Morton Castle remains by Kenny Muir on Flickr.
The ruins of Morton Castle, built in the late 13th century are by an artificial loch in the hills above Nithsdale, in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. Morton Castle once formed part of a chain of castles along the strategically important Nith Valley, which runs from the Solway Firth north to the Clyde Valley.
The Treaty of Berwick in 1357, which secured the release of David II, also required the Scots to destroy thirteen castles in Nithsdale, including Morton. It is not clear how much of the original castle remains.
