               the paints had been set out for the two of them.     she had sent everyone out of the house,     including rhys.      she hadn’t wanted to bring nyx to the gallery just yet.     afraid it would be too temping to touch everything.     so she had prepared the living room for the two of them and their paints.         “     mama’s ready now  !      ”        she calls out,     voice sweet and calm.      trying to glamour her excitement,      the hope that he would love it as much as she did herself.        “     are you ready  ?     ”        she smiles at her son when he appears.       “     your father will be thrilled.     ”       whatever they ended up painting would be gifted to him for this birthday.

        it almost felt skin crawling, like something was trying to burst free from underneath, something screaming and shrieking to be shown the door. being around him was torture. he was the embodiment of everything that had happened. this perfect being meant to usher in a new and better world for the night court, for every court, as far as most were concerned. but for freya? for her father? he was a reminder of everything that had gone wrong for her father. the reason as to why her life had gone the way it had.    “ you know you’re not a high lord yet, right? “    one eyebrow quirked upwards as she leaned against the door frame watching him from a distance, her jaw set tightly.    “ your mother and father grooming you to take over in what.... a hundred years or so? maybe a little more, a little less? “    a small grin lifted the corner of her lips as she pushed away from the frame, walking into the room.    “ heard about their little bargain they made before you came along. one goes, and so does the other. how does that feel? a little selfish, don’t you think? “

      𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐂𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐌𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐍𝐓 𝐍𝐘𝐗 began to grow in his mate's womb, a newfound sense of ever lingering  FEAR  settled in Rhys. No, it's not about fear but more about an  APPREHENSION,  always lurking somewhere, regardless of how he's not consciously acknowledging it all the time. But it does  CREEP  about, trickling through the cracks to steer his choices down paths he might not have treaded previously. That little one he'd seen through Feyre's thoughts even before he was conceived, has grown into a male that the High Lord and father cannot be any more  PROUD  of. Yet, the years do not diminish the worry. His family, his people, his  HOME—Always willingly carrying the weight of them all upon his shoulders with a stubbornness that makes him  STRUGGLE  to share those responsibilities... Because he's not alone. Decades after those fifty years trapped, finding his mate, bringing  PEACE—And it still sometimes feels like a  DREAM.

As a little boy, Rhysand remembers how Nyx would sometimes steal his shirts, wanting to be just like his father.  GROWING,  the older male witnessed how his son took after him in ways he wished Feyre's personality would have dominated; and it's why he can see through his father's antics. When  OVERWHELMED,  the Lord of Night pours all of his attention and focus into those he cherishes most, if only to make certain none of them are feeling as he does. It takes true effort to not let that innate  SELF-SACRIFICING  urge to win but before it could even have a chance to try, here his own son is speaking words that drape over him like a soothing blanket. A  REMINDER  that his boy is not some dream and that his nightmares remain in the world of slumber, to haunt his sleep only when stress and  EXHAUSTION  have momentarily eclipsed the calm that his family's presence brings.

Inhaling deeply through his nostrils, visible relief washes over his features and even the silver stars of his violet eyes flicker with that  WARMTH.  ❝ I know, ❞ Rhys says, standing from the desk to walk around it and closer to his son. He stands in front of Nyx with a smile that so few get to witness, because of how rare it is to actually  SEE  the wholehearted emotion written on his face. ❝ And I know you'll make me proud. But I'm still your father. ❞ He adds, voice holding a  TENDERNESS  in the way his words were serious. Both of his hands perch atop his heir’s shoulders with a firm and yet affectionate grip as a smirk tugs the edge of his mouth. ❝ Your old dad will always worry—Not even your mother can stop that from happening. ❞

It’s only a couple of times a year that her alliance with his parents court brings her here, a highlight to see him all the same, this little creature who has steadily become as much of her family as though actual blood. And each time she comes to visit, she can’t resist absolutely spoiling him, not ready just yet for children of her own ( too many scars left from years of war ) but more than happy to dote on him.

Doubling over with that small weight on her back, now Queen of Terrasen doesn’t miss the smile from her watching husband, even as she guides the toddler, almost a little boy now, over her shoulder and into her waiting arms. Upside down as he is, spinning lightly amidst Feyre’s gentle admonishments and apologies for the fact she’s been in their house for all of literal moments before she’d been so aggressively tackled by a body far too small to do any damage.

“This can’t be my favourite nephew, can it? He’s too big!”

Her entire face is lit with enjoyment as Aelin falls to her knees now – careful to scoop him upright in her arms as her fingertip rises to bop at his nose, placing him to stand before her with a laugh. Genuine adoration is there, and she thanks whatever creature has taken place of the gods that she’s found a second home here.

