when you put celebrities, youtubers, tiktokers or whoever else on a pedestal as ‘unproblematic queen/king’, then the second it comes out that, in fact, they are human and have made mistakes that don’t reflect who they are now and have become, you end up with the pedestal crumbling down instantly as people’s unrealistic expectations are shattered.
it is impossible to cancel genuinely bad, racist or homophobic people because they are consistently bad. when people try to cancel them, they make a half arsed apology or play the victim, then keep up their shit. you can’t cancel them because they are constantly lowering the bar for themselves, so nobody has their perception changed. shane dawson, a consistently bad guy, has been cancelled so many times in the past few years, but is still thriving and has plenty of supporters. he hasn’t been placed on a pedestal since 2014, so he can’t fall off it.
even look at someone like Tekashi 6ix9ine, a convicted paedophile, who still has tons of fans and whose new songs get huge popularity on tiktok. when someone is openly a bad person, you can’t cancel them because there is nothing to cancel when they’re consistently awful. when a good person makes a mistake, they are easy to cancel because it is so far from your expectation of how they should be, and so your perception of them is instantly lowered a huge amount.
