Household 28* - Frederick and Nikki Lawson

Frederick and Nikki have been anxiously awaiting the birth of their first child.

It's time! Nikki is going into labour.

"Are we prepared for this?" Frederick exclaimed.

"Too late now. Ooooooowwwww," replied Nikki.

The labour was over faster than you might think, and Nikki was thrilled to hold baby Knox in her arms.

Frederick was immediately involved, holding his son and giving Nikki a chance to recover.

Household 28 - It's the little things

It wasn't about to get easier. Nikki and Frederick had a lot of challenges, big and small, they continued to have to face.

Like when Nikki realized the fridge was totally empty and everyone was starving.

Frederick took Knox in hand and made sure he was fed with the little that remained.

Nikki ran to the store - they couldn't afford the fee for delivery. It was a quick trip, making Nikki sad she didn't have time to enjoy the outing.

Once Nikki got home, Frederick started to prepare dinner.

Nikki put Knox to bed, while Frederick concentrated on the meal. He managed to burn it anyway.

Exhausted and ready to go to bed as soon as they were finished, Nikki and Frederick smiled as they recounted their days and shared in each other's joys.

Household 28 - Knox learns to walk

Nikki might be struggling at work, neglecting the house, and always in her PJs, but she is taking care of her son

Whether helping him figure out how to use the potty or teaching him how to walk, this mama is crushing it.

"Right foot, left foot. That's right, buddy."

"I'm going to let go now, you can do it."

"No, Mama."

"Sure you can. I'm right here. Let's just try for one step."

"You did it! I got you. Wow, you did it. I'm so proud."

After all that effort, Knox slept very well that night.

Household 28 - Toddler challenges

Raising Knox presented many challenges, and as much as Frederick tried, it was always harder on Nikki.

To judge by how well Knox was doing, Frederick and Nikki were knocking it out of the park. Their son was happy and thriving.

But Nikki wasn't. It was common to see her scarf down a snack still in her PJs, or feed herself with the leftovers from the healthy food she served Knox.

It didn't happen often, but lately she was so exhausted that she didn't rouse quickly when Knox woke in the night.

Luckily Frederick was able to respond and calm their son.

Nikki ended up oversleeping the next day, and missing work. They really could not afford to make that a habit.

Household 28 - Quality time as a couple

Nikki and Frederick adore their son, Knox, but do try to find time to enjoy being a couple.

Knox was getting bigger, learning to use the potty and actually sleeping at night. It didn't make things easy, but it did make them a little easier.

When Frederick got home from work, and before Nikki got dressed for her own shift, the pair tried to get in some quality time.

Nikki adored her husband. They had had a rocky period, but that was well behind them. They were a team on the adventure of parenthood and they liked each other a lot.

Snuggles were an absolute necessity, even if they didn't have time or energy for anything more intimate.

Snuggles were also important for their son, even when he still woke up in the middle of the night. Indeed, especially when he woke and needed to be soothed back to sleep.

Household 28 - Doing it all

With Nikki and Frederick both working and Knox needing so much more, the family started to struggle to do it all.

Sometimes they missed a proper meal...or getting out of their PJs.

Cleaning was left to when it was absolutely necessary.

Sometimes happening after it was absolutely necessary.

Bathing didn't happen as frequently as it should.

But Knox was happy and learning his skills, and that was what mattered most.

Household 28 - Knox becomes a toddler

It was time to celebrate Knox's first birthday.

Nikki couldn't believe how quickly a year passed. She was back to work. She and Frederick worked their schedules so someone was always home as they couldn't afford care.

Now that he was older, he was actually sleeping a bit. Nikki was still pretty exhausted because now he needed even more love and attention to learn new skills.

Still, she loved him more than anything. He was absolutely adorable.

Frederick was glad to care for his son more often. He only regretted that it made him less likely to earn a promotion.

Knox felt loved by his parents and excited to explore all the new things he could do now that he was a toddler.

Household 28 - Fayna isn't doing well.

Fayna was over often, since Knox was born, and Nikki really appreciated her help. Still, it was obvious that not all was alright with Fayna.

"How's work going?" Nikki asked. Fayna has recently started working at a school.

"It's great. I love being around children so much. I hope I will be a mom someday, just like you."

Their neighbour, Molly, was visiting with her nephew Gerry. She wasn't the biggest fan of Fayna, who was dating her brother Shawn.

"How is your father doing?" Molly asked Fayna and Frederick.

"Did you watch the game last night?" Fayna said next. No one was sure if she changed the subject as she found it too painful to talk about her father's heart attack or if she was being rude to Molly.

When the group went upstairs to play a board game, Fayna stepped away from the table seeming to be sick.

She then proceeded to play with a sack of flour as if it was baby Knox. Molly and Gerry were the only two witnesses to this bizarre behavior as Nikki and Frederick were fetching their son from his nap.
