Anybody with functioning activity above the brain stem knows that just because something is weird, that doesn’t mean it’s unacceptable. Outliers in music, art and literature are often celebrated for this very reason; they bring something new to the table and manage to challenge the status quo/conventional thinking. It is for this reason that I choose to occasionally post tunes that are ABSOLUTELY BATSHIT. There may be those of you out there that can’t stand tunes by Deerhoof, but I’ll tell you right now, you’re never going to find music anywhere that is this distinct and experimental in structure, sound or spirit. Beginning in the mid-1990’s largely as an improvisational act, this group has managed to crank out a mind-blowing 25+ albums (including EP’s and live albums) in just less than three decades of effort. Continuous format experimentation and some personnel changes over the years led to an overall sound that can best be described as ‘noise-punk’, although improv and psychedelia also work their way into the formulation to bring about a vibe that is refreshingly expressionist and avant-garde. It’s art-pop with lyrics and instruments which vacillate so manically in composition you’ll think the entire band is on bath salts and high-powered mushrooms one minute, only to be delivered a perfectly cogent and fully-realized thought the very next minute by the very same performers. This is Believe E.S.P. from 2007’s Friend Opportunity. Please smash play, listen to the nice bat guano, and enjoy some audio that manages to defy true classification.
as the frontperson of noise-punk band #IMPORTANTPART i hereby bring you scorpionic-heartbreak yōkai-drag beauty-monster disaster realness
