People seem to overlook this particular fact about him, but Arjun loves to travel. He loves being under the great sky and journeying across the land and blending amongst the people.
He very quickly learns to grasp various languages and his favourite in the tongue of the common masses, so similar to what they teach in the palace and at the gurukul and yet so different. He doesn't dare speak it in front of his brothers, Yudhishtir doesn't approve, even if it comes far more naturally to him.
Krishna, who shares the same wanderlust, is the only one he ever talks to in the language. Once Krishna told him it reminds him of his childhood and his friends. That's how the common language became their shared secret.
