian spoke into the camera before ducking out to give Blaine the spotlight in the video.
Every outfit and pose or dance had Sebastian laughing, grinning ear to ear. He was having so much fun with Blaine that time and everyone else around was unknown to them. It was peculiar feeling but Sebastian loved that the other could make him feel that way-- not even his newly found super powers could that for him. By the time they were finished trying on all the outfits Blaine had picked out, Sebastian ordered a retail worker to round it all up and take it to the cashier’s. “We’re taking all of it,” he told Blaine, his tone adamant and certain. “Including the shoes and whatnot, too.” Sebastian was never the type to really look at price tags whenever he bought himself anything-- he had the money to grant him such luxury-- so when the grand total came out to more than what he had made from the Nightbird photos, he pulled out his credit card, unfazed.
“Only the best for my man,” Sebastian declared in a cheeky tone, his hand wrapped around Blaine’s waist while he carried the bags with his free hand. He felt a buzzing vibration coming from Blaine’s pants and realized it was the other man’s phone, probably ringing. “Blaine, your pho--” He pulled it out to hand to the man but stopped in his tracks when he realized what he saw on the screen. Blaine had dozens upon dozens of missed calls and unread messages, all from Kurt. “Oh.” His smiles faltered but he caught himself from frowning, reluctantly surrendering the phone to its rightful owner. “Are you… Are you going to call him back?” Just as he’d asked, the phone buzzed again with another phone call from Kurt. “Maybe you ought to answer it.”
Suddenly in the moment the reality of everything came crashing down on top of Sebastian. He wasn’t really Blaine’s boyfriend-- not yet, anyway. The man was still married to Kurt and it was very clear that Kurt had no intentions of letting go of Blaine without a good fight. Sebastian motioned away, gesturing that he would go sit and wait closeby with the newly acquired clothes while Blaine spoke on the phone. It was a conversation he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear but he still wanted to be nearby in case it got ugly. Maybe if Blaine was distracted, he could dash over to Kurt’s apartment as the speedster and steal his phone. At least then Kurt would leave Blaine alone for a little while.
Blaine Anderson:
When Blaine noticed that Sebastian was filming him, he giggled to himself and he began to show off a bit more for the camera, even pulling out some old Warbler moves for the taller when Sebastian took a step back to give him the spotlight. After a moment or two he even pulled him back to join him for a few steps. He was having so much fun shopping and dancing with Sebastian that he’d almost completely forgotten about the things he was dealing with behind the scenes with Kurt. He loved how Sebastian could just take him away and make it seem like they were the only two people in the entire world and nothing else mattered. It was exactly what Blaine had needed after how trying the day before had been. He danced with the taller and laughed with him, taking his phone at one point and snapping a few pictures of the both of them while they fooled around. He felt good when he tried on the clothes and Sebastian complimented him, he loved the way that Sebastian made him feel. He definitely did a nice job of making Blaine’s confidence level rise.
When they were finally done shopping and Sebastian told the retail worker to wrap up all of the outfits he had put together -including some lounging and sleepwear - Blaine felt spoiled. He stood there next to the taller as they waited to pay, slipping his arm around Sebastian’s and looking up at him with a smile. “Thank you for this, Seb.” He said, leaning his head on his shoulder and letting out a happy sigh. “I really appreciate this.”
Butterflies fluttered up around his tummy when Sebastian’s arm snaked around his waist and the words ‘my man’ rolled off his tongue effortlessly- he liked the way that sounded. Blaine liked the thought of being Sebastian’s man. “Your man, huh?” He asked with a slight grin and a quirk of his eyebrow. “I like the way that sounds.” His smile fell when he saw the look on Sebastian’s face change to one of disappointment when he pulled Blaine’s phone out of his pocket. “What’s-” Blaine began to speak but before he could finish he noticed why. Kurt had been blowing up his phone all morning and it looked as if he hadn’t stopped well into the afternoon. Blaine rolled his eyes and let out a heavy sigh as he took his phone from Sebastian. “I’m sorry.” He said, a deep wrinkle setting in his forehead. Frowned when the other walked away from him, taking half of a step towards him automatically before stopping and looking down at his phone. Blaine was so mad at Kurt already and it only made him even more so that he had to go and spoil the afternoon he was having with Sebastian.
Blaine glanced up at Sebastian before looking at his phone again, huffing and shaking his head. He tapped the button to reject the call as he went after Sebastian, turning his phone completely off, refusing to succumb to whatever drama Kurt was trying to bring him into. “Hey-” His voice was soft when he reached Sebastian, placing his hand on his arm to turn the taller to face him. “No, I’m...I’m not going to talk to him. You and I are spending the day together. His drama can wait.” Blaine said with a confident nod, shoving his phone into his pocket. “I don’t care to hear whatever he has to say.” And it was true- he really didn’t. He didn’t want to talk about what they were going through or whoever Kurt was seeing or what they were going to do. Blaine wanted to ignore it and have at least one day without all of that negative energy.
Blaine took a soft breath as he slipped his arm around Sebastian’s, leaning up to kiss his cheek before giving him a reassuring smile.“C’mon, let’s go get food or something. I’m starving after all of that dancing.” He knew he had to deal with Kurt sooner or later but it wasn’t going to be that soon.
Sebastian Smythe:
Sebastian had taken a step away to allow Blaine privacy but it’d only been a moment when he felt the warm touch of Blaine’s hand against his arm. Turning around immediately to give the man his full attention, the response garnered a genuine and reassured smile from Sebastian. For once, it felt like he was being put in front of Kurt-- that he was now the priority of Blaine’s life. He hoped that this feeling would soon become regular. His smile only widened when Blaine looped his arm with his, the kiss leaving the feeling of electricity running down his back.
“You know, I’m really thankful for you,” Sebastian mentioned as they made their way to the food court. “I know these clothes feel like a huge gesture and you’ll feel indebted to me or whatever but, really-- You don’t have to feel that. You do more for me than you know.” There was a moment between them where Sebastian could feel he’d filled the air with something more meaningful and sincere than their usual playfulness. It was different from their usual quirkiness or silly moments they shared together. The feeling caused Sebastian to chuckle breathily to himself and shake his head, needing to physically shake himself from the moment. “Any-anyway, I just wanted you to know. I’m having a great time with you.”
The two eventually arrived at the food court and Sebastian engorged himself on a delicious spread of junk food and sugary treats, even coaxing Blaine to get whatever it was his heart and taste buds desired. Though they continued to have fun with each other, the feeling from earlier still weighed itself heavy in Sebastian’s chest. He always knew he had a soft spot for Blaine and that he was “the one that got away” but having him around and very likely becoming a permanent part of his life gave him a brand new feeling he hadn’t experienced before. It was in his nature to ignore it or file it away to be addressed another time, so he and Blaine continued on their day of fun without delving too much into that conversation.
At the end of the day, both their hands were full of shopping bags filled with outfits and even a few knick knacks they had come across on their little mall adventure. Sebastian helped Blaine move into his bedroom and they filled the empty spaces in the drawers and closets with Blaine’s new clothes and Sebastian even made space for things that would help Blaine feel more at home. Now Sebastian’s home was filled with lots of things that belonged to Blaine and before he went to sleep that night, seeing Blaine’s new toothbrush at the bathroom sink brought a smile to Sebastian’s face. They ate together, they lived together, and they went to sleep together. It was a life that Sebastian would definitely get used to. The thought of the rest of their days being like this kept his goofy smile going even as they both fell asleep in each other’s arms that night.
