For the 4th year in the row I will be attending the Nitrate Picture Show at the George Eastman Museum in Rochester, NY. I was in town for the pre-festival screening of “Hamlet” (Dir. Laurence Olivier, 1948, UK), and had pre-bought tickets, but then skipped it to go watch the Rochester Red Wings play as the Plates. (I know this choice will be polarizing, but I love minor league baseball games, and stand by this decision.) A post on this year’s festival will be forthcoming.

#nitrateshow2018 #nitrateishot #roc Staggeringly astounding conclusion to @eastmanmuseum 4th Nitrate Picture Show film festival, the "Blind Date with Nitrate" film was "Man of Aran," Robert Flaherty, UK 1934. Festival director Paolo Cherchi Usai, introducing the film, said whatever the nitrate characteristic is, this film has it. The film immerses the viewer in the struggle for survival in the daily lives of these people of the Aran Islands, western Ireland. You are drawn in to the depth of visual tone and detail, combined with gripping and harsh realism, and themes of powerful and unforgiving Nature, with a human spirit for cooperation and survival. #nitrateshow2018 #nitrateishot #roc The @eastmanmuseum golden curtain rises dramatically, suspensefully, and S-L-O-W-L-Y on the @nitrateshow "Special Pre-Nitrate Picture Show Screening" of Hamlet directed by Sir Laurence Olivier 1948. The imagery and acting blew me away (won four Academy Awards). You must go see a screening of one of the nitrate films this weekend at the 4th Nitrate Picture Show. The Dryden Theatre at @eastmanmuseum is one of only TWO theaters in the US that can screen nitrate films, nitrate being the material for movie film for the first half century of cinema from its beginning until 1951. People are visiting Rochester from all over the world to attend this unique and special film festival. The actual film reels of Hamlet we saw tonight are from the Library of Congress's copyright collection. It hasn't been screened since the 1940s, sitting on the Library's shelves waiting for this moment for the past 70 years. It was stunning! (at George Eastman Museum)
