Non-Transferable (2017), dir. Brendan Bradley
❝Oh, great. The coffee place. You know, the one in Turkey.❞
I’m finally watching Non Transferable and THERE ARE SO MANY PEMBERLY DIGITAL ACTORS HERE I COULD CRY this film is going to be perfect
Non-Transferable Movie Review
Amy Tyler has planned the perfect surprise vacation for her boyfriend, Josh Merit. But the real surprise is on her when he breaks things off on their anniversary. Stuck with reservations in her ex-boyfriend's name, Amy's two best friends suggest if Amy can't change the tickets...why not change the guy? Pack your bags for a whirlwind adventure across three continents as two strangers find out if love can be transferred to someone new.
Non-Transferable is an entertaining rom-com, with a funny script and full of amazing visuals. Of course, it can sometimes be very cliche, as rom-coms generally are, but the humour throughout the rest of the film more than makes up for it. It can be cheesy, and yes, at times you will feel a tad bit of secondhand embarrassment, but that is part and parcel of the genre.
The film features Ashley Clements (Lizzie Bennet in The Lizzie Bennet Diaries) and Brendan Bradley, with cameos from other actors of the Lizzie Bennet Diaries, including Jessica Jade Andres (Caroline), Julia Cho (Charlotte) and Daniel Vincent Gordh (Darcy). If I’m being honest, part of what drew me to Non-Transferable was Ashley’s starring role, as she was absolutely fantastic in the modern day vlog style adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, and she was also great in this film. Viewers can easily relate to the complicated Amy, at once buoyed by optimism and a desire for perfection, whilst also incredibly vulnerable and dispirited because of her current situation.
But apart from the humour and some great performances by the cast, I found myself loving Non-Transferable for the aesthetic. Turkish Airlines is a sponsor, and so it should be no surprise that whilst the film begins and ends in the US, the majority is on location in Turkey-including Istanbul, Ephesus, Pammukkale and Cappadocia. Because of this, Non-Transferable sometimes feels like an advertisement for Turkish Airlines, and Turkey in general, but even so it doesn’t diminish interest in the film. The various Turkish locations are absolutely gorgeous, from the scenery to ancient ruins, and they just add a little something extra to the film.
Personally, as I watched a number of these scenes I was reminded of my own recent trip to Turkey in July 2016-especially when they kept drinking Turkish tea, which I adore! So on a personal level I related to this movie. And at the end of the day, as an advertisement of Turkey, it did a brilliant job...because it made me want to go back and do it all again!
So I just watched Non-Transferable (with @theashleyclements!!!) and it was a really fun movie! I thought I’d procrastinate sleep by watching it coz tomorrow is the last day I can study for my exam and I’m freaking out about it!
But the movie also made me miss Turkey so much, all the places and amazing food! And watching them drink Turkish tea just made me so happy that we found a shop with Turkish tea in Perth coz I was not gonna last without it!
I’m just watching this movie like damn I was just in Turkey last year and wish I was there again and could see even more of it!
But really, you guys should check it out, not just for the awesome Turkey visuals, but it’s a fun watch with lots of people from The Lizzie Bennet Diaries making cameos!
Does anyone know when Non Transferable with @theashleyclements is going to be released? It looked so good and it’s been in limbo for ages
