Premiere: NJWA - Ocean
When you think of modern R&B Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia might not be the first place that comes to mind. However, the latest release from singer-songwriter NJWA (Najwa Mahiaddin) could actually change that. The self-titled 3-song EP offers a rich mixture of warm, analog instrumentation with subtle infusions of electronica and mild stylistic references to traditional Indian, Chinese and Malay music; and all enveloped by breezy, mesmeric vocals. For the occasion MusicMap is premiering “Ocean”, a song tailor-made for the mighty now: tastefully eclectic, future-retro in design, worldly, yet still firmly rooted in the place of its origin.
Formally trained since a very young age, NJWA has been involved in the music industry for more than 20 years. To celebrate the premiere of “Ocean”, MusicMap asked her a few questions about the forthcoming EP:
Are soul and R&B a big thing in Malaysia?
We definitely have talented soul and R&B musicians here, but the scene is pretty small, and concentrated mainly on the indie side. Most live venues feature artists from various genres, but we don’t really have a venue that focuses only on R&B.
Your music sounds like you assimilated American soul and R&B, but then infused it with traditional southeastern Asian vocal styles – can you tell me a bit about that?
When I was studying in Berklee I realised that in order to stand out, I had to showcase something more – something that people hadn’t seen nor heard before. This got me into the exploration of my musical traditions. I think because I was experimenting with it on some other projects, especially with my vocals, it somehow felt right and came quite naturally during the process of recording this EP.
It seems that artists from all over the world are drawing on their local cultures – is that a tendency in Malaysia as well?
I don’t think that many people here realize just how rich our culture is. Sometimes it takes getting out to appreciate what we have. Over here, there’s this sudden obsession with K-pop and Korean culture. It’s cool, but I really appreciate artists who really push the boundaries when it comes to the infusion of local cultures to music or fashion.
Can you tell us a bit more about “Ocean”?
Ocean was produced by my husband, shakey.shakey. This is a straight up love song. I guess most people can relate to that situation when you feel helpless because you’ve made all these mistakes in your past, and it’s affecting your current relationship. I was in that situation and my past always came up no matter how much I tried to bury it. I just felt like I was drowning in it. Preproduction began in 2016, we brought our instruments and had a small setup in my brother’s room because we didn’t have our own work place then, and the rest is history. We just really wanted to create something special together.
What can we expect from the EP?
Expect to hear a different kind of soundscape, referencing musical elements from the other side of the world. “In The Name of Love” was recorded in the Malaysian jungle, and “Togok” is a traditional folk song, with an entirely traditional ensemble but modern lyrics.
NJWA EP will be out on Friday 20 April
