Last book: just finished The Last Unicorn by Peter S. Beagle. absolutely beautiful book, i highly recommend reading it if you haven't, especially if you've seen and liked the 1982 animated adaptation (which is done by the same guys who did the 1977 Hobbit animated film). i originally saw the movie, which actually stays pretty true to the book, for the first time in my childhood and instantly fell in love with it. the animation is gorgeous, the soundtrack is great (my dad would beg to differ but that's okay, not everybody likes awesome things i guess) and it's one of the best fantasy stories i've ever known. Beagle is really good at world building without saying too much. he tells you just enough to make you want to know more about the small pockets of the world the unicorn travels in her quest. and there are clear limits to magic and its users - boundaries are one of the most important steps of building believable fantasy worlds. Beagle is also exceedingly skilled at portraying what different forms of heartbreak look like, because that's ultimately what the story is about. it's not just lying on your back in your room at 2am blasting Sarah McLachlan in your headphones. it's not just the screaming, red hot tears you see trail down characters' faces on TV. it's in the fabric of every interaction you make with other beings, the loss behind the eyes of the stranger you bumped into on your way home, hidden in plain sight. yeah, idk, it's just a really good book. also, my fellow trekkies will recognize René Auberjonois' voice as the skeleton in Haggard's castle if they watch the film.
Last song: i don't really remember so i'm just gonna say "If I Could Only Be Sure" by Nolan Porter. dude popped up on my recommended today and i pressed the rewind button like five times. it's one of those songs that scratches a sonic itch you didn't know you had.
Last film: ...Star Trek: First Contact. listen, i know some people have mixed feelings about the TNG movies, but i loved it. don't really understand what happened between getting phased for trying to escape his destiny and being suddenly all too happy to do warp travel with those weirdos from the future in the next scene, but Zephram Cochran was a delight. it occurred to me by the end that while everyone else was trying to make sure First Contact happened by either forcing Zephram Cochran to do space travel or fight off the Borg, Data basically just had the weirdest sexual experience of his life and then woke up and his captain was there trying to sacrifice his life for him. also, i love Lily, i would die for Lily, i hope the rest of her life was (is?) awesome, Lily deserves the world. very cheeky of them to have Picard kiss her cheek at the end the way directors will often have their female characters do the Obligatory End-of-Story Have a Nice Life Kiss. i also recently watched the new Knives Out movie, which was very good. and Die Hard for the first time, which was interesting. idk why but i find classic action movies kind of charming. Alan Rickman remains a cinematic legend, as always.
Last TV series: this is a tricky one. technically, i'm in the middle of watching three Star Trek series with two different people, which is an experience to be sure. been interesting to be going through two separate rewatches of Deep Space Nine and honestly really cool to see someone else experience it for the first time. but i've also been watching Blossoms Shanghai, which is ... extremely melodramatic, to say the least. however, it's Wong Kar-wai, so it's also very good and very fun. the first episode will have you thinking the suave business guy is the main character, but the show's strengths are really in its female characters. not super far in, so please no spoilers.
Sweet or salty: salty. not really sure why, but sweet leaves a yucky aftertaste in my mouth sometimes and savory things usually get rid of it.
Coffee or tea: really depends. i'm aware of coffee's versatility, but tea can be caffeinated or herbal and comes in many flavors so it's got a little bit of a leg up on coffee, in my opinion. and i'm not about to drink coffee with obscene amounts of syrup and milk, thank you very much. i like it black.
Working on: finishing a bachelor's degree! though i'm on break at the moment, so i'm working on sending out cover letters to various community farms and libraries for work after graduation. been crocheting a lot lately, but what i really need to do is mend some clothing that's a little worse for wear. also, nonprofessionally, working on a piece about Star Trek and agriculture i want to post here. not like a huge research paper or anything, but i'm very passionate about both of these things and am interested in what farming on 24th century Earth would look like.
