Windows Phone 7.8 Starts Rolling Out to Nokia 800
#SuryaRay #Surya Nokia has started rolling out its Windows Phone 7.8 software to some Nokia 800s, _WP7.nl _reports. Microsoft's not-quite-WP8 update for devices which launched with Windows Phone 7 will also be coming to Nokia Lumia 510 and 900, but Lumia 800 seems to be first to take the plunge. After the update, Lumia 800 owners can expect a number of upgrades, including resizable Live Tiles, more theme and accent colors, and a Bing-adorned lock screen. As far as other WP7 handsets go, Microsoft said those will be getting the WP7.8 update in early 2013. The Proud Wifi signal of Nokia
Free wifi? In London? Sponsored by Nokia? You'd think they have something to sell that they're proud of this year...
Lumia 800 - The Nokia Windows Phone is here
It’s a WP7 phone. It looks like the Nokia N9 (which is a good thing) and it has some custom made Nokia apps, out of which the navigation app is the most notable. Will it “beat” the iPhone? It needs to compete with it anyway, maybe not beat it. And this is the first time in years that Nokia has something to compete with. Will it "beat" Android phones? A much more interesting and relevant question, but the answer is boring: Some of them. At €420 it’s priced below the more premium iPhone 4S (€629) which seems reasonable. Don’t care about the “$585” price tag for the Lumia 800 mentioned in articles, conversion rates for gadgets doesn’t work that way. In that case, a wifi, 16gb iPad that goes for €479 in Europe would cost $665 in the US, instead of $499. After having reviewed the N9 I can tell you this much: The phone feels fine and it will be a better phone with WP7 than with MeeGo in my opinion. Not that there’s something wrong with MeeGo, but it’s a dead end street. WP7 might not be out on the highway yet, but at least it has left the driveway. The Lumia 800 is however not the phone for me:
I already have a phone.
The screen on the Lumia 800 is probably the same as on the N9 and how good it may SEEM to be, the PenTile subpixel rendering ruins one handed web article reading in portrait mode. The resolution isn’t sharp enough for my eyes. And I need this (hey, what and how do YOU read in the bathroom?).
No front cam. This is another deal breaker for me. I only use it when I’m out of town or when my children are away. But for those times, it’s a must.
Besides this, the Nokia Lumia 800 looks like a great first punch. Welcome back into the fight Nokia! Nokia Lumia 800 hands on: Pocket-Lint Slashgear Engadget The Next Web Picture from Pocket-Lint
