How long has it been? It feels like forever. It can’t be though can it? Midgardians don’t live that long…
But this one does. He speaks of wars that were fought long before he was born. Something about him... he has done this to someone like me before and reaped the rewards. This is why he does this.
Thor peers at Whitehall through bloody eyes. The pain has gone for now but it’s not respite. His body feels alien to him. Whitehall frowns at the monitor. Thor makes a sound that’s like a chuckle, albeit a sputtering, wet one from shredded lungs. Whitehall’s eyes snap up at him, a tranquil fury settling over his features.
Th experiments are not yielding the expected results. It is no consolation after being cut up, drained, burnt and violated but it’s something.
“Stop the pain relief,” Whitehall snarls at an assistant. “We’ll leave him a for few hours and see how he likes it then.”
Then Thor is alone. At least when they are hurting him he doesn’t have the capacity to think of home or to run through all the mistakes that led to him being here.
He knows now that the Frost Giant attack was calculated. The lack of death and destruction and Laufey’s taunt about traitors point to someone trying to make a point. A point that Thor knows now needed to be made. When Thor first worked out what Loki had done rage had consumed him, he’d fought his captors and the reprisals had been painful and humiliating. Hanging there for days afterwards, flesh torn from bones, Thor had gone over every conversation he and his brother had shared, every adventure, every fight.
What sort of King would he have made? Now he’s broken but before he was brutal.
There was no way that Loki could have foreseen that one act of defiance leading to this. All Thor wants is a chance to see his brother one last time. He doesn’t know what he’d say but he just wants Loki here, even if he were angry or gloating. It would be better than nothing.
What was that rhyme mother taught us? Old Asgardian. A song about reaching out to loved ones…
He barely registers the green light, the sound of boots on the stone floor.
“Norns. What madness is this?” It sounds like Sif but Sif is gone. “How? After all this time?”
“Magic, our mother’s magic.”
Loki…
“I thought-“
“Not your strong suit Sif, as you have demonstrated every day since the mess on Jotunheim. Direct our fighters to round up everyone in this pit of serpents. Cut down anyone who resists.”
No, this is a dream.
“What are you going to do?”
“Help my brother. Our father took his healing but I can at least take him to Asgard. He may have a chance.”
“Your majesty-“
“Go! You have tried my patience enough.”
Magic crackles in the air and then Thor is on the floor. Or he’s in someone’s arms on the floor. The sensation is strange after hanging there for so long.
“Brother? Brother open your eyes.”
Loki’s face swims before Thor.
“Not here. Asgard.”
“I’ve been looking for you. These mortals have magic, dark magic that blocked you from Heimdal’s sight.” Loki’s voice is tight. “Thor please look at me. I need you to be strong. Please. I’m so-“
“No.”
“Thor.” Loki has never been afraid to weep and Thor has never envied him more.
“No…apologies. Just home. I want to go home. Can we go home?”
“I can take you to Asgard but I cannot reverse father’s spell. I’m not…I’m not strong enough, not clever enough. Oh Norns…”
“Why? You did nothing. This is all my fault. These beast would have killed you.”
“Didn’t though…you saved me. You’re…a good brother.”
“If you knew-“
“I do. It’s alright.” Thor struggles to open his eyes and gives a lopsided smile. It doesn’t seem to have the effect he wants based on Loki’s anguished expression. The world is spinning.
“Sif!” She appears behind Loki. “Heimdall open the bridge! Sif take him to the healers.”
“Don’t leave me,” Thor pleads.
“I shall be right behind you,” his brother promises. “There is one thing I must do first.”
“You look more like a God,” the mortal says. Loki supposes he should be impressed that the worm doesn’t tremble. “So, you are the God of Mischief.”
“Some call me that. Some call me the God of Chaos, God of Outcasts. I am particularly fond of the moniker the God of Stories. You call yourself Whitehall I understand?”
The man nods.
“Your realm interests me. It always has. The petty infighting, pointless divisions and the way you squander your meagre lifetimes. Though you have squandered more than most. Your story is far more wretched than anyone else.”
“I have achieved immortality,” Whitehall counters.
“No. You have meddled with things you cannot hope to fully understand. You’re a child playing with matches.”
“And you are the parent ready to discipline?”
“Oh no,” Loki chuckles. “The ones that call themselves SHIELD? I have helped them take this base. Asgard has no wish for war with lesser beings anymore and I have graced them with an alliance on the condition that I could deal with you and your crimes against my family in a more…personal fashion.”
“You have no authority-“
“I am the Allfather. I am the authority and when I am done with you, you will regret ever drawing breath.”
Charles, you are literally the only person surprised by this. You are a telepath, you disaster man, and Raven is your sister. Why are you this outraged? XD
