N.L.M | Notation #1
Need to start making short entries here. The Tumblr community gives so much in terms of inspiration and creativity. And I think we’ve been doing more receiving than giving. In the past seven years since I started a small creative business I’ve used Tumblr as a means to search for inspiration. It’s been my secret digital source and access to the universe’s art. It’s a portal to my version of Tron. Inside of it I walk around a world that look’s like a beautiful lo-fi music video. In real life, however, I work as a freelance photographer and also as a soccer coach. I also hustle on the side working odd jobs for friends and family. When my creative hat is on I work on the pseudonym, No Lost Motion.
So where to begin. Hmmm, remember the 5 W’s back in English class back in the day? For the next few days my aim is to try and reflect on the Who, What, When, Where, and Why of N.L.M.
Today the question is: “Who all is a part of No Lost Motion?”
We are three brothers from Oregon.
My name is Josh. And I consider myself to be one of the founders of N.L.M. I must admit that there was a lot of past inspiration provided by my family that helped me start seeing things from both a productive and creative eye. I think at the end of the day I try to embody a small family business type of feel in everything that I do.
Who helped me start the business? I would have to say my family is the biggest part of the foundation. My two brothers, Justin and Andrew, my grandfather, Nilo, my father, Ben, and last but certainly not the least my mother, Carmel, are all have helped shaped my vision. They also fuel my effort, are a constant influence and provide an ongoing source of inspiration. Like all siblings my brothers and I feed off of each other’s energy. But at the same time we’ve each developed our own unique creative identity and way of working.
For me personally, I’ve spent the better part of seven years developing my own personal photography skill sets. Like many photographers, my passion evolved and began to connect to videography and film. My interest in all things in motion started to grow when I began to experiment with exposure settings on on my original Nikon SLR. I also borrowed my father’s handi-cam and other small camcorders. Early on, manual settings on SLR’s and the development process kind of intimidated me. But after time I started to enjoy having a tool on me that helped capture pictures. To me it was about freezing time and the possibility of making physical memories. I believe still photography and video are each fundamental tools in telling stories. Bringing them together and combining them with words, as you know, becomes such a powerful way of conveying your message. Sometimes a photo itself is sufficient enough. And other times a video is just what is needed. But when you combine imagery with motion and sound you are most often left with something special. My goal is to become more proficient in doing that.
My brother, Justin, is a do’er and a shaker. He get’s things done and does it in a relentless fashion. Justin’s craft is organization and working with efficiency. As a soccer player his choice speed of play is fast and direct. He is also sharp and accurate in everything he does. My brother, Andrew, is the doodler and maker. He’s smooth and the easy going one of us brothers. He does things carefully and does things right the first time. If futbol is an art form Andrew would be the brush and the delicate hand of the painter. He keeps with the tempo and eventually adds his own personal touch to the game. Then there is me, Josh, and i’m kind of the grunt of the three. I’m not smooth and sharp like my brothers at the end of the day. I would define my work and creative style as a hammer and mallet. I tend to say to myself often, “that’ll buff out.” As a soccer player I learned to love playing on the wings and up top as a striker. I believe you have to create your own luck in this game of life. You have to work hard. I’ve also learned that one of the tricks in being a productive creative is that you have to never stop wanting to learn. And that inspiration can be found almost anywhere. You just have to have use your senses and find it.
