julia x hailey: Not Just Another Werewolf Romance
Scene from Chapter 13 of Not Just Another Werewolf Romance
“Ms. Hartford has to know, right? I mean there’s no way she hasn’t noticed us disappearing halfway through class every day.” Julia took a heavy sip of her soda.
“Absolutely. I just can’t decide iif she’s letting it happen because she likes us, or because she’d rather us not be there anyway.” I laughed. We’d been in Ms. Hartford’s classes every year in high school. At first, it was a coincidence, but it felt like a tradition by senior year.
“I choose to believe both,” Julia smiled while taking a sideways bite of her taco.
“You’re probably right. Of all the things we’ve accomplished in high school, I think my favorite is knowing that our teachers will never forget us. We’re an unforgettable duo. Forever.” My words were soft and nostalgic, but she could always hear what I wasn’t saying.
“Are you okay, Hailey?” She put down her food and leaned her chin on her hands.
“Okay, talk about a vibe pivot,” I blinked and pulled a half smile. “Yeah, I’m fine. Why?”
“I don’t know, I just have this feeling that you’re hiding something from me.” She looked down, avoiding eye contact. My palms started sweating.
Now? Really? While skipping class to go to Taco Bell?
“You’re sad. You’ve never been so closed off from me,” Julia tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. “You’ve been acting different since, you know,” she started to whisper, “the accident.”
“Julia, I promise I don’t blame you for that,” I don’t remember the last time I felt so relieved. I could play this off and not have to start going into werewolf territory, right?”
“I know. You’ve said that, but that’s not it. You don’t act like you resent me. You’re sad. Why aren’t you opening up to me?” She looked genuinely sad.
“I didn’t realize,” I played with the corner of burrito wrapping. “I guess you’re right, I’ve been really stressed about this semester. I wish I had something to tell you, but I don’t.” Will I ever stop lying?
“Okay,” she sounded hesitant to believe me, “just remember I’m your best friend forever and ever, okay?” “Bitch that is the craziest thing I have ever heard,” I started laughing, trying to lighten the mood. “I could never forget that. I’m not sure if you remember, but you’re stuck with me for life.”
