Emrys knocked on the door and started thinking about some witty remark to make when he opened the door.
Well. If. It was late enough he might be asleep.
The door swung open before Emrys thought of their joke. They opened their mouth anyway, in a final vain attempt to call for the words, but what happened instead was their knees buckled and they pitched forward.
Nightcrawler caught him, quickly supporting his weight. “Emrys?” he said, bewildered.
“Sorry,” they breathed. “Didn’t… um. I couldn’t think of anywhere else to go.”
Nightcrawler helped him inside, frowning at their bloodied shirt. “What happened?”
“I… uh…” Emrys shrugged and then regretted it, wincing at the pain. He adjusted the haphazard bandages and said, “Magneto said we had to deal with our squabbling ourselves. Angel went overboard. But it won’t stop bleeding. I don’t know how to fix it.”
“Lay down for a moment,” Nightcrawler said, lowering them to the ground. Emrys stared at the ceiling and listened to Nightcrawler walk back to the door, and then a short pause.
“Emrys,” he said carefully, “did you leave a trail of blood following you?”
“No,” they said. “Of course not. I was invisible.”
Another pause. And then, rather patiently, Nightcrawler said, “I thought that once it stops touching you, it wouldn’t be invisible.”
The words tilted around in Emrys’s head for a moment before suddenly he sat up, gasped in pain from the movement, and said urgently, “I think I left a trail of blood to your door.”
Nightcrawler, silhouetted by moonlight, nodded. “Okay. We are going to leave.” Before Emrys could process that, he had hooked one arm under their knees and another under their back. He hoisted him in the air, bridal-style. “Close your eyes.”
Emrys made a kind of grumbling sound, and then closed his eyes. He was surprised to notice he was still used to the feeling of Kurt’s teleportation. His head still spun, but when they stopped, the nausea faded quickly.
“What the fuck!” an unfamiliar woman shrieked, and Emrys forced their eyes open.
“Hello, Cecilia,” Nightcrawler said.
The woman was in her pajamas, with a silk bonnet. Nightcrawler put Emrys back on his feet, with one arm wrapped around him for support. Emrys didn’t think he was that injured, but given how his head spun when he was upright, he was somewhat thankful for the support.
“It is midnight,” she deadpanned. “I was going to bed. I don’t even work for you people anymore—”
“—I need this as a favor,” Nightcrawler interrupted. “Please.”
Cecilia pursed her lips and said, “Is this not a wanted criminal?”
Emrys laughed. “Yes.”
“Kurt, what are you thinking?”
“It’s complicated,” Nightcrawler said, and Cecilia raised her eyebrows. “Cecilia.”
They exchanged a look that Emrys couldn’t read, half because they couldn’t angle themselves to see Nightcrawler’s voice, and suddenly Cecilia sighed and turned on her heel. She waved a hand and said, “Clear off the dining room table and put them on it. I’m assuming we need stitches.”
