Happy [belated] International Photography Day! This is one of my favorite portraits, taken while street shooting in New Orleans. He was standing outside his shop and stopped me to talk. It was one of the most fascinating conversations I ever had, he truly wanted to know who I was, it felt as if those eyes could look straight into my soul. He told me about his journey from Syria with a young pregnant wife decades ago and lived pretty much as a nomad for 30 years around America. Before I left, he grabbed my face, kissed me on the forehead and said "shalom lekha" (peace be with you in Yiddish), as he lightly slapped my cheek. His name was Shlomo.
