Who would of thought writing was hard?
To start with, there will be no chapter today.
I have been struggling quite a lot to get them done, and maybe a week was a really short time to give myself. I don’t know when I’ll finish the chapter, I was thinking of pushing myself to finish it today but it being as important a chapter as it is, I thought it was a bad idea.
I’ll probably get it done tomorrow, but no promises, regardless I’ll try to publish it Thursday. That is not to say you’ll only get the chapter Thursday, I’ll publish my rant about the gods too.
Today I’m treating you to a rant I wrote a while ago and decided not to post. Today we’re talking…
You see, my method to choose a character name is (semi) randomness. Every time I create a character I open a random name generator and generate hundreds of names, then I’d narrow it down to just a handful, and finally choose one I like.
Most of the time the choosing process was random, based on either vibes or what letter the name started with. Like: I like this name but it starts with X letter and I already have a character with an X name, so let’s choose a different one.
Though some names got more thought than others.
Ethan came to me immediately, I don’t really remember considering other names for him, but I do remember searching what his name means: “strong, firm, enduring, and long-lived”.
So you see, it was the perfect name!
Athena’s name was randomly generated, but I liked it, especially because I knew Athena to be the goddess of war (and wisdom too I guess) and when I chose her name the only thing I knew about her was that she was a strong warrior.
So, of course, my amazing girlboss needed to be named after a goddess.
You already know about Bolt’s name, aka Baltazar, but did you know at some point he was going to be named Emanuel? Me neither! I found out while going through my (very disorganized) notes!
And a little more about him, gee talk about being the golden child lol, the idea of him having a bunch of nicknames was made pretty early on, he hated his name so he asked everyone to give him a nickname, so he has many. Let’s list his known nicknames shall we:
Bolt (It started as Balt and then I had an eureka moment)
Tzar (from the zar at the end of his name)
Tzarzy (The same as Tzar)
Baltsy (You know, like ballsy… It was just funny! I had too)
Bobo (It means dumb and it fits so well)
I considered adding some others like Bi or Bee, let me know if you come up with more nicknames for him. Should Batata be one of them?
Apollo… Here’s the thing with Apollo, his name was likely random and chosen because it matched Athena’s, you know, haha so funny the siblings have themed names.
But looking back it fits quite well. His name means destructor in Latin and well, he has destruction magic and as a god Apollo can be seen as a protector against evil forces and is also the god of sudden death.
Do with that what you will.
Thomas, aka Tom, aka Tommy, aka TomTom… Well his name is just a meme lol. He’s literally lil Timmy learning how the world works. All the nicknames though? That’s just cause I had already decided at this point Bolt was a bit of an ass and liked nicknames.
And then there’s our lovely imperial couple!
Emperor Annalise and Empress Erika… You know where the names come from, right? Please tell me I wasn’t the only one obsessed with Barbie as a kid.
Though in all honesty, the name Annalise was randomly generated, I can’t tell I didn’t keep it because of Barbie. Other options for the former princess’s name included gems like:
Rufina, and, last but not least
Such amazing name ideas, right? You probably see why I chose Annalise; once I settled on it I just had to name the other one Erika.
In this case, choosing their name influenced a narrative change.
Originally, Annalise and Erika would be half sisters, Erika would have a backstory similar to Annalise’s, Annalise would be thrown out of the palace and years later a teen Erika would go get her because the same thing happened to her.
Annalise would also manipulate Erika to do her bidding.
As you have read in the last chapter, their roles have changed and very little of their initial conception remains.
I guess that’s all for names that were thought out, I mean, there’s sergeant Rebecca who used to be named Gladys and had a different rank. Her old rank was dropped when I finalized the military rank hierarchy and I changed her name because it was really similar to Grace and I like Grace more than Gladys.
And I guess I also changed the name of one of Athena’s beasts because I remember some weird family lore and thought it would be funny. (Pamela used to be Cristina but then I remember my grandma at some point had a monkey named Pamela and I just had to).
Oh! Oh! I remembered something else that’s interesting! Captain misogyny aka Captain Aaron, who my sister hates with a passion (for obvious reasons), is named after a kid I didn’t like back in primary school.
I remember next to nothing about him, just that I didn’t like him.
And, I mean I’m almost 27 and I knew this kid when I was between the ages of 6 and 8 (and I know that’s accurate because I changed schools afterwards (not because of him)), so he must have done something for me to still remember that I despised him. Sorry not sorry, I barely remember you, my guy.
But little me hated you so…
