A Mansion built Entirely from Junk
On the outskirts of Cambria, California, is a mansion built from recycled trash. The mansion is owned by Arthur Harold Beal and took him over 50 years to build. This mansion is called the “Nit Wit Ridge” and this idea came up due to his inability to throw anything away.
Beal started working on this project in 1928 where he dug a 2.5 acre hollow on a hillside in Cambria and filled it with all sorts of trash. He also used trash to construct terrace gardens, ornamental stone arches, buildings, fountains and walkways. Currently, this mansion is 3 stories tall and made out of materials like beer cans, car parts, old stoves and many more.
Unfortunately, Beal died in 1992 and his crematory ashes were spread around his favourite redwood on Nit Wit Ridge. Since 1999, the ownership of the house belongs to Michael and Stacey O’Malley who conduct tours of the house and gardens by appointment.
