(& Legos, & toy cars, & [fill in the blank]….) #GirlPower #NoGenderDecember When I was little, I remember excitedly running up to a Mattel booth at a convention that was split down the middle between Barbie and Hot Wheels, each side equally decked out in pink versus blue. The man behind the counter immediately handed me a Barbie. After noticing how disappointed I looked, he asked what was wrong. In a very small voice, I asked to have a toy car instead. His eyes got all wide, and he made the biggest deal out of it, turning to his business partner and saying, “Wow! Look at this little girl. She likes TOY CARS!!!” He was being really sweet, but I was still confused and kinda crushed as to why it was a big deal. I was a girl who likes toy cars. So what?
Needless to say, (MANY) years later, when my 2 year-old son asked for a Barbie book at his school’s book fair, I very proudly said yes and paid for it. (I AM still hoping he makes good use out of the dozens of my old Lego sets I saved for him. They are worth thousands. No pressure, kid, lol.)
