          she’s the kind of girl you never see coming. it starts off simple and two months later you’re saying  i           love you, you are my world. she told me  ❛ i want a kiss ❜  and i knew i was in trouble. i want to spend           every night tucked up in the mystery that is her mind. what is she thinking ?  what does she want ?            is this enough for her ?  am i enough for her ?  some people you can read; she’s a novel written in           another language.  love  is never easily understood. our love was unexpected, the kind you only read           about. one second i was flying on a plane, the next we were falling in love. it gives me hope that the           world is a good place. she gives me hope that i am good. i look into her eyes and i’m in her soul,           completely transfixed. she wraps her arms around me and i swear no one has ever felt safer in this           world .fingers intertwined with mine and i’m sure we can take on the world. lying next to her i feel her           magic, the kind you can only find in a girl who finds humor in everything. she kisses me and i sprout           wings that take me to a place where we’re together forever. sometimes she laughs and i swear it’s the           cure for any disease. it healed me. she feels like home. no, better than that,; she feels like where i           belong, where i was always supposed to be. i wasn’t looking for anyone; she showed me my forever.           she’s the kind of girl that can do that,  steal your heart and change your life.

Norah juggled a pile of multi-colored papers in one hand and dug around her purse with her other. She could have sworn her keys were in there somewhere and when she found them she felt victorious. It was quickly taken away, however, when she noticed her apartment key wasn’t hanging with the rest of her keys. Narrowing her eyes, she looked up and walked over to the door anxiously. When it was indeed locked, she tossed her head back and sighed. “Please no,” she begged, trying the door again.

When it wouldn’t budge, she silently cursed her roommate and then turned around and slid down the wall beside the door. All she could do was wait. Crossing her ankles out in front of her, Norah picked up the stack of art done by a herd of five year olds. She began sifting through them and only when she heard footsteps did she peek out from over the artwork and lock eyes were the male who lived across from.

    “I’m sorry to hear that, Mr Rogers. From what I understand, PTSD can be a really difficult thing to deal with.”  Matt trailed off, briefly listening to the man’s heart rate as they spoke on the subject together. All the time he was judging the situation, judging the man’s reactions so that he knew when it would be a good point to change the subject in order to save the man’s stress levels.   “Now, I understand you came to us for advice on a debt dispute, right?”

       it was GREAT idea ! to host a gallery event showcasing all the veterans paintings from her class --- it was her proudest moment to walk around & look at all the diverse oils & acrylics . it made her heart soar ! & of course all proceeds would go towards helping veterans & those with PTSD .    ( WOO HOO ! )    ‘ steve ! ’    she hustled over to the youngest  member of her class , arms wrapping the big ox of a man in an excited hug .    ‘ isn’t this great ? i was worried not many people would show up , but --- i mean look at this turn out . your pieces are probably the most popular , but you have a natural talent --- sorry i’m rambling . ’    IT WAS ALL SO EXCITING !

He won’t throw her out, but he will break her heart. She’d laugh at the irony of it, if it didn’t still cut so deeply. If she still didn’t know how it felt for him to look down at her and tell her no. The simple fact is, she just wants to go home. Back to Bonnie’s couch where she can curl up and cry. Because as much as she promised herself this was a fresh start, as much as she PROMISES herself she’ll no longer be that girl ---- she is. Once again, she’s the girl who falls too fast for the wrong guy. The guy who doesn’t want her. Or who in this case, does, but still, somehow, she loses. The tears are clumped in her throat. Making it hard to talk. To breathe. To STAND THERE and pretend that pieces of her aren’t chipping away, falling into the sudden distance between them.

❝ It’s okay, ❞   She murmurs, but even as she does, her eyes drift to look out the window. Watching as snow falls down so heavily that she can’t even see across the alley outside of his house. Her heart sinks slightly. Knowing that this isn’t the kind of thing she can go out in. SHE’S STUCK. They’re stuck. Slowly being strangled in the tension between them. Caroline swallows, busying herself by glancing around his apartment, looking for something, anything that will distract her. But there’s nothing. It’s a blank canvas. Like he just moved in. No pictures. No book shelves. She’ll bet anything that if she goes to his room, his bed will be neatly made with nothing more than a clock on the bed side table.   ❝ Look I can go, ❞   She finally murmurs, voice still thick, close to tears.   ❝ It’s fine, I’m sure...I’m sure there’s a cab somewhere, right? ❞   This is New York, after all.

