Greek Island Paradise Boasts Sparkling Beaches and a No-Cigarette Environment

The picturesque Greek island of Astypalea has just over 1,000 residents. It’s not much more populated than the average American high school, boasting gorgeous architecture and clear blue coasts without suffocating crowds.

It isn’t just the population that makes the island seem like a breath of fresh air, though. A recent campaign to become the world’s first completely smoke-free environment makes it quite literally one of the healthiest places in the world—and the island hopes that it can use the drastic movement to inspire other regions of the world to do the same.

The island shared their campaign online, giving a simple statement about how they hope to change for the better.

“In Astypalea we focus on well-being, quality and pureness of life which we want to share with the visitors of our island,” the website reads.

And Cotton apparently got all worried and was like "I mean if you don't smoke and he does, the body might be going through withdraw every week, even if you don't feel it. D: That might be really hard on the body."

ANNOUNCEMENT

As of about ten minutes ago, I’ve now been a non-smoker for exactly three years.

I genuinely didn’t expect to last when I stopped smoking, on 30th November 2016. But, with support & help from others… I did.

(Yes, I’m still vaping, but yes, it still counts.)

But yeah… three years.

Thanks to everyone for their help and support.

There’s no way I would have made it this far without that help and support.

OK, anyways, three years, eh?

#palliative #Nurses in #Denmark benevolently broke their #hospital’s #regulations last week to grant a 75-year-old man his #dying #wish.

After doctors at Aarhus University Hospital told Carsten Flemming Hansen that he was too sick for surgery and would die within days from internal bleeding following an aortic aneurysm, he revealed the final thing he wanted to do.

And that was to smoke a cigarette and drink a glass of cold white wine outside, while watching the sun set.

This is the moment a dying man was granted his final wish by a nurse at a hospital in Denmark.

Carsten Flemming Hansen was told by staff at the Aarhus University Hospital that he was too sick to undergo surgery on his stomach and would die of internal bleeding.

After being informed of the news by his nurse, Rikke Kvist, he told her of his final wish — to watch the sunset while enjoying one last glass of wine and a cigarette.

She was only too happy to oblige — despite smoking being banned at the hospital.

“That was when I remembered that we are on the same floor that has access to a balcony,” Kvist told Avisen.dk.

With the help of Mr Hansen’s family he was taken out to the balcony to enjoy the sunset on Tuesday evening.

“It was a very cozy and relaxed atmosphere,” the nurse said.

“Of course they were relatives also affected by the fact that he was going to die, and they were sad. But it was cozy and there was humour.”

The hospital has since shared the picture of Hansen watching the sunset, cigarette and a glass of wine in hand.

On Facebook, the image has been liked by more than 60,000 people and shared more than 4,000 times.

On the social media site, the hospital posted the picture under the heading “A dignified death to the hospital”.

“Carsten Hansen went out onto the balcony where, with his family, he enjoyed a cigarette, a cool glass of wine and a beautiful sunset.”

Hansen passed away on Friday.
