WIP excerpt time!

So for something new, some paragraphs I wrote for an idea of a fanfic for another obscure (which should not be!) literary work, Ninay:

The crier, who had been at a corner, returned to the center and announced, “Our new champion, el joven Tito!” The crowd let out a raucous cheer. Then the man once more asked, “Now, who wants to challenge our new champion?” The crowd muttered amongst themselves. Who would dare challenge the man who had just emerged triumphant at the most recent match? Pilar knew that if she did step up in the challenge, she would berate herself for her impulse. Yet it was the spark in his dark eyes that drew her to him. A promise of a challenge, which she would respond with her own. Disentangling from Loleng, she stepped forward, not smiling but lifting her chin up. “I am.” The crowd murmured amongst themselves. Pilar heard someone wondering aloud what a pretty lass wanted to do with the chess rat. Ignoring the mutterings, she walked forward and said, “I may not be up to par with your skills, but I want to prove myself, Señor Tito.” Tito tilted his head at the side. He appeared to contemplate her, and with how he stared at her and his appearance, it was as if she knew him from another life. She was not sure if he was the same man. But she did not back down. “Are you sure, Señorita…” “Pilar,” she answered. Then she smiled at him and asked, “So do we play the game? Do not tell me you are afraid of a woman.” To her surprise, he laughed, but it was not cruel. When he calmed down, their gazes locked. Pilar forgot to breathe as he said, “I have not been challenged by a lady as charming as you.” I was anything but charming, Pilar wanted to correct him. “But you are here now, and I am not one to back down,” he announced. He went to the chessboard, grabbed two pieces and kept them within their hold. “Choose your color.” Pilar slowly raised a finger, pointed at the left. Tito revealed that she chose the black pawn.

A bit of the idea I have written for my Ninay time-travel AU:

The chirping of the sparrows brought Pilar back to her senses. But she did not open her eyes, fearing that she would think she was in a dream. But something was wrong. Her head was on a soft pillow, a blanket draped over her body. When she turned, she knew that she was on a bed. I am not in hell, not in the roaring fires to burn and not turn to ashes. How did this happen?

More Star Ocean 2: Bowman Jeane is pansexual/panromantic. His wife Ninay is a 2 or so on the Kinsey scale (generally prefers men, occasionally attracted to others.) Their good friend and partner Keith Krasner is asexual and homoromantic, and the three of them are a fairly happy triad. (Bowman and Ninay have occasionally entertained other lovers together - ex. Opera and Ernest - which is fine by Keith, but he's not interested in participating. Not physically, anyway.)
