Opinion: Drag is on a spectrum. The debate on Trans Performers and Bio Queens being members of the Drag Community.
So there is a lot of controversy about Rupaul and his comment about trans drag queens being on the show Rupaul’s drag race and his stance on allowing trans women who medically transition and bio queens to compete on the show. Now there are past contestants of Rupaul’s drag race including Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 9 winner Sasha Velour who have been calling out Rupaul on the recent statement and are calling for Drag to be inclusive. Now some people may consider all this heat to be drama. However, I do feel it is important to spread visibility to all different kinds of drag performers and not just Drag Queens who are cis gay men. Drag is universal. Drag is expanding every minute of the day by the hour. You have Drag Queens, You have Drag Kings, You have drag performers who do a mixture of both. You have cis women performing as drag queens and hyper feminizing their makeup and costuming, you have trans women performing as drag queens, you have those who are assigned female at birth performing as men regardless if they are cis women, non binary, or trans men, you got performers who mix and match and creating more of an androgynous character. Drag is on a spectrum just like how sex, sexuality, and gender are on a spectrum. Drag also offers a variety a performances. You have drag performers who sing live, you have drag performers who use fire in their performances, you have drag performers who dance, you have drag performers who lip sync, you have drag performers who also do burlesque. Drag is Universal.