When nesta is a mother, what is her favorite and least favorite things about motherhood?

     nesta’s favorite thing about motherhood is the unconditional love that comes from having a baby. knowing that her baby will always love her even if she screws up or isn’t perfect. coming into this world her baby knows nothing of the things she has done, there’s no judgment, no worry of having to be a certain way to get approval. there’s just pure love and the knowledge that her baby sees her and needs her as only her mother. and nesta has nothing but unconditional love when it comes to her children, she’ll never judge them or put pressure on them, never will she force them to be a certain way. she will be the complete opposite of her mother and will make sure every one of her children feels loved all the time, that they each know she’ll be there for them no matter what. even if the world seems against them they’ll always know their mother is on their side. nesta shows her love in countless ways, but reading especially. she’ll be reading to them before they’re even out of her womb because babies can hear your voice the most prominently and it becomes a nightly routine.

     i have this headcanon in my head that she asks the house if it can somehow give her the book of fairy tales she used to read constantly as a child and it’s able to and it’s that book specifically that she reads to her children all the time. along with human books and fae books she tells them her own stories, whether they are made up or real ones about her and cassian, her and her sisters, or her and the valkyries. as her kids get older she incorporates them into the stories and they absolutely love it. she loves curling up with them, snuggling together, and spending that time together. she makes sure she does it every night and afterwards she always gives them a kiss goodnight, says ‘i love you,’ and tucks them in.

     her least favorite thing about motherhood is having to let them go at some point. there will come a time when they’re older and don’t need her as much, they’ll want to be independent, go on their own adventures and create their own stories. the realization that she cannot protect her children forever dawns on her as she gets closer and closer to the birth date. when she’s pregnant they’re safe from the world and its horrors. she’s witnessed firsthand some of prythian’s most vicious creatures. knowing what lurks in their world and the likelihood of them encountering some of those creatures later in life gives her some anxiety. especially with the stories cassian tells her about his younger years and the horrors he’s faced. plus, knowing how casual and reckless cassian can be when it comes to dealing with a dangerous situation, she knows at least one of their daughters will end up inheriting that trait from their dad.

     i imagine her being very protective of her children, especially when they’re young. if, for whatever reason, they had to go to illyria and had to bring their child she would either be constantly holding her child or her child would be behind her leg with nesta’s hand always on them. if anyone dares says anything about her child she’’ll give them a look that promises to burn them to ash. honestly, she wouldn’t like any of her daughters in illyria knowing how they treat females there and knowing what they do to their wings.

         there's something constricting her airways, she can feel it, like an invisible hand twisting and holding tighter with each passing breath, with every moment that went by. the truth was a hard pill to swallow, especially when it contradicted almost everything she'd been told. but knowing now.....knowing even the smallest amount of what her father had done, of what he had put them through, her stomach was turning. she could feel the corners of her eyes pricking with tears but she refused to show weakness, especially in front of him. especially him. her breathing was uneven, and for the first time she could hear him clearly and understood that he was just trying to help. not that she wanted it. typical of him, typical of the perfect nyx to swoop in right at the opportune moment. " i am breathing! " she snapped back at him before attempting to take a deep breath, her throat burning as she tried, closing in as she attempted another one. was this a panic attack? she'd had them when she was younger after her mother had passed, but they had just....subsided, died out as she'd gotten older. but now? her hand reached out without warning, gripping nyx's arm in an attempt to steady herself as her eyes closed, another shaky breath being taken in slowly. " i think i'm.....i think....i'm having a....panic attack...." hadn't he tried to get her to take a deep breath? hadn't he just been nice enough to try and prevent this very thing? damn him, damn him and his caring personality.

       boredom echoes from her lips. sigh followed by sigh. annoyance more so at the fact her brother was not paying enough attention to her. preoccupied with something else, yet the thought crosses her mind of what would be more important than his little sister wanting to spend time with him. a huff, followed by a small spark of starlight emanates from her her hand. a closed delicate fist shuts out the light, while the other hand lifts a wad of paper that is tossed in his direction.     ❛ right on target. ❜   a smug tone laces her voice as the paper lands it’s mark at the side of nyx’s head. another piece is wadded into a ball before it’s sent like a projectile toward her older brother for a second time.     ❛ pay attention to me. i’m bored, and you don’t seem to be doing anything important anyway. ❜

               the news had just settled in her.     her son would not be the new high lord of the nightcourt.      surprised when a little part of her was relieved.     relieved that nyx would not have to live under the pressure rhys had his entire life,     but at the same time,     she had seen that look in his eyes.     it haunted her,     set off an ache in her heart.     his unhappiness would be her undoing.

               “     can i come in  ?     ”        she whispers as her knuckle brushes the door to his bedroom.      she had told rhys that she would take care of this,     or try to.      she would tell him they were proud of him no matter what,      hold him close if he let her.      “     it’s just me     -     i brought a mug of hot cocoa.     ”
