Hi there, to everyone who followed me recently. I am truly honoured by your choice to do so. ="") So, finally recalibrated my phone- which refused to accept Vodafone India (can't say I blame it now, really) and give you a short post. Don't worry, it's not going to be a boring "I did this and saw that while riding in a thingamajig" post. This trip to rural Germany brought to life several things that was horror on screen till now. At the same time, like an oasis, the person we stayed with was a vegan who forbade storage of meat, dairy and eggs in her house. The sad thing about living among farmers is, well. The dairy and meat farms. They may not be industrialized, but they sure as hell are just as horrific. The visit to a biogas/dairy farm was especially disheartening. The mothers staring out longingly from narrow bars, within earshot of their teetering calves was just plain heartbreaking. The worst bit of course to me at the time was the condescension with which my father looked at these beautiful cows. We asked them how long the gestation period is, the guy said nine months. To which my infuriatingly selfish and egoistic father says "almost like a human". ALMOST. Fucking what did you just say?! How can you stand that close to.another living, loving being and still be so fucking far away? The worst bit was my mom narrating how this farm exemplified coexistence to my.girlfriend today, as if she was selling it. Something about symbiotic relationships and loss and gain. Or some codswallop. Symbiotic. *facepalm* of course!!! They offer their milk, freedom, dignity and their babies and in return we provide them with regimental routines to pull their teats, keep them in small cages because apparently it's "too cold" for them through the year and we also give them the greatest gift of all- the sense of bereavement of hope such that the only thing they can do is live in this nightmare in feeble resignation.
