"They're firing on us!" Jin Zixuan sounds more offended than afraid. Wen Ning can't muster up the same bravado as he watches his proximity sensors light up with ships on every side. So this is what happens when you break a planetary heir out of Wen custody.

uhhhhh let’s go with... wen ning/jin zixuan, for the “holding my heart in your hand” jokes (or the other, more nsfw jokes that one could make 😳)

Y’know, I feel like wen ning and jzx could have actually been friends if... you know... situations hadnt happened and they werent a jin and a wen. romeo and juliet anyone? now with twice the “rip your heart out of your chest” action!

falls asleep on the couch: Jin Zixuan. Have YOU ever tried dealing with Jin Guangshan? it’s exhausting! 

makes friends with the neighbors: They both do. Jin Zixuan may be an awkward potato of a man, but he knows a thing or two about diplomacy and making people like you. and people just love wen ning automatically even if he’s too shy to interact with others. 

is the adventurous eater: wen ning by a long shot, only because the jin family eat only snooty rich people food. wen ning will introduce him to the concept of street food! you can’t just eat caviar all the time, sweetie! 

hogs the covers at night: jin zixuan. wen ning doesn’t need them and there’s a DRAFT in jin zixuan’s body, thank you very much! 

forgets to do the dishes: jin zixuan doesn’t do dishes, that is for poor people. wen ning, trophy housewife extraordinaire, NEVER forgets, though. 

tries to surprise their partner more often: hey wen ning! want some new jewelry? a guan made of solid silver? the rarest tea in china? jin zixuan’s got you covered, bby! 

leaves dirty laundry on the floor: neither do, because wen ning likes to be tidy and jin zixuan would never leave his prada hanfu on the ground. who do you think he is? 

stays up til 2 AM reading: jin zixuan can easily lose track of time. wen ning has to physically lift him up and put him to bed. <3 

sings in the shower: wen ning has a special song for each thing he does in the shower. jin zixuan is particularly fond of the “washing my hair” song. 

takes the selfies: jin zixuan. he knows the proper angles to hide the giant gaping hole in his chest. sorry babe, wen ning didn’t mean it. mwah~ 

plans date night: it isn’t so much he plans them out, but whatever wen ning says he wants to do, jin zixuan is going to find a way to make sure he gets to experience it.

i’m gonna make you think about my ship :D come up with some body-part-canons for... ningxuan!

Headcanon: Look, friend, as far as I can tell, apart from that time Wen Ning put a hand through Jin Zixuan's chest, they had zero interaction in canon. What can I make a cogent argument for wrt what would make sense for them? Not much, I'm sorry to say. For CQL canon, however, the moment of Jin Zixuan's death is extra heartbreaking if he and Wen Ning managed to interact during the Guest Lectures at the Cloud Recesses. Assuming (and this is a big assumption) that a) Jin Zixuan manages to unbend long enough to interact with people outside his sect and b) Wen Ning doesn't actually die of shyness the first time JZX speaks with him, I do think their friendship has the same attraction that the much more often discussed JZX and LWJ friendship does, to wit: look at these awkward young masters who are bad at socializing, what if they wallflowered together?

Heartcanon: Ok now that we've got that finicky head stuff out of the way! In a world where Jin Zixuan stumbles on Wen Ning doing archery (whether CQLverse in Gusu or MDZSverse in Qishan), it may be that he forgets his awkwardness in the opportunity to nerd out about this skill they share, & I think that's very cute. (Wen Ning may be a more interested recipient of Jin Zixuan's infodumping about his special interest: monsters you can night hunt)

Gutcanon: In a canonverse AU where Jin Zixuan has a guilty crush on Wen Ning & all the baggage around his father's behavior, it would take Jiang Yanli facilitating to make anything happen between them, and by god she would make it happen.

Junkcanon: Look, that one Sentinel AU fic lives rent free in my head, so there's that. Oh a personal note, I think that they would be unbearably gentle with each other in bed, just lots of long, slow kisses and tender lovemaking.

Spleencanon: I hereby ignore canon, declare Jin Zixuan alive, and make him a primary mover of the push to reintegrate the Wens into cultivation society after Sunshot, a) because getting WWX out of the Burial Mounds would make Yanli happy and b) because Wen Ning somehow broke free of necromantic control entirely to save Jin Zixuan's life, and Jin Zixuan is Suddenly Interested (this of course exists in the same AU as my gutcanon)

From Gui-shenyi, my WIP where Wen Ning accidentally becomes a battlefield legend during the Sunshot Campaign.

A Wen soldier stands among the fallen bodies, focused on the far side of the clearing. On the ground there, a Jin is slumped on his knees, one hand braced against the muddy earth, the other holding a sword in front of him in a loose guard. The cut of his robes, more blood than gold at this point, indicate a high-ranking member of the main clan, and even though Wen Ning can’t get a good look at his face, the sword is recognizable enough.

Suihua.

The Wen takes a step forward. Jin-gongzi’s sword comes up, aiming at his heart.

The Wen soldier stops in his tracks and laughs. “I don’t need to get close to kill you,” he sneers. “You must be able to feel the poison by now. Can’t you tell we didn’t lie? There’s no way out!”

It is very easy, in the face of this tableau, to make a decision.

on a less silly note, wen ning deserves nice things, and jin zixuan will give him lots of nice things! there’s also a lot of potential in pairing together two of mdzs’s most awkward characters—they’re bound to have some incredibly clumsy conversations, based on wen ning’s shyness and jin zixuan’s general inability to actually talk with people, and it’s interesting for me to think about how they could get from there to a loving relationship (or how they could not, if we’re going the tragedy route, which there’s also lots of potential for).

also, between jin zixuan’s sense of fairness and lack of political awareness and wen ning’s “commit treason now, think later” methodology, they have the potential to cause So Many Problems

there should be more of it. i’ll drive this ship myself if i have to, but it’s always nice to have company
