Progress with learning Japanese
I've been using WaniKani to learn kanji, and as I progress it's fun to start recognizing kanji in random things I see online.
But the BEST part is when you see a recognized kanji character in the wild but don't know the word it forms, and when you look it up it's a Japanese word that you've known FOREVER.
The example that just happened to me right now is with the kanji 分. WaniKani starts you by focusing on just one pronunciation and one meaning, and so I've been learning 分 as 「ぶん」 and meaning "part".
Then I read through a doujinshi where Edgar (of course it's a FF6 doujinshi) says 「。。。分かるかマッシュよ」.
I understood everything he said until that kanji. I only know one meaning (which didn't seem to make sense in the context) and one pronunciation (which is the onyomi form, and not the kunyomi form that this word would be).
So then I look up 分かる and I KNOW THAT WORD. 「わかる」, meaning "to understand"! I'd never seen it written out though!
Hilarious that this moment of understanding would happen literally with the word that means "to understand". 🤣
Sorry, I'm a bit giddy. It's a really cool feeling - those tangible times where you directly experience the progress you're making with something! I'll be fluently reading full doujinshi in no time at all! 🤣 🥰
