“Well, go easy on me, alright?”
Akashi Kuniyuki is not the most proactive person we know. He even said it himself that despite being forged by the founder of the Rai School (Rai Kuniyuki), he isn’t motivated to do anything about it. Why? Maybe we just needed a guy like him in the roster to make things interesting. His MVP line, my favorite line, is like when you accidentally become important at work.
Lazy, easygoing, and always looking for something to eat or a place to rest, Akashi still has a heart.
He is considered the guardian to fellow Rai school swords, Aizen Kunitoshi and Hotarumaru. Both of the former swords were forged by Rai Kunitoshi, the son of Kuniyuki. They consider Akashi as their older brother in turn. This is where I stem my theory of Call me Call me being about Aizen and Hotarumaru sung in Akashi’s perspective. He mentions them in his voicelines a few times and they’re just him fussing about them despite his unassuming demeanor. And if I’m being honest, he would bend and break to protect them.
“I thought there was nothing / to tie me down to / but these two little ones / are who I think of wherever I am.” This line makes me smile mostly because he thought he got off scott free but SIKE he has two children to take care of now. They’re like leeches to his life that he cannot shake off, nor does he want to. He notices this change and admits it; “I understand / it’s not like me.” But he then realizes that these two are his everything and would do anything to protect them; “but I couldn’t leave them alone / I was prepared to lose my life,” and “No matter what rains down upon me / I swear to protect you with my life / no matter what the outcome may be.”
The title Call me Call me can be Akashi’s offer to help Aizen and Hotarumaru in whatever situation they’re in, and he’ll respond no matter what; “Even so, I can’t just leave them / I’m prepared to risk everything.”
I just really like the fact that this song displays Akashi’s love and care for both Aizen and Hotarumaru. The game already does a little bit of lifting to also exemplify that. In Hanamaru (2016) there’s a whole episode about it. He’s also just a really funny guy.
Man I feel as if this is my shortest analysis, but what can I say? He loves his kids. “There are some things that can’t be helped.”
