“Snyder is doing something NEW because the bad guy doesn’t die at the end of the film...” First off, that’s not new, but even IGNORING the entire, you know, history of literature, it’s not even true in the DCEU. Whilst Black Mask dies at the end of BoP, and Harley Quinn temporarily does good, we’re not supposed to think she’s a good person or a hero at the end of it. She’s still an anti hero and an asshole, and whilst we’re supposed to enjoy it, we’re not supposed to look up to her. The heroes (Helena, Dinah, Renee) also have massive flaws which aren’t painted positively but don’t detract from their heroism. In Shazam, the human antagonist is alive at the end of the movie, albeit cracked mentally. The Sins literally cannot be destroyed, so whilst they’re captured, they’ve not gone anywhere. In Aquaman, one of the villains survives and is still actively looking for revenge. The other villain has a chance at potential redemption, and is also still very much alive. Whilst it was done pretty poorly, there wasn’t a central human villain to the WW84 story- the object of destruction was destroyed, the human vessel was given a second chance, and Cheetah is, once again, very much alive.
