There’s a hoping that lives inside of me when it’s cold and I’m alone. It’s impossible to describe, but when I try I see only this- in August, we sit on the back porch smiling and spitting watermelon seeds into the woods, and the katydids sing to us, and the feeling of the warm and wet rind in my fingers and the hum of insect calls curl into my awareness. They curl into my arm, legs swinging off the banister, and I know it’s time to go inside. We slink into our rickety bed, and their bare skin is painted blue with the summer evening dark seeping in. On the same warm air that goosebumps their skin are the chirps of the bugs and wind through the grass.

They sit on top, a little sticky from the day, smelling like the lake, like ripe fruit, like the dog days. From this vantage I can sweep my hands over their calves and thighs, feeling the soft hairs there that catch golden in the daylight. The sounds they make for me are small admissions; they’re normally silent, but they know how I long to hear a little breath, a quiet sigh. In the winter, I can live off of just their foggy exhales, but we’ve left the windows open tonight so the woods can sing along with us in the last of our abundant months. Today the love is a bounty, and it sounds like this- August, and my baby is carefully breathing above me, all rinds around my fingers- sourer than the fruit itself, sticky just the same. This is the best sleep I get all year.
