It is easy, and natural, to ask 'what is she goddess of' as we like to define deities by areas of responsibility or the natural phenomena that they represent. The Egyptians probably didn't think that way. To them the deities were primarily possessors of power which they would use in various ways. The Egyptians would pray to any and every deity about everything but there was a degree of specialization which was expressed using names, appearance, and roles in myths. Major deities have several spheres of interest which overlap but together make up a unique deity.

it just occurred to me that ive talked pretty publicly about why i personally hate working with Ra, but I've never explained why I am willing to do so, whereas I'm completely unwilling to work for certain other deities, end of story. i believe in giving credit where credit is due, so for the record: I'm willing to (begrudgingly) work with Ra for the same reason I'm willing to (begrudgingly) vote Democrat: because from where I'm sitting, when "election" time rolls around, Ra is still the best available option.

the handful of times I've offered to him (or R-H), he was more concerned with me eating the food right away because I was hungry, than he was with me listening respectfully while he talked. i can pretty consistently expect Ra to show up, take the food, and immediately order me to eat it while we talk/work. it's a small thing, but many deities (particularly Kingly types) get very annoyed with me when I behave as though my full stomach is more important than their ego. Ra, in my experience, does not; and that says a lot about his character, in my opinion.

Although Hathor may be viewed as a cow goddess, a sky goddess or a tree goddess she is not the personification of natural phenomena. Like all deities she is an independent spiritual being who is closely tied to the natural world. To the Egyptians the deities were not merely visitors to this world, they belonged to the world and were of the world.

For the Egyptians the divine could be experienced through their senses. Enjoyment was seen as worship. If you were self denying and unhappy it showed that you were dissatisfied with what the deities had provided, that their presence didn't bring you happiness. There are frequent exhortations to rejoice and be merry and to join the cosmic song of praise.

In addition the Egyptians were very practical when it came to deities. They selected the one most likely to help them with a particular problem at a specific time. As the deities were seen as active players in life appealing to them was a practical way of resolving problems.

Hathor aroused feelings of great reverence and gratitude amongst her worshipers. She was benevolent and merciful and wanted people to be happy and to enjoy themselves. Hathor listened to their prayers and answered them, desiring always to bring her uplifting solar energies back into their lives.

I'm just starting with Kemetism, and I've been reading a lot of stuff including how sometimes people have less than favourable experiences with some gods - and this made me quite afraid. I have deep anxiety and depression, and my two pets are the two things that litterally keep me alive - I just wanted to know if my practice of kemetism and relationships or lack thereof with deities could endanger them in any way. I'm sorry if that sounds like a stupid question - and thank you for your time.

I don’t know of many NTRW that have gone after pets for anything. There can definitely be negative interactions with gods, but they rarely result in anything physical, and are more like “this god is an asshole and we flipped eachother off.”

There are, ofc, exceptions that I’ve heard of over the years, but they are few and far btwn. I’ve never had any of my animals screwed with by any of the entities I’ve encountered, and I’ve seen my fair share of jackwagons.

So I guess what I’m saying is that while there is a tiny tiny tiny chance it could happen, the odds are so low and rare, I’d tell you to not let it stop you from giving it a shot. If you’re super nervous, you could always look into learning how to ward up your space or your animals, which would make it even harder for an entity to mess with them. YMMV, ofc, but that’s my take on it.

also my last response reminds me of something i had a couple of weeks ago.

i talked a long time ago about how i used to use “free stuff” as a sort of “sign” that an entity was pleased with what i was doing. by free stuff i mean, you got your drink for free, someone gave you an extra cookie, etc.

a few weeks ago, i was in a restaurant, waiting before a film shoot, and i got a free slice of baklava. i joked to myself that Someone Somewhere was like ‘yes, poor soul, have baklava as a sign of my love.’

and then ten minutes later, i got ANOTHER slice of baklava. for free. and all i could think was someone yelling

ACCEPT MY BAKLAVA LOVE
