The Rise of Phoenixes 天盛長歌 (2018), Episode 44
This is one of my other favourite Ning Yi/Ning Cheng interactions in the drama. Ning Cheng is so devastated that Ning Yi is leaving him behind. He's never been separated from him for more than three days, so the attachment is real. And again, we have Ning Yi sitting casually on the steps as Ning Cheng is knelt obediently in front.
Ning Yi clarifies that he wants Ning Cheng to carry out work for him.
This part really gets me, when Ning Yi goes "Ning Cheng, you're grown up now. I'm relying on you." It makes me think that Ning Cheng was probably supposed to be maybe a late teen in this drama (though the actor is an adult).
Wu Ying was supposed a eunuch sent to spy on Ning Yi, and eventually he came to join Ning Yi's side. Look at how fondly he's looking on. He understands that this isn't a master and servant. This is a big brother trying to wean his little brother to be less attached, but also a prince who needs his trusted bodyguard to truly be an extension of him.
Ning Cheng trying to be a big boy.
Ning Yi then moves down one step to be on the same level as Ning Cheng.
This is Ning Yi trying to show some love, because he knows that Ning Cheng is struggling with feeling abandoned. And ugh, this always got me. We rarely see Ning Yi show affection because he's just so goddamn guarded and he's showing it now T_T
And now it's back to master and servant.
"Anything happens to him and I'll kill you both."
And as Ning Cheng takes one last look at his master, Ning Yi just waves him away without looking at him. And it makes me think that this is Ning Yi really wants Ning Cheng to understand that he's a big boy now, and Ning Yi needs him to more than just fight for him. He needs him to help him in his quest for justice, and that's more than just punching and kicking, it's using his brain and doing what Ning Yi would do in navigating palace politics.
Trop thoughts today: am I the only one that ships Ning Cheng and Gu Nanyi...
In episode 43 when Zhiwei is to be executed, Ning Cheng goes to Ning Yi, worried that he seems un bothered by her death scentence and tries to get a rise out of his master to do something about it. While doing so, Ning Cheng says he won’t be able to fight with Gu Nanyi any more. I assume that this means sparing and bickering. This implies that not only do these fighting matches happen, they happen often enough for Ning Cheng to enjoy it and miss it if it were gone.
So obviously my mind went straight to flirty Ning Cheng pestering an oblivious and irritable Gu Nanyi... Sparing whenever they meet, Nanyi always wining and Ning Cheng unable to stop trying to best him.. Eventually, Ning Cheng realizes he goes to Nanyi quite often, using “sparing” as an excuse to spend time with him.
Like, I’d be fine with unrequited love.. Nanyi clearly has affection and love for Zhiwei, even if he doesn’t know what to call it, and Ning Chengis devoted to Ning Yi, but I can just see him looking at Zhiwei and Ning Yi’s relationship and not understanding it until he goes searching for Nanyi and realizes that maybe his fondness for Nanyi is quite similar to Ning Yi’s fondness for Zhiwei. They both have exceptional skill— intellect for Ning Yi/Zhiwei and physical/martial arts skill for Nanyi/Ning Cheng— and Ning Cheng understands the search for an equal, for a challenge, when everyone else pales in comparison.
Honestly Ning Cheng and his relationship with Ning Yi, however you view it, is adorable. Ning Cheng is just adorable
What I’m really doing when I’m animating... Thank you guys for your help! XD Watch other films made by my classmates: https://vimeo.com/channels/calartscharanimfilms2018
Ending Song: “Form is emptiness, emptiness is form…”
Hope you like it. XD
I'm honestly shipping Ning Yi with everyone. Tell me to my face that Zhuyin, Xin Ziyan, Ning Cheng, Huo Laosan, and Zhiwei don't all love him
Found this in my hard drive.
