My current thoughts on Randy Cunningham 9thGrade ninja( i hope i wrote it right)(Season 1)
THIS MAY CONTAIN A FEW SPOILERS ON SEASON OF RANDY CUNNINGHAM 9TH GRADE NINJA, AND THOUGH IT ENDED WHILE AGO I STILL ENCOURAGE YOU TO CHECK IT OUT BY YOURSELF
as you may be ale to guess by the drawing, i mostly decided to check it out thanks to the amount of art i see of him and danny from danny phantom toegather(i might enjoy crackships)
i'm often very picky about my shows, my attention isn't really caught by more "boyish" shows, BUT that's the kind of thought i had BEFORE i watched Danny Phantom, and the amount of IMMEDIATE fanart i've made for it right after the night i watched the few first episodes really tells how much i've loved this show, without to mention right after i finished it my first instinct was to ask for the first(and at time only novel) as a birthday/christmas gift from my mom , too bad i was too inatentive and lost it at the begining/half of 2025 in an uber(R.I.P. he never warned us i left something there but even then it was my fault regardless) BUT, this isn't about DP so i'll (try to )stop talking about it.
(i'm really sorry if i botched something, i watch it on the brazillian portuguese dub, obviously cuz its my language but i'm still afraid i'll get something wrong thanks to a translation error or something)
The opening sequence? Gorgeous, it kinda left me with a bit too high of an expectation for the artstyle and animation itself but what gotta do about it? Despite that ot really delivers an important bit of lore the show's about, the Norrisville highschool, as well as the city of Norrisville itself has been protected by a ninja for decades, but what the people don't know is that every four years a new ninja is chosen, always selected at the begining of their freshman year, and this year the chosen one is the titular bitchular(totally not stolen from AthenaP, awesome channel btw) Randy who is often acompanied by his friend Howard,
their friendship seemed a lil toxic to me at first, since i first perceived howard as a jerk, but overtime i saw Randy be alittle bit of a jerk too, mostly to learn a lesson on the episode and despite that they both really care about eachother, and will always be there for eachother no matter what(weather they like it or not)
the show's humour as well as a few other things are pretty dated on 2012/14 humour if you ask me but personally the humour is more noticed since it's pretty much bathroom humour most of the time wich i remember being far more prominent back then, and the highschool parts of the plot with randy and howard trying to be perceived as cool and awesome guys or just trying not to fail their assignements with the rich spoiled dumb kid bully who looks like he should arleady have graduated by now( and i lowkey think that's the case for him), really reeks of 2010 for me, i look at it and really feel like it's a disney chennel show from this time.
side tangeant, what's with protagonists from the 2010's-2019's having some important books containing crazy lore or crazy powers?( or both in randy's case), we had Dipper Pines with the journals(Gravity Falls) , Star Butterfly with the Butterfly family's spellbook(Star vs the forces of evil), and randy with the nomicon( Randy cunningham 9nth grade ninja) is there anyone else, especially with disney i should know about?? Anyways back on topic
Of all the bits of lore that were dropped, the one i find most interesting is "the ultimate lesson" that can only be acessed after a ninja completes their training, HOWEVER the thing is that when you complete your training your mind is cleared of all your lessons and memories of being a ninja presumably to preseved the secrets of the nomicon. When we first learned about hat lesson is when Randy tries to acess it way earlier than he's supossed to and that leads to him forgetting everything down to his own name which i assumed the memory erasure was only as drastic as it was beacause he brute forced trying to learn it way earlier and beacause of that howard takes the job of ninja for the day.
Upon learning this my following thoughts were:
1- by the end of the series Randy's memory will probably be erased as he'll likely have learned all his lessons by then, especially knowing its now his turn to write his knowladge into the nomicon.
2-The red and black (or more black than red in Randy's case) hero who will likely forget his memory thanks to watever circumstance by the end of the story reminded me a lot of miraculous: tales of ladybug and chat noir, ashow i used to LOVE back in the day, the hiy and intrigue it brought to me was abundant, black and red teen heroes wielding an ancient artifact who's been passed down from holder to holder over the decades fighting monsters or villains created by negative emotions? too similar for me not to compare! it gets even more simlar rembembering that after the end of season 3, marinette/ladybug becomes the guardian of the miracle box which leads to master fu(ckass) losing all his memories of being a guardian and a few more, which means when time comes, the same will happen to marinette, thankfully she has a diary which means she'll keep some of her memories atleast.
