Strange, isn't it? Meanwhile, here in NY today it was 60 degrees.

Yes - it seems like the storm is going around where I live - it’s super weird

See, the storm is around where I am.  Weird.  

It’s also been unusually warm this winter -- like the opposite of polar vortex-ness of last year.  I don’t mind cause I like it warmer, but let’s not pretend it’s not climate change.

I made it through 2 seasons I think of Jane the Virgin and then got bored. Have done multiple rewatches of The West Wing. Alias I own but only watched when it was airing. I forget how many season of GB I watched while airing. Not all of them for sure.

What I’ve seen of JtV has been so much fun; I’d really like to get back into it (but I’ve also been spoiled for parts of it too). West Wing just feels like it’ll take so much to watch - I tend to gravitate towards more passive viewing these days.

Jane the Virgin is great. I haven't watched the final season yet. I'll re-watch the series on Netflix first.

I’d say let’s do a group re-watch but I’m also really bad with those.

Aubergine (the color) I don't know why this totally random word just popped into my mind.

“Oh my god, I can’t do this.” Blaine groans as he enters the kitchen, placing the glasses he’s holding on the counter before dramatically leaning his forehead on the counter as well.

Kurt rolls his eyes as he follows his husband into the kitchen with plates in his hands, “Stop being so overdramatic. You’ll survive.”

Blaine picks his head up and looks at Kurt earnestly, “I don’t think I will. Can we like…pretend to get the stomach flu and tell them they need to leave?”

“No!” Kurt exclaims, “These are my colleagues. That would be the height of rudeness.”

“But they are insufferable!” Blaine whines, “I don’t think I’ve EVER met two more uppity people in my life and that’s saying a lot - I hung out with Sebastian during junior year.”

Kurt’s eyes narrow, “You honestly just can’t get over it and be nice for an evening? God knows some of your colleagues aren’t amazing.” He says. He knows Joanna and Clark are slightly hard to handle but he’s feeling defensive.

“I feel like there’s a difference.” Blaine argues before affecting a higher, nasally voice to imitate Kurt’s coworker, “Oh Kurt look at this swatch I got from Paris. It’s such a bold aubergine.” He rolls his eyes and drops the imitation of Joanna, “It’s fucking purple.” He says.

Kurt grabs the pie from the counter with more force than necessary as he glares at Blaine, “Fine. I’ll say you got sick and had to go upstairs. I’ll spend the rest of the evening with them alone. Run along now.” He sneers, before turning on his heel and leaving the room.

Blaine sighs, feeling like an ass. He’s just frustrated and annoyed and felt the need to complain but…of course he’s going to finish the evening and be nice to Kurt’s coworkers. Not only is that how he was raised but he also just wants to support Kurt.

He makes his way back to the living room and enters just as he hears Kurt say, “Blaine is…” Kurt pauses when Blaine enter, before blinking at his husband and turning back to his coworkers, “…is such a fan of apple pie.” He says, clearly having changed his sentence.

Blaine gives Kurt a small smile and tries to convey his apology with his eyes. Now isn’t the time to air out the conversation out loud.

Kurt stares at him for a second before nodding, accepting the apology, and turning back to his coworkers to continue the evening.

On the plus side, I’ve written over 3,000 words for my Empty Nest verse including some that have been in my head for over a year. It’s from Burt’s perspective. (Not first person. Just his side of things.) I’m hoping this gets me back in the writing groove.

I still feel bad about my Klaine Advent fic though. I have other chapters finished including the ending. I just don’t have the chapter finished that comes up next chronologically. :(

Ultimately, neither Kurt nor Blaine felt their canon counterparts and I didn't really even like either of them. The character that read most like their canon counter part to me was Sue. Rachel was a total caricature. Others were so villianized they were stripped of any kind of recognizable humanity. Also, @coffeegleek​ I have never said anything about it either due to the degree with which this fic is celebrated. But I figure with just a small group of us left it's fine.

This fic didn't work for me for a lot of reasons but what rubbed me the wrong way and mostly turned me off the fic was what you discussed regarding Kurt and Blaine and each being coded very female/masc respectively, (@coffeegleek, yes, hetronormative I agree). This is a major pet peeve for me in any story. In the show's canon, the four core queer characters-Britt, San, and Kurt and Blaine have a much more nuanced and layered portrayal of these characteristics.

I read this fic years ago, mostly out of an odd sense of fandom obligation because it was one of those "fandom famous" fics, (I never go into the superhero thing either but I figured I gotta see what the fuss is about).

@coffeegleek - I’m not sure why your reply doesn’t come up, but I’m answering you as well as Nikki 

The kind of crazy thing about Kurt and Blaine in this story is the very coded female/masculine coding (which I’m really grateful I’m not the only who who sees it).  RJ is an intelligent writer, and and she’s very good with actual story telling.  She’s also very aware of social issues, so I’m kind of perplexed that the dynamic is the way it is - because I don’t think it’s something RJ is consciously doing.  Is it the way she writes in general? I don’t know - I barely read her other Klaine stories, so I can’t comment on that.  

I also wonder if some of it, besides my earlier post discussing that she derives the characters from early canon points that don’t line up with the later seasons, if she was more interested than making the characters fit the plot over being true to what canon is - which leads to my question of - how far can something go AU before it’s just original fiction? 

But I think she had a certain dynamic she wanted to explore, she was fairly consistent with her characterization after all, and she stuck to the story she wanted to tell over being true to canon characterization.  I hate to use the world ‘problematic’ especially when RJ really did try to be careful with such things, but I do think it’s weird paradoxical thing that through trying to point out society’s flaws with women, etc, she ends up giving this gay/male couple a very heteronormative dynamic that is not only not there in canon, but unintentionally gives the narrative some of the problems she’s trying to make readers aware of.  

And on top of that - she does miss some of the more complex nuances of Kurt and Blaine - the fact that Kurt’s emotion is very selfish in nature and the fact that Blaine is just as effeminate as Kurt.  As well as - while she gets some of the broader issues with being gay right (of course people are going to yell slurs at them), the heteronormative dynamic doesn’t allow for some of canon’s homosexual explorations - like the fact that Blaine yearns to be gay and be gay in public, or the fact that being two men in a relationship is a uniquely masculine experience.  

(There’s also a way bigger conversation about gender wrapped up in this - what is feminine and masculine? etc, that is just way out of my wheelhouse, so I’m not fully able to discuss.)
