Medelpad and Ångermanland were counted until the 14th century as part of the province hälsingland and thus sold under hälsingelagen. Norrland is first mentioned in writing in 1434. Västernorrland (Wester Norlanden) covered the norrland lands – including lappmarkerna – on the Swedish west side of the Gulf of Bothnia from the 16th century, while Östernorrland was a name for The Finnish Ostrobothnia.
A first Västernorrland County was formed as a result of the 1634 form of government. Since then there has been a county with this name all the time (except for the years 1646–1654), but it has had different scopes during different time periods. Here is an overview of Västernorrland County through the ages. During the periods when Hudiksvall was the county's residence town, the county was also called Hudiksvall County, and when Gävle was the city of residence it was also called Gävleborg County.
1634–37. Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland, Västerbotten and Ångermanna, Ume, Pite, Lule and Torne lappmarker. City of residence: Hudiksvall.
1637–45. Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland and Ångermanna lappmark. Of the northern area, Västerbotten County had been formed. From 1641, Västernorrland County was expanded with Gästrikland, which until then had been the life of dok queen Maria Eleonora. City of residence: Hudiksvall. In 1646, Västernorrland County was divided into Härnösand and Hudiksvall counties and therefore ceased to exist for a few years.
1654–58. Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Medelpad, Ångermanland and Ångermanna lappmark. City of residence: Gävle.
1658–60. Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Medelpad, Ångermanland and Ångermanna lappmark. During these years, the western provinces were part of Trondheim County. City of residence: Gävle.
1660–64. Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Medelpad, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Ångermanland and Västerbotten except Tornedalen and Ångermanna, Ume, Pite and Lule lappmarker. Torne lappmark was included during this period in Ostrobothnia County. City of residence: Gävle.
1664–94. Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Medelpad, Ångermanland and Ångermanna lappmark. City of residence: Gävle.
1694–1762. Gästrikland, Hälsingland, Härjedalen, Jämtland, Medelpad and Ångermanland. Ångermanna lappmark was transferred to Västerbotten County in 1694. City of residence: Gävle.
1762–1810. Medelpad, Ångermanland and Jämtland except an area southwest of Hundshögen that belonged to Gävleborg County. City of residence: Sundsvall until 1778, then Härnösand.
1810–. Medelpad and Ångermanland, except Nordmaling and Bjurholm, which this year was transferred to Västerbotten County. In 1974, the Ångermanland parishes Fjällsjö, Tåsjö and Bodum were transferred to Jämtland County, whereby Västernorrland County got the extent it has today.
