âam i making you uncomfortable?â
SOFT ANGST STARTERS.
@painmade
She frowned at his words and turned her head to look his way. The last thing she felt was uncomfortable, so she found the question odd. Norah had been enjoying his company and what they had been doing. Then again, she couldnât think of anything she wouldnât want to do with him. âYeah, no,â she chuckled, softly. âWhy? Should I be uncomfortable with this? Because Iâm not. You donât have to worry.â
SOFT ANGST STARTERS.
âstay for me.â
âwhatâs this between us?â
âi donât want your apology.â
âyou know i have feelings for you.â

âi donât know who i am.â
âyour fear of looking stupid is holding you back.â
âare you still alive?â
âi donât like being told what to do.â

The kid would be the death of him. A year ago, Jackson wouldâve claimed that a teething toddler and a girl on the brink of her teenage years were what kept him up at night, but Sophia had proved to be quite the handful all by herself, without the assistance of her siblings. Always the middle child. He shouldâve known.
The manâs expression said it all, the lines in his face carving deeper into his flesh with every passing day, dark eyes surrounded by the shadows of grief, stress, and a painful twinge heâd had in his neck for the past two weeks. Mustâve slept funny, but he hadnât bothered to do anything about it.
â Miss Thomas? â He reached out for her hand, managed a small smile in greeting as he shook it, but the concern couldnât be hidden from his expression nor his tone of voice. â Whatâs going on with Sophia? She in trouble? â
Norah frowned and shook her head, chuckling softly. She could tell this man was exhausted by his newfound dependents and she felt sorry for him. It couldnât have been an easy adjustment for any of the parties involved. Suddenly having a new parental figure took the cake compared to her moving every three years.
âNo, no, Mr, Ford,â she said, reaching out to pat his hand reassuringly. âSheâs not in trouble at all. Itâs quite the opposite, actually. I would usually expect a student who has gone through something so traumatic would be struggling. Perhaps even slightly behind.â
Clearing her throat, Norah slid a sheet with all of Sophiaâs test scores. âBut Sophia is proving to be ahead. Sheâs doing wonderful and they want to have her tested to be in the accelerated class next year. But we wanted to make sure you think she could handle that.â
you can survive this. you are strong. itâs okay. you are going to be okay, i promise.
ooc: woo drafts are done. iâll stop spamming the dash now. sorry.

She hated having to call parents for the first time. It was always a struggle to get out who she was and why she was calling. Looking at the file on her desk, she admired the little girls photo as the line rang on her end. The story that came with the picture was quite possibly the saddest thing sheâd ever had to read. She couldnât imagine what the little girl was going through. When the line finally got picked up, she closed the file and began twirling a piece of her hair.
âHello! Hi. This is Mr. Ford, yes?â she asked, rubbing her forehead now. When she received confirmation that it was indeed him, she continued on, âMy name is Norah Thomas. Iâm your daughter Sophiaâs teacher. I was wondering if there was a time you could come in to sit down and talk?â

Heavy eyes blink a few times before adjusting to the room around her. Norah had no idea where she was. The last thing she remembered was going to bed in her own apartment. Now, she definitely wasnât home. Panic began to bubble in her chest as every horror movie sheâd ever seen began to flash through her mind. Sheâs pulled from those thoughts when a door opens and man far more beautiful than sheâs ever seen walks in and toward her.
âW-Who are you?â she asked, surprised she could even find her voice. Usually when she was terrified her body shut down and she couldnât so much as blink let alone speak. âWhere am I?â

She wouldnât have called if she had any other choices, but sheâd gotten about a block away from the school when her car began to smoke and just died. Towing was too expensive, but then she remembered she knew a mechanic. Sort of. So she called Dean and waited pathetically in her car until she saw him pulling up. Climbing out of her car, she pulled her jacket around her tighter as she neared him.
âThank you so much,â she said, voice cracking. There were tears welled up along her lower lashes, but she was trying to keep herself together. âI-I donât know what happened. It was fine this morning and I promise Iâll pay you back as soon as I can itâs just... Money is a little tight right now.â

Going out to clubs and bars werenât her scene. Norah was a kindergarten teacher. Not someone who went out and did things like Jessica did. So how she managed to talk her into coming out was something Norah hadnât had the energy to try and figure out. Looking around the club, one of the first things she noticed was that she clearly wasnât wearing the right type of outfit. The second thing she noticed was how people just left their drinks everywhere. That was a dangerous game to play and she wasnât about it.
âWhy are we here again?â she asked, eyeing her bright green drink. It was so green it didnât look like something that should enter the body. âI didnât realize that wearing clothes was against the rules.â

Joining a gym hadnât been in any of Norahâs plans, but here she was. Sheâd originally just signed up for a few yoga classes. Her mother had insisted that since joining her own yoga group she felt younger and had more energy. Norah, on the other hand, didnât think twisting herself into uncomfortable position would warrant anything but relaxing. Making her way down a hall, her eyes glanced toward a window and she had to do a double take. It looked like a kick-boxing class and it looked worthwhile.
As it ended, she waited for people to walk out before tapping a friendlier face on the shoulder. âIâm sorry to bother you, but was that kick-boxing? It looked pretty intense. Far more fun than yoga, I bet.â

Walking straight into their home, Norah walked passed Jackson and Harriet wearing nothing but her robe. Her hair still had rollers in it and in her arms were three different outfit choices. After a small freak out she decided she needed her best friend so to Aprilâs house she went. Bursting into the master bedroom, Norah laid the outfits on the bed and then looked at her friend over her large belly.
âI need help,â she said, frowning. She began pacing back and forth and chewing on her thumb nail. âI have a date and I donât even know the guy, but I agreed to it and now I donât know what to do next.â

She grinned at him brightly before bringing up what she wanted. He had made the trip over, so hopefully he wouldnât mind offering his knowledge on all things plants. Norah, however, had single-handedly killed every plant she had ever owned. Even the fake plants she tried out didnât work out well. So before taking the project to her classroom, she wanted any tips and tricks she could get that would assist in keeping the plants alive.
âSo, as you can see,â she said, gesturing toward her dinning room table. âI have about fifty different types of plant seeds. What I need from you is help picking out the easiest one to make grow and then help planting it. If you donât mind.â

Norah had plenty of experiencing baby sitting. Her mother had run an in-home daycare when she was growing up so they always had a bunch of the other military familyâs little ones around. This was a little different, though. This time she was babysitting one of her students. It had been a last minute emergency sort of thing so of course she had told her father, Dean, absolutely without any hesitation. She adored the little girl so hopefully things would go smoothly.
âSo what do you usually do after school?â she asked, after they had said goodbye to her dad and settled back on the sofa. âDo you watch shows or play games?â
tobeblamedâ:Â
he tilted his head in wonder before being reminded of how considerably young he was and how easily he could be mistaken for a college student. dean exhaled an amused breath before clarifying.    â work. iâm a mechanic âŠÂ  â  sometimes. when i donât work in retail.  â   he didnât always have to work two jobs, but sometimes he had but no other option. in turn, he inquired curiously,    â do you like being a teacher? being surrounded by kids all day and all?  â
A single dad who worked two jobs. It seemed like he was doing everything he could for his daughter and it was admirable. âTwo jobs. Wow. You have your hands full,â she picked up her beer again to give her hands something to do. âTo answer your question, I love it. I think itâs what I was made to do, ya know?â She took a drink and then looked at him again. âIf you ever need help with Emma... A sitter or anything you can give me a call. Youâre doing so good with her that Iâd hate to see you have to call out or anything when Iâm not too far from here.â
