　In March 2006, the opposition parties questioned the LDP government about the dangers of nuclear power plants in the Diet. The government, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), claimed that nuclear power plants were 100% safe and that there was not the slightest concern. The LDP government proclaimed safety and security and allowed 54 nuclear power plants to be built in Japan. In the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that struck the Tohoku region of Japan on March 11, 2011. On 11 March 2011, a devastating nuclear accident occurred at TEPCO's Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station. Now, ten years on from the accident, the Japanese government has decided to dump the overflowing radioactive water that was used to cool the plant into the ocean.
