Surviving the apocalypse was not an easy thing to do, Ichigo could say that for sure. And yet, determined to return a bit of happiness to his mother and sisters, between all the loss, he found himself there, in the middle of a store in shambles and face to face with one of the monsters that had already taken so much from all of them. Ichigo expected to fight, to lose his life by the end of that unfortunate encounter. He didn't expect to make it out alive (sporting bruises and bitemarks and the lingering taint of satisfaction), nor did he expect the blooming of something lurking in the depths of his own mind. There were supposed to be no memories and no attachments, they were supposed to go back to their everyday lives, with everything that entailed and just the promise to kill one another if they ever met again.
