Peter’s memorial wound down. Students and teachers disappeared in crowds of two or three, until it was only a few of them left in the gymnasium. May talked with man named Roger Harrington in low tones, while Tony haunted a giant version of Peter’s school photo printed out on a poster board.

Notes were scribbled on post-its and stuck to the edges. All the tiny words blurred together, mostly because Tony couldn’t bring himself to read messages from Peter’s school friends, begging for his return. A group of white candles in clear, glass jars burned at the bottom of the photo, and from the occasional, nervous glances from Roger, Tony guessed this breach in fire safety was only being allowed to let students grieve their friend.

“What does it cost you to answer my questions?” he demanded.

“It’s not so much what it costs as that it’s just more fun not to,” Xue Yang said. Xiao Xingchen exhaled noisily, and Xue Yang grinned up at him. “Come on, Daozhang. Make up your mind. Just a matter of who gets the honor of cutting my head off, isn’t it?”

I mean, true. This is just extra painful because it's been giving me meta thoughts about how we (almost?) always see Lymond from another characters perspective, so when we get to see any emotion from him it's generally when he's absolutely broken. The fact that even though he's not pleading or desperate we can see just how badly he's hurting underneath the character he's playing just makes my heart ache.

It's one of the many things I find really interesting about the way Lymond and Gabriel are played against each other in The Disorderly Knights. Lymond is closed off and distant where Gabriel is open and sincere so you can see exactly why all the characters would pick him over Lymond. When you realise how much he's been hiding, it's incredible that he could come across as so honest and trustworthy.

It's funny, because from the scene where he was introduced I had Gabriel pegged as either the villain or Lymond's long lost brother (or both), but the reveal was still a shock because of how kind and emotionally available he was shown to be up to that point.

I read the HS AU at work despite having a deadline I should be working on and grinned like an idiot at my phone the entire time because I LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT IT.
