I didn’t know what to expect from #Ecuador. Traditionally, I’m a cold weather lover and don’t fare too well in equatorial climates. But I absolutely fell in love with the country, the people, the wildlife, and the food! It is an incredibly diverse and beautiful country, and the people of Ecuador are some of the warmest and most gentle and kind I’ve ever come across. One of my favorite experiences there was hiking in the cloud forests surrounding the incredible Mashpi Lodge (one of Nat Geo’s Unique Lodges of the World). We hiked to this beautiful waterfall called Healing Waters, where one can get a behind-the-falls rush after a sweaty hike. The Samburu are traditionally nomadic pastoralists and the community here has been deeply involved in creating and managing the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy, an 850,000 acre area helping preserve the diversity of wildlife found here. Photo by @amivitale. Shorty the giraffe loves to give kisses! Here he greets wildlife keeper Banki at Sarara Camp (@sararacamp) on the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. Shorty, or "Fupi" in Swahili, will go back to the wild once strong enough to survive on his own. He is a reticulated giraffe, which scientists have recently begun to consider as one of four distinct species of giraffe. Reticulated giraffe number about 8,000 individuals — as a separate species, it makes them some of the most endangered large mammals in the world as the population has dropped an estimated 70 percent in 15 years. The first community-owned and -run elephant sanctuary in Africa, Reteti sits on the Namunyak Wildlife Conservancy in Northern Kenya. The highly trained keepers were recruited from the local community.
