I rewatched the Punisher (2004) over the weekend for the first time in over a decade and honestly, it's still one of the best Marvel movies. Even if it isn't an MCU Marvel movie. I loved that they used practical effects for 95% of all stunts, including several wrecked cars, a myriad of explosions of varying sizes (some with stunt men being tossed around), a modified switchblade that shot the blade, and Thomas Jane literally being thrown through a wall. Really, the only time CGI was used was to make a few explosions bigger at the end and create a fiery Punisher logo out of exploded cars.

Another interesting part that I'd mostly forgotten about until I started watching was that it included a gay character in the main cast. Will Patton's Quentin Glass was Howard Saint's right hand man and one of the primary antagonists. He was also gay and it was a surprisingly nuanced aspect of the story that wasn't ever referred to in a negative way. I won't say it was perfect representation by any means, but it was far better representation than I ever would've expected from a low-budget, early 2000's comic book movie.

Also, John Travolta needs to stick with cheesy villains because he plays them incredibly well. Howard Saint was probably one of his best roles in the past 20 years. He played the over-the-top villain well, which fit well in a film that leaned heavily into the comic book vibe. So many lines from the film seem over-delivered and bordering on cheesy, but they also felt like dialogue you would read in a typical 90s comic book where word counts were low and dialogue was designed to be snappy and evocative. Travolta and Jane played into that to perfection, even though critics didn't really seem to get it.

there are plenty of faults with the raimi trilogy, and I love the mcu movies so very much, but I really do miss those scenes where the new yorkers band together to protect spidey. they really were the heart of those films.
