julia x hailey: Not Just Another Werewolf Romance
Scene from Chapter 13 of Not Just Another Werewolf Romance
âMs. Hartford has to know, right? I mean thereâs no way she hasnât noticed us disappearing halfway through class every day.â Julia took a heavy sip of her soda.Â
âAbsolutely. I just canât decide iif sheâs letting it happen because she likes us, or because sheâd rather us not be there anyway.â I laughed. Weâd been in Ms. Hartfordâs classes every year in high school. At first, it was a coincidence, but it felt like a tradition by senior year.Â
âI choose to believe both,â Julia smiled while taking a sideways bite of her taco.Â
âYouâre probably right. Of all the things weâve accomplished in high school, I think my favorite is knowing that our teachers will never forget us. Weâre an unforgettable duo. Forever.â My words were soft and nostalgic, but she could always hear what I wasnât saying.
âAre you okay, Hailey?â She put down her food and leaned her chin on her hands.Â
âOkay, talk about a vibe pivot,â I blinked and pulled a half smile. âYeah, Iâm fine. Why?â
âI donât know, I just have this feeling that youâre hiding something from me.â She looked down, avoiding eye contact. My palms started sweating.Â
Now? Really? While skipping class to go to Taco Bell?Â
âYouâre sad. Youâve never been so closed off from me,â Julia tucked a piece of her hair behind her ear. âYouâve been acting different since, you know,â she started to whisper, âthe accident.â
âJulia, I promise I donât blame you for that,â I donât remember the last time I felt so relieved. I could play this off and not have to start going into werewolf territory, right?â
âI know. Youâve said that, but thatâs not it. You donât act like you resent me. Youâre sad. Why arenât you opening up to me?â She looked genuinely sad.Â
âI didnât realize,â I played with the corner of burrito wrapping. âI guess youâre right, Iâve been really stressed about this semester. I wish I had something to tell you, but I donât.â Will I ever stop lying?
âOkay,â she sounded hesitant to believe me, âjust remember Iâm your best friend forever and ever, okay?â âBitch that is the craziest thing I have ever heard,â I started laughing, trying to lighten the mood. âI could never forget that. Iâm not sure if you remember, but youâre stuck with me for life.â Â

Dedicated to the Girl Who Never Was
----
The bus is shiny and new- it's obviously not frequently used.Â
You step on and are greeted by Lisa (the first of many Lisas you're going to meet). She's chewing gum obnoxiously. Her dark black hair falls over her eyes. Her lips are the same dark purple that coats the walls of the bus.
"I'm in charge of letting people in," she says, looking at you with piercing green eyes. "It doesn't happen very often, but I see you have a visitor's pass. So I guess I'll be seeing you out as well."Â
She sneers and the doors slam shut behind you. You fumble around, trying to find a seat. The bus is completely empty besides you and the driver.
You are suddenly overwhelmed with nervous energy. You feel flooded by a hard and fast rush of nausea and apprehension. This paranoia has caught you off guard. You glance back to the driver, who just laughs and says "get used to it. You're in our head now."
You find a seat all the way back in the corner.
The ride is bumpy and long as you travel to Lisaâs mind.
As the bus pulls to a stop, you notice a big metal door and what looks like a secretary's desk. The desk is dusty and vacant.
The dark haired driver literally kicks you out of the bus and you land on the metal floor by the desk.
"See you on the flip side!" she calls out after you, cackling.
You stand up and dust yourself off. You have no idea what to do now. You try to hit the buzzer on the secretary's desk, but no sound comes out. You resort to rapping your knuckles against the iron door, just below the etched letters reading "LISA'S MIND."
A thumping sound echoes back to you and you wait. Just before you decide it would be better to attempt to call back the bus, the door swings open.
"Hello!" you hear Lisa's voice, but chirpier than you've ever heard it before. You turn around and are greeted by another version of her, with long, flowing, lavender hair with a flower crown and crazy patterned leggings and a big t-shirt that looked like it came from a grown manâs closet.Â
"Hey, hi, hello!" she greets you three times in a row, rushing to shake your hand. "I'm Spirit, nice to meet you!" she smiles and blushes, reminding you of that faint twinkle you'd sometimes seen in Lisa's eye. "I'm sorry you had to meet our sister Apprehension first, she's one of the hardest to get along with. You've seen our secretary's desk- she's taken a leave of absence. But that's ok- creativity never was a friend of organization." She laughs and flings her purple locks over her shoulder.
She starts walking into the room without you. You're not quite sure if you're supposed to follow, or if you even want to. She turns back and beckons you in with her eyes, shining a color that reminds you of sea glass.
You walk through the doors and are instantly bombarded by a sensory overload. Large screens lined the walls, all playing something different.
"What are those for?" you question Spirit, who you're assuming will be your tour guide for the rest of the trip.
"Those are everything we're trying to get her to focus on. Every thought she has is filtered through those screens, and monitored by Attention and her employees. I'll introduce you to her." Spirit shows you to a large table that resembles every control desk you've ever seen in any sci-fi movie. "Oh, and by the way, she gets a little feisty if you mention her size."
Confused and trying to take everything in through the noise, (you've noticed a faint static sound that fills the entire space), you follow the lavender haired Lisa to the desk.Â