THE FIRST COUPLE OF TIMES, she tries to convince herself that it’s not what she thinks she is. That it’s over between them. That this can’t happen AGAIN. They tried it. She failed. He has someone else. But it’s IMPOSSIBLE to look at him and not be in love with him. It’s like those few years they spent together tied her so completely to him that she’ll never be able to be fully rid of him. No matter how long they’re apart, no matter how bad things ended. She’ll always be in love with him. Caroline swallows, shaking her head as she looks away from him. 

He thinks she hated him. He thinks...god the thought breaks her heart. NO MATTER WHAT, loving him was never the issue. If anything, she’s sure she loved him too much. So much so that leaving nearly broke her, even if it was supposed to be for her own good. Leaving him had broken her. LEAVING HIM had been the hardest decision of her life.  ❝ I couldn’t ever hate you, ❞   Caroline murmurs, looking back up at him with a sad smile.  ❝ Look I...I shouldn’t have left. It was selfish and I was weak and...you deserved so much better. But I just...I got SCARED, you know? ❞  That maybe that was all there was. The nightmares. The anxiety. The rare bursts of anger. Maybe that was all they were meant to be, a ticking time bomb. Her walking on eggshells, quiet moments few and far in between the battlefield that was his mind. It was supposed to have gotten BETTER, after the war. And yet it had only seemed to get worse. She’d caved.  ❝ You deserved better. ❞

          Her entire world STOPS in that one moment. She says the words teasingly, as he’s walking out the door, knowing she won’t get a response from him. But when she looks up, still grinning, the sight of his smile LITERALLY makes her heart skip a beat. If she didn’t know she was in love with him, the sight of his smile would have done it right then and there. HAPPINESS looks good on him. He seems lighter, and maybe it’s wishful thinking but the past few weeks...he’s seemed better. Lighter, somehow. She swears the moment can’t get better and then...then those words leave him and she actually sucks in a breath. 

          It’s nothing short of a miracle that she doesn’t die right then and there. Caroline sits frozen, mouth slightly agape, eyes staring at him as he’s halfway out the door. He loves her. She’s still somewhat processing the words, wondering if she imagined them, if he even meant to SAY them, but one look at him proves he did. And then, like his happiness broke through the floodgates, she lets out a laugh, uncurling her legs from beneath her on the couch and practically skipping towards him before he can shut the door. ❝ Say it again, ❞ She murmurs, breathless as she looks up at him. There was a time, maybe as short as FIVE MINUTES ago, that she never thought she’d hear those words. And now that she has... ❝ You love me? ❞ Her smile is nearly painful, happiness flooding through her entire being, buzzing and warm and whole.

The drugs flood out of her system relatively easily. She’s always been healthy, they didn’t have her long enough to do permanent damage to her system --- physically, at least. And a few hours after they get her into the hospital, they allow her visitors. Well, one visitor. Her mom is flying in from Virginia as they speak, Elena and Bonnie are getting in a car to start the drive. But there’s really only one person she wants to see right now. 

Caroline swallows as the nurse murmurs something to him, opening the door slowly and giving Caroline enough time to push herself into as much of a sitting position as she’s able. He looks normal now. Not like he did before, when the room was erupting in chaos and there was shouting form every angle, someone jabbing a needing in her neck and yanking on her arm to drag her away. But before they could, he was there. And before she could hit the ground, she was in his arms. Her tongue drags over her chapped lip as she looks at him, wondering what it is that she’s supposed to say. ❝ I wanted to say thank you. For... ❞ A swallow. For what? Saving her from becoming one of those girls? The ones that get a new primetime special every few years? The ones that become synonymous with ‘don’t let your daughters out of your sight’? ❝ I know it was your job. But you saved my life. ❞
