Photo by @amivitale. Mpala passes through low vegetation during her daily nature walk at Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya. Mpala came to the sanctuary on June 21 from a ranch in Laikipia. She was orphaned due to the ongoing drought. Today, she is thriving at Reteti under the excellent care of the wildlife keepers. Photo by @amivitale. Scientists wrangle a tranquilized giraffe to quickly attach a tiny, solar-powered satellite tracker to the ossicone (the horn-like structures atop the giraffe's head). These GPS trackers will gain critical insight into reticulated giraffes’ preferred habitat, their home ranges, and more, in order to bolster long-term efforts to stop the "silent extinction" of giraffe. In early June, I followed a group from the San Diego Zoo Global (@sandiegozoo), the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (@giraffe_conservation) and the Northern Rangelands Trust (@nrt_kenya) as they worked to collar and tag 11 giraffe in the Loisaba (@loisaba_conservancy) and Leparua Conservancies in Northern Kenya. Photo by @amivitale for @natgeo. Kenya Wildlife Service (@kenyawildlifeservice) rangers tranquilize a reticulated giraffe in order to tag and collar the giraffe so scientists can track its movements. They move fast and the giraffe is back on its feet quickly. They hope to learn much more about giraffe behavior in the coming years in order to stop the "silent extinction" of the world's tallest animal. Photo by @amivitale. After Samburu warriors discovered two-week old elephant Kinya stuck in a well, they called in wildlife keepers from Reteti Elephant Sanctuary (@r.e.s.c.u.e) in Northern Kenya. The rangers waited overnight with the baby in the hope that her family may return to find her, but eventually transported her to Reteti for safekeeping.
