[Review] La Mulana 2 (PC)
The perfect sequel.
021: Rose and Camellia
Known for their work on La-Mulana, NIGORO initially built up their name in the early indie games boom with a series of Flash games. Rose and Camelia remains an early classic of the era, a Punch-Out style game of patterns and personalities, filtered through the aesthetics of early shojo classics.
After her husband’s untimely death, Reiko, a low class woman marrying into the prestigious Tsubakikoji family, must take on his family to take her rightful place within the household. Which of course involves engaging in slap fights with the women of the family.
Japanese independent studio NIGORO, of 'La-Mulana' fame, is bringing its 2007 flash game sensation Bara to Tsubaki (Rose and Camellia) to the Nintendo Switch, currently playable at Tokyo Game Show. The game tells the story of a woman of humble origins, the main character Reiko, who marries into a prestigious noble family. After the death of her husband, the women in the Tsubakikoji family begin to torment Reiko, leaving her little choice than to stand her ground by engaging them in the time-honored tradition of white gloves off, face-slapping duels - all peformed to the sound of the most blissful baroque music. The port makes use of the JoyCon technology to recreate the swinging motion of the arm, containing tree additional episodes in addition to that of the original flash game.
Surely one of the wittiest and most original game concepts to come out in recent years, gifted with a sense of humour and ridicule that is quintessentially Japanese. It suggests a hilarious twist of the classic Nintendo R&D3 game Punch-Out!! whose polemic vertent may be more than Western audiences can stomach. I doubt it will ever see the light of day outside the land of cherry blossoms.
