How about some good news about declines on poaching to start the week?!🐘| Repost @amivitale | Photo by @amivitale. Thanks to tracker dogs like Rocky and Rosdaz, elephant poaching at the 35,000-acre Manyara Ranch has been greatly reduced. In 2014 and 2015, poachers killed 17 elephants inside the ranch. In 2016, this number fell to zero. So far, there have been none in 2017. “These days, not only does an elephant die naturally, its tusks are left intact. This would have never happened before.” says Fidelis Olekashe, a security expert and former member of the Tanzanian military who manages the ranch. This journey turned out to be one of the most unimaginable explorations I've ever had. In a region where bad environmental news is common, the giant panda might prove to be the exception and is a testament to the perseverance and efforts of Chinese scientists and conservationists. By breeding and releasing pandas, augmenting existing populations and protecting habitat, they are on their way to successfully saving their most famous ambassador and in the process put the wild back into an icon.
