Day 12 of Fake Inktober, I’m not using a promp list right now.
The thing that really grinds my gears about the "real masculinity is X" "patriarchy hurts men too" approach is that, if we take seriously the idea that masculinity hurts men, the obvious next step is to see what steps women have taken to alleviate the way patriarchy hurts us.
And the way we did that was by refusing to limit ourselves to "femininity," to one particular box of traits at all. The closest we got to "real femininity is-" shit is like, choice feminism and trad wifery. "Fuck the boxes, I'm choosing to be a whole person."
Feminist discourse to this day seems to have a complex about whether it's "valid" to present or act or be feminine at all, and there's a bunch of transmisogyny that grows out of that, but the underlying idea – fuck the boxes – is what works. We wear pants now. We self advocate. We support ourselves and each other. Society doesn't like that we do this, but, at least for a time, it tolerated it quietly.
We've never needed "role models for positive femininity." (though, shout out to this video series by innuendo studios for exploring the idea anyway.) We took what society denied us, and let the culture pick up the pieces after.
For that matter, you don't see this trash in other discourses. No "positive cisgendered-ness," no "positive able bodied-ness," no "positive neurotypicality," and certainly no "positive whiteness." That's what bigots do. If you see someone trying to do it in a "reclaiming the identity while rejecting the bigotry" way, it pretty much always means they've lost the plot.
Begging culture to spit out "positive masculinity" until men magically get it won't get anyone anywhere. What y'all need is to surrender the privileges masculinity affords you gracefully, and to recognize the ways patriarchy taught you you're owed things. Fuck the boxes, choose to become a whole-ass person. Pop culture's always gonna be playing catch up.
The thing is, tumblr simultaneously destroys and reinstates my faith in humanity
